BRUSH KIT.
ce lmmn'a ea-a rn 15, 1927; SerialNo. 184,095. a
The present invention relates to improvements in special receptacles and has refer- V ence more particularly to a kit for. paint or varnish brushes. y Y a I 6 One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a' kit of theabove mentioned character which is adapted to re? ceive anumber of paint or varnish brushes and support the samewithin the kit in such a manner as to 'enable'a'person'to readily andeasily remove any desired brush from the kit Without interferingwith the Other brushes, thus savingconsiderable time. and
labor.
A further object'of the inventionjis to provide a kit for paint or; varnish brushes wherein the kit may be filledwitha liquid character whereinthe brush carrying unit is of such construction as toautomatically move to an open position when the unit is raised a predetermined distance in the k1t so that the brushes will be readily visible and the desired brush can be readily re-' moved from the unit.
A still further object is to provide a brush kit'oi the above mentioned characterwhioh is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed; I i Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course otthe following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, andin which llke numerals indicate like parts throughout the samez,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the kit embodying my invention, a part/of .the receptacle being broken away to moreclearly disclose the arrangementof the tray and the brush carrying unit in the receptacle,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view'taken 1 approximately on the line 2-2iof Flgure 1, showing a construction of one of the arms at the ends of the tray.
s Figure 3 is a vertical sectionalview. taken approximately on the line 3,3 ofFigure'l Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the kit or disclosing-in top plan the two brush carrying units arranged therein.
Figure is a verticaltisectional' view through one of the brush carrying units for disclosing the manner in which av brush is positioned therein, and i I Figure 6 is adeta-ilf perspective view of same in its'open'positi'on. I i
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown, the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved brush kit, the same comprising the substantially rectangular; shaped receptacle 2 Which is open at its, top. A hingedcover 3 isprovided for the open top of the receptacle and this cover s hinged at its rear side to the rear side of the upper portion of the receptacle asat- 4. Any suitable locking means such as is shown generally at 5 is associated with the front side ofzthe'cover andthe adjacent sldeof the upper portion of the receptacle whereby the cover will be locked in a closed position on the open topvof the receptacle.
A suitable handle 6 is attached to the top of the cover to provide means whereby the kit may beeasily carried Thekit is pref--- terably constructed of galvanized sheet metal, although it is to be vunderstood that, I do not wish to limit myself to the particular material from which the kit'may be constructed.
one of the brush carrying :umts, showing the I Adaptedto be removably arranged within I thereceptacle 2 is the'elon'gated tray 7, the
same being formed with a series of drain openings 8, as is clearly disclosed in Figures 1 and 3. Extending upwardly from each end of the trayfis the relatively wide arm 9, the side edges of whichare flanged outwardly as illustrated at 10.: The arms 9 are of a length substantiallyequal to the length of the end walls oflthe receptacle and are of a widthslightly less than the width of the receptacle 2. The-tray 7 is of alength slightly less than the length of the recepta- T cle andthis isjclearly disclosed in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, of the drawings. For the .pur-
pose of spacing the ends of the traywit-h respect to the end walls of the receptacle,
I provide spacing members 11 which extend outwardly from the upstanding arms 9 adjacent the upper ends thereof.
Each upstanding' arm is formed with i a pair of parallel spaced longitudinally extending slots indicated by the numeral 12, and the purpose of these slots will behereinatter more fully described. H p
A brace'rod 13 extends between the upper portions of the vertical arms 9 and this is clearly shown in the drawings.
The brush kit further includes the provision of a pair of brush carrying units designated generally by the numeral ll. Each unit comprises a casing including a pair of complementary sections 15 and 16, respectively. Each section is preferably construct ed from a sheet metalplate which is curved in such a manner whereby the sides'oil the casing gradually converge toward the bottom, as is readily obvious from the constructil tion shown in l ure 5. The lower edge of the inner plate lire section 15 is rolled as illustrated at 17 for a purpose to be pres ently apparent. The upper edges or the plate like sections are bent back upon themselves to form smooth upper edges. lGX- tending inwardly from the outer plate-like section atthe ends and the intermediate portion thereof are the vertical parallel spaced partition members 18 and the inner platelike section 15 is formed with vertical slots 19 to accommodate these partitions or separators 18in the manner clearly shown in Figure 6.
An elongated rod. 20 extends through the lower rolled edge portion 1'7 on the inner plate section 15 and through registering openings provided in the lower ends of the several partitions or separators 18 whereby ahinge connection is provided between the lower longitudinal edges of the platelike sections comprising the casing of each of the brush carrying units 14. The cndmost portions provide a closure for the ends of the casing when the sections are brought together and when said sections are disposed in a vertical position, the outer tree edges of the partitions or separators will project through the respective slots 19 provided therefor in the inner plate 15 whereby a plurality of brush receiving con'ipartments will be formed in eachcasing and the partitions and slots are so arranged as to form compartments of various sizes in order to accommodate paint or varnish brushes of difterent sizes.
