This invention relates to sheet metal carrying cases, and more particularly to such cases containing trays which may be moved into outwardly extending position.
An object of my invention is to provide a weather-proof sheet metal kit or case having a pair of covers and containing one or more tl'ays movable into outwar-dly extended posltion by the opening of said covers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a case having advantageous structural features and characteristics.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal case containing a plurality of trays with relatively'high end walls, said end walls being so shaped to provide full access to said trays when said trays are in extended position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved case having a pair of covers and'containing a plurality of trays, certain of which are moved into outwardly extended position upon the opening of each of said covers.
Another object of my invention is tol provide a sheet metal case having two series of superposed trays disposed side by side, said `trays extending substantia-lly the entire width of the case, storage space being provided within said case beneath said trays.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a sheet metal carrying case, advantageous means for supporting the trays within said case well above the bottom thereof.

A further object of this invention is to provide a sheet metal case having a pair of covers and a plurality of trays, certain of which are moved into outwardly extended position upon the opening of each of said covers, wherein said covers when in open position are supported by said extended trays and in relatively closely adjacent position thereto.
Another object of m'y invention is to provide a neat and compact sheet metal carrying i case which may be used for a wide variety of purposes, including, for example, the carrying of fish'ing tackle.
Other objects of the 'invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the description of it hereinafter given.

My invention contemplates a neat and compact sheet metal carrying case having a pair of covers. The case is arranged to contain trays, certain of which are moved into out- Wardly extending position upon the opening of each of said covers. The trays may preferably be disposed in two series of superposed trays within the case, the total width of the trays being substantially the same as that of the case in order to provide trays of maxi mam carrying capacity. The case is so arranged that When the covers are open, any and all trays are entirely accessible to dispose articles in or remove articles from said trays. T he trays, moreover, are arranged to be disposed well above the bottom of the case when the case is closed whereby to provide storage space beneath said trays. v

