The present invention contemplates a neat appearing, compact and convenient carrying case having a pair of covers hinged to the sides of the box portion thereof and adapted to overlap each other along the center. The case about to be described in detail is arranged to contain a number of trays which are moved into an outwardly extendin position over the side walls of the case y the opening movement of each of the covers. These trays are preferably disposed within thecase in two superposed series, the total width of the trays being substantially the same as that of the case in order to provide a maximum carrying capacity. These trays furthermore are disposed well above the bottom of the case when it is closed so that a substantial storage space is provided beneath the trays. The trays and storage space in the carrying case of the present invention are entirely accessible when the covers are opened, whereby articles can be easily disposed therein and removed therefrom.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, the case in genthe carrying case eral comprises a box A, a pair of covers B and C, and trays D, E, F and G disposed within the box A. The box A of the carrying case comprises a bottom 1, side walls 2 and end 5 walls 3. The bottom 1 and side walls 2 are tively. As shown in Fig. 5, the side walls 2 are formed at their upper edges with inwardly ofiset flanges 6, which flanges are doubled back at their marginal edges 7 to provide smooth edges and to add rigidity to the structure. The integral connections between the oflset flanges 6 and the body portions of the walls 2 form shoulders 8 for a purpose to be later described.
The end walls'3, like the side walls 2, are also preferably formed with ofl'set flanges 9 at their upper edges, as shown in Fig. 4, and the marginal edges are bent inwardly to form flanges 10 which support the trays when they are in their normal unextended position.
The trays D, E, F and G are each of substantially rectangular shape and preferably of the same size. These trays are shown as symmetrically disposed with respect to the longitudinal center line of the box A and as approximately one-half the width thereof. The dimensions of the trays, of course, may be varied to suit articular circumstances, and may be divide into compartments of the desired size by suitable partitions (not shown), as is well known in the art. Each series of trays may comprise one or more trays, and for certain purposes one of the series may be omitted so that the trays may-be approximately the same width and length as the box A. It is to be noted, however, that the combined width of the two series of trays, when two series are employed, is substantially the same width as the box A.
Each of the trays is preferably formed from a single sheet of metal bent into the required size to form sides 11, a bottom 12 and ends 13 which may be formed with flanged portions 14 that may be welded or otherwise secured to the sides 11. The trays D and F in normal position substantially completely cover the top of the box A and are supported above the bottom 1 of the box by the inwardly extending flanges 10 formed at the uppermost marginal edges of the side wall flanges 9.
The trays E and G of the two series, in normal position, seat in superposed relationship upon the trays D and F, respectively.
The covers B and C are each preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal, and and rovided with a side 15, an integral top 16 and end walls 17. The connections between the end walls and side and top may, if desired, be strengthened by strips 18 of metal welded or otherwise secured thereto. The inner marginal edges of the top end walls of the ,the trafys covers B and C are formed with. outwardiy ofiset flange portions 19 and 20 extending mm the bottom of one end wall up and over the top 16 and down to the lower ed of the other end wall. The portion 19 for t e coyer B, however, is preferably ofiset to a reater extent than the portion 20 so that t e port1ons will overlap each other when the covers are closed, as shown in the different views, to provide a substantially water-proof cover- 111 y for the case.
h e lower edge of the cover side walls are p ro v1ded with suitable hinges 21 which are rlgidly secured to the side wall flanges 6 adjacent the shoulders 8. These hinges 21 are of less width than the shoulders 8 so that when the covers are closed the sides 15 thereof will be substantially flush with the side walls 2 of the box A, and so that the lower edges of the sides 15 will substantially meet the side walls 2 to rovide a neat appearin 'oint. The end wa ls 17 of the covers B and d, like the side walls 15, when they are closed overlap each other and substantially form continuations of the end walls 3 of the box A.
In order that the trays may be moved into outwardly extending position and in order that they may be moved by the covers B and Q, suitable linkages are provided. Thus, links 26 are secured to the outer sides of the flan es 9 of the box and to the opposite ends of t e trays D and F near their innermost sides. Links 27 are secured at their lower ends to the flanges 9, at their upper ends to the trays E and G near their innermost sides and intermediate their ends to the ends of D and F near the central portions thereo Links 28 are also secured to the ends of the trays D and F and to the ends of the trays E and G. The links 26, 27 and 28 are arranged to remain always in parallel relation to each other so that the pivotal connections between the links 26 and 27, and the flanges 9 and trays D and F, and between the links 27 and 28, and the trays D, F, and E, G, respectively, substantially form the corners of parallelograms. The connections of the links to the trays and box flan es may be advantageously made by suitablb rivets 29 or any other desirable securing means.
In order that the trays may be operated by the movement of the covers, links 30 are shown as secured to the tray D and cover 0 and to the tray F and cover B, respectively. The links .30 are preferably secured to the trays D and F at the connections of the links 28 therewith. The outer ends of the links 30, as shown, are offset and secured by the rivets 31 to the end walls 17 of the covers B and C.
The covers B and C may be rovided with suitable locking means 32 an the cover B may be rovided with a suitable handle 33 so that t e carrying case can be'conveniently carried.
When the cover B is moved to a partial open position, the trays F and G are moved outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and when moved to completely open position the trays F and G are moved to the outwardly extending position shown in Fig. 3. Likewise, when the cover C is moved to open position, the trays D and E are moved to outwardly extending position over the box side wall, as shown in Fig, 3. It will be noted that the height of the side walls 2 of the box portion A is such that the trays 4 and 6 may be readily moved'thereover when the trays are moved to outwardly extending position. When in outwardly extending position the trays D and F partially rest upon the horizontal flanges 10 and, if desired, the side walls 2 may be of such height that the trays D and F may rest thereon in extended position.
It is also to be noted that the trays E and G are partially supported by the trays D and respectively, when in outwardly extending position, and that when the trays are in superposed relationship they are supported by the horizontal flanges 10 above the bottom of the box.
The covers when in 0 n position are supported by the links ii' om the trays, these links .being preferably of such length that the covers may be maintained in relatively closely adjacent position to the trays.
It is to be particularly noted that when the case is closed, there is waste space above the u permost trays. It will moreover be noted t at by means of the improved construction a storage space of any desired size may be provided beneath the trays. In such cases the space beneath the trays may also be subdivided into suitable compartments by conventional partition members (not shown).
It will thus be seen by arranging the top and sides of the covers in overlapping relationship, that moisture such as rain cannot thereof.
It will furthermore be seen that an im proved case construction is provided wherein a plurality of series of su erposed trays may be disposed, such trays ing movable into outwardly extended position by a minimum movement of a pair of covers. It will also be seen that the links connecting the trays are secured to the box externally of the oilset upper flanges so that such links will be protected at all times.
Furthermore, it is ,to be understood that the partiticular features of construction and combinations of parts shown and described,
are presented for purposes of explanation and illustration and that various modifications thereof can be made without departin from my invention as defined in the append claims.
