H. M. WEINBERG CONTAINER FOR TOOTHBRLIISHES Filed April 12. 1926 INVENTQR 64. 3040 meme/seq ATTORN EYS Patented Dec. 6,. 1927.
UNITED STATES HAROLD IALLCEI WEINB EBG, OI BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CONTAINER FOR TOOTHBRUSHES.
Application filed April 1a, 1926. Serial no. 101,449.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles, and has articular reference to a container for tooth rushes.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved container in which a brush or portion thereof may be placed and kept 1n a sanitary condition when not in use and from which the brush or said portion may be readily extracted preparatory to using the brush.
Another object is the provision of a contamer-adapted for the reception of the brush portion of a tooth brush and from which the handle of said brush projects, a closure for the container being provided which, when moved to open position, will permit of the container being adjusted along said handle in order to expose said brush portion.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detail description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which lllustrates preferred embodiments ofthe inventlve idea.
In the drawin Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of container for receiving the brush portion of a tooth brush, the container being shown in closed and open positions in full and dotted lines, respectively;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through. the container illustrated 1n Figure 1 Figure 8 is a similar view of a different form of container for the brush portion of the tooth brush;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of still another form of container;
Figure 5 is a plan view of a blank from which the closure of the container shown in Figure 4.- is made; and
Figure 6 is a sectional view similar to Figure 2 showing another form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, the container herein shown is of a size sufficiently large to enclose the brush portion of a tooth brush 6 and is made of any suitable material, such as celluloid or the like through which the brush is visible when contained therein. The body portion 7 of the container is preferably of rectangular formation and has an open end and an opening 8 formed in the opposite end thereof and adjacent the side wall 9 of the body portion. With the body portion constructed in this manner the outer end of the handle of the brush may first be inserted into the open end of the container and then through the openin 8 therein until the brush portion of sai brush is entirely contamed within the body portion and engaged with the closed end thereof. The body portion may be provided adjacent the closed end with a plurality of ventilating openlugs 10, but it is to be understood that these openings may be dispensed with, if deslred.
A closure 11, made of the same material as the body portion, is provided for the open end of the latter and consists of side flanges 12 which extend alon the body port on and engage opposed wall s thereof. The side flanges 12 are of substantially triangular formation and are pivoted, by means of eyelets 13 or the like, to said opposed walls of the body ortion and adjacent the side wall 9. In t is manner the closure is piveted to the body portion and capable of bemg swung to an open position, as shown in dotteddlnes 1n Figure 1. In this connection, the'axls of rotation of the closure is so disposed with respect to the end of the wall 9 at the open end of the body portion that, when the closure is swung about its pivot in either direction, the inner surface of the top of said closure will momentarily come into frictional contact with said end of the wall 9. This frictional contact is designed for the purpose of preventing accidental or unintentional movement of the closure toward its open position, thereby insuring that the closure will remain in closed position until pressure is exerted thereon to overcome said frictional contact. This frictional contact occurs when opening the closure at the beginning of the swinging movement thereof and hence it will be seen that the open end of the body portion will be maintained closed until such time as it is desired to use the brush. The longitudinal edges of' the side flanges 12 of the closure ad acent the wall 9 of the body portion are connected by a transverse strip 14 which will engage said wall and act as a closure for the small space between the end of said wall and the adjacent portion of the closure 11.
When it is desired to use the brush the closure 11 may be swun to the open position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 whereu on the container may be move along t e handle of the brush to said dotted arranged adjacent the wall 9 of the body portion are disposed contiguous to the oposite wall. Therefore, the closure 15, when eing opened, will swing in an opposite direction to the closure 11, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 3.
As described in connection with the closure 11, the pivots 16 are so disposed with respect to the adjacent side wall that the end of the closure will have a momentary frictional engagement with the adjacent end of said side wall so as to frictionally maintain the closure in its closed position. From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the container shown in Figures 1 and 3, each provides an efiective closure for the brush portion of a tooth brush so that the same may be kept in a sanitary condition when not in use. When the brush portion is thus enclosed the handle 6 maybe suspended in the usual manner in a brush rack, or hung from a hook by means of the opening 6 formed in the free end of the handle.
In Figure 4. there is illustrated a container made of the same material as the previously described containers and consisting of a body portion 17. The body portion 17 is provided with a closed end adjacent which a plurality of ventilating openings 18 may be formed, but these openings may be dispensed with, if desired. One of the side Walls of the body portion may also be provided with an opening 19 adjacent the .open
end of the body portion which will permit of the container being suspended from a book, if desired.
A closure 20 is cut from a single sheet b of the same material as the body portion. The blank for this closure is shown in Figure 5. wherein it will be seen that said blank be is cut longitudinally at each end and on opposite sides of the central portion 21 to form pairs of flanges 22 which are initially bent at right angles to said central portion along the dotted lines 23. The central portion 21 is then bent along a line coincident with the inner adjacent edges of the flanges 22 of each pair so as to cause the free ends of said flanges to be overlapped and disposed diagonally with res ct to each other. The flanges are provide with openings 24 adjacent their outer ends, which openin are brought into registration when the are overlapped so as to receive the eye eta or other pivoting means 25, said eyelets also extending through the side walls of the body portion medially of the longitudinal edges thereof so as to pivotally mount the closure 20 centrally of the open end of the body portion. Thus the closure may be swun in either direction to open osition, as ilustrated in dotted lines in i ure 4, so that the container may be moved a ong the handle of the tooth brush as described in connection with the other forms of the invention.
-The form of the invention shown in Figure 6 comprises a rectangular body portion 26 having the open end 27 which is adapted to be partially closed by means of a closure 28 somewhat similar to the closure 15 shown in Figure 3. This closure is pivoted at 29 in the same manner as described in connection with the other embodiments of the invention so as to have a slight frictional contact with one of the walls of the body portion. Instead of having the opening for receiving the handle of the brush in the body portion, as shown in the other forms of the invention, this opening is formed in the closure 28 and is indicated by. the numeral 30. Thus in this form of the invention the brush portion of a brush is inserted into the body portion 26 while the closure is in open position, after which the closure is closed with the handle of the brush projecting through the opening 30 in the said closure.
What is claimed is:
A container for tooth brushes, including a body capable of enclosing the brush portion of the brush and having an open end and an opening formed in the opposite end contiguous to one of the side walls of said body, and through which opening the handle of the brush is capable of being inserted to position the brush portion within said ody, a closure for the open end of said body including side flanges, means for pivoting said flanges to the body, said means ing so disposed relative to the open end of the body as to cause a frictional contact between portions of the body and closure when the latter is being swung to open and closed positions, and a strip connecting adjacent ed es of said flanges conti uous to the open end of said body. h
In testimony whereof I .have aflixed my signature.
HAROLD nanaour WEINBERG.