,An elongated handle 21 extends upwardly from the innermost plate-like section 15 at the intermediate portion thereolfland this handle provides a means whereby each brush carrying unit 14 may be raised or lowered in the receptacle 2 in the manner to be presently described.
The rod 20 has its ends projecting beyond the ends oi the sections comprising'the casing of each brush carrying unit and the outwardly projecting'ends of the rods 20 are adapted for slidable disposition within the respective aligned slots 12 provided therefor in the upstanding arms 9 formed at the ends of thetray 7 The pins cooperate with the slots in guiding the brush carrying units during their vertical slidable movement within the receptacle and normally the outwardly projecting ends of the rods are disposed in the lowermost ends of the slots and the brush carrying units will rest on the tray 7.
The inner plate-like section 15 is formed with a series of drainopenings 22 adjacent the lower edge thereof while a similar series otdrain openings are arranged in the lower portion of the complementary plate-likesection'16 as is indicated by thenumer'al23.
The kit is of such size as to accommodate two brush carrying units and the units are arranged as shown in Figure 3 so that the handles 21 extend upwardly on. opposite sides otthe brace rod'13.
The receptacle is to bepartially filled with any suitable liquid such as benzine gasoline,
or the like, which liquidtends to keep "the bristles ot the brushes moist and soft and by reason of the openings in. the complementary sections of each of the casings of the brush carrying units the bristles will be in'nnersed in the liquid when the brush carrying units are in theirilowermost positions in the receptacle. In this manner, the brushes will be kept in individual compartments, and the liquid'cannot leak out of the receptacle and when the coveris ina closed position on the open top 01 the receptacle,'dust or other foreign matter cannot enter the receptacle. i a
In this manner, the brushes will be kept in proper condition for use Whenever necessaryand it will not be necessary to wrap the individualbrush up in a piece or paper or the like such as is now commonly done.
In order to obtain access to the brushes, the cover 3 is swung to an open position and the handl-eQl of either unit or-both units is grasped and lifted upwardly so as to cause the casing or casings to be raised up wardly and during such movement, the pins 20 will slide upwardly in the slot when both the units are lifted. As soon as the outer section 16 reaches a predetern'rined point, during the upward sliding movement of the brush carrying unit the same will swing outwardly on the pivot formed by the rod 20 so that said plate-like section will rest against the outer edge of the upper open end of the receptacle and the brushes will also be tilted whereby a person may readily view the several brushes arranged in the receptacle, the liquid will drain from the bristles and will drop into the bottom of the receptacle.
When the handle or handles are released the brush carrying units will by gravity return to their normal positions in the bottom paint and varnish brushes which will at all times maintain the bristles'of the brushes in a moist and soft condition, and furthermore by constructing a brush carrying unit in the manner as above described and as further shown in the drawings, a number of brushes can be neatly arranged in such a manner as to enable a person to readily remove any particular brush without having to examine the entire number of brushes.
The simplicity of my device enables the same to be constructed at'a Very lowcost and furthermore will at all times be positive and eflicient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed.
lVhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a kit for brushes, an open top receptacle, a cover therefor, a brush carrying unit vertically slidable in the receptacle, a handle associated with the unit for lifting the same upwardly to permit the ready ref moval of a brush when the cover forthe receptacle-is opened, said unit comprising a casing including complementary hingedly connected together at theirlower edges, said sections being automatically. separated when the unit is raised upwardly a predetermined distance in the receptacle.
2. In a kit for brushes, an open top receptacle, a cover therefor, a brush carrying unit vertically slidable in the receptacle, a handle associated with the unit for lifting the same I upwardly to permit the readyremoval of a sections brush when thecover for the receptacle is opened, said unit comprising a casing including complementary sections hingedly connected together at their lower edges, said sections being automatically separated when the unit is raised upwardly a predetermined distance in the receptacle, and partitionsar ranged on the inner face of one of the sections for dividing the easing into a plurality of brush receiving compartments.
3. In a kit for brushes, an open top receptacle, a cover therefor, a brush carrying unit vertically slidable in the receptacle, a handle associated with the unit for lifting the same upwardly to permitthe ready removal of a brush when the cover for the receptacle is opened, said unit comprising a casing including complementary sections hingedly connected together at their lower edges, said sections,v being automatically separated When the unitis raised upwardly a predetermined distance in the receptacle, and partitions arrangedon the inner face of one of the sections for, dividing the casing into a plural ity of brush receiving compartments, the
other section being formed with slots to ac-' commodate the free edges of the partitions.
4. In a kit for brushes, an open top receptacle, a cover therefor, a removable'tray arranged within the bottom of the receptacle,
"arms extending upwardly. from the ends of the tray, a brush carrying unit, cooperat ng means between the unit and said arms whereby said unit may be moved vertically between the arms, and a handle associated with the unit for actuating the same.