will be noted that the combined width of the two series of trays is substantially the same width as the box 1.
The box 1 is shown as comprising the bottom 10, side Walls 11 and end walls 12. The side walls 11 and botto1n10 may, as shown in the drawings, comprise a continuous sheet of metal joined by suitable seams 13 and 14 (F ig. 1) to the end Walls 12.` The side walls 11 are shown as inwardly offset at 15 adjacent their upper edges, and the upper edges of the side walls 11 are shown as turned over at 16 to provide smootlmess and rigidity.
The end walls 12 extend preferably to the top of the case, the portions of said end walls above the upper edgres of the' said -side walls .bcinbnr preferably peakcd or substantially triangular in shape for purposes to be hereinafter morel fully described. The peaked portions 17 of -the end walls 12 may be inwardly fianged as indicated at 18 in Figs. 2 and 4 to provide rigidity and strength to-said end walls as well as provide a smooth outer edge thereto. It may frequently be desired to provide a strengthening member of rib 19 inwardly of and adjacent said flanged portions 18, which said ribs 19 and fianges 18 may be secured together as by welding.
Spaced from the bottom 10 and secured to each of the end walls 12 are the brackets 20 which may be of angular cross section and which preferably contact with the respective end walls throughout their length. The brackets 20 may be secured to the end walls 12 by suitable means such as the rivets 21. The brackets 20 are shown as having horizontal upper surfaces 22 upon which the lowermost trays 4 and 6 may bo disposed when the case is closed. The brackets 20 are also arranged to cooperatc with links to be later described. The brackets 20 morcovcr have the substantially Vertical portions 23 spaccd from the end walls to which links may be secured.
The trays 4, 5, 6 and 7 are each shown as being of substantially rectangular Shape, the trays being preferably of the same' size. The trays are shown as symmetrically disposed with respect to the longitudinal center line of the box and are each shown as being of substantially the same length as the box 1 and as of approximately one-half the width thereof. The dimensions of said trays may, of course, be varied to suit particular circnmstances. The trays may be divided into compartments of particular size and shape by suitable partitions (not shown) as is well known in the art.
The ends ofthe trays 4, 5, 6 and 7 may be rcinforced by members 24 to provide a more rigz'id connection ef saidV trays to the links to be later described. The members 24 may' be secured to the trays 4` 5. 6 and 7 by ani7 V suitable means, such as by the hollow rivets 25. n order that the trays may be moyed into outwardly extending position and in order that said trays may be moved by the covers 2 vand 3, suitable linkage is provided. Thus,
links 26 are secured to-the brackets 20 and trays 4 and 6. Links 27 are secured to brackets 20 and trays 4 and 5, and 6 and 7 and links 28 are secured to trays 4 and 5, and 6 and 7. The links 26 and 27 may be advantageously secured to the substantially Vertical ,portions 23 of the brackets 20 spaced from the end walls 12. The links 26, 27 and 28 are arranged to remain always in parallel relation to each other. Connections of the links to the brackets 20 .and to the trays may be advantageously made by the hollow rivets 25. In order to prevent binding and to obtain smooth operation of the links, bushings 29 (Figs. 5 and 7) may bel disposed intermediate the rivets 25 and the links.
Tn order that the trays may be operated by movement of the covers, links 30 are .shown as secured to the tray 4 and cover 2, the tray 6 and cover 3, respectively. The links 30 are shown as secured to the trays 4 and 6 atthe connections of the links 28 to said trays. The outer ends of the links 30 are shown as off-set and as secured by the rivets 31 to the fianges 32 and 33 of the covers 2 and 3 respectively.
The cover 2 is secured to the inwardly offset portion of the side wall 11 by a suitable pintle 34. Referring particularly to Flg. 4, the cover 2 extends from the pintle 34 upwardly of and in substantially fiush relation to the side wall 11. From a point slightly above the top of the tray 5 of the adjacent series 8, the cover extends toward the top of the end walls 12. The upper portion ofthe cover 2 is offset as at 35 and overturned at its upper edge at- 36 for strength and rigidityvand rests. when in closed position, upon the end walls 12. The cover 3 is hing'ed to the inwardly o fset portion 15 of the side wall 11 by the pintle 37 and is disposed in substantlally flush relation to the side wall 11. The cover` 3 ex,- tcnds upwardly from the pintle adJacent the trays 6 and 7. From a point shghtly above the tray 7 the cover extends 1n an 1nclined manner toward the top of the end walls 12 over said end walls, and over the inwardly offset portion 35 of the cover 2, the outer edge of the cover 2 being overturned as at 38 for strengthening purposes. By reason of the inwardly offset portion 35 the covers 2 and 3 may meet in substantially fiush relation. As mentioned above, when the covers are closed the cover 2 rests directly upon andis supported bv the peaked portions 17 of the end walls 12. 'The covers 2 and 3 might, of

The covers 2 and 3, when in open position, are supported by links from the trays, said links 30 being` preferably of such length that the covers 2 and 3 may be maintained in relatively closely adjacent position to said trays. i
Referring again to Fig. 6, it will be noted that the upper 'portion of the end walls 12 are so shaped that full access may be had to each of the trays 4 and 6 when the case is opened. In some cases, however, it may be desirable to have the upper portions of the end walls 12 of reetangular shape rather than of the peaked shape shown in the drawings.
Referring particularly to Fig. 4, it will be noted that when the case is closed there is relativelv little waste space above the trays 5 and 7 and yet the case is of very pleasing It will moreover be noted that appearance. by means of my improved construction a storage space of any desired size may be provided beneath the trays. In such cases the space beneath the trays may'also be subdivided into suitable compartments by suitable well knownj partition members (not shown). It willthus be seen by mv construction wherein tlcie end walls extend substantially to the top of the case, that inoisture such as rain cannotreadily enter the case to damag'e the contents thereof.
It will further be n'oted that by arranging suitable overlying cover portions Cooperating with the relatively' high side walls, that j I have provided a kit which is of siibstani tially weather-proof construction.
It will also be noted that I have provided an improved construction of neat and compact character whereby trays may be readily disposed within the case well above the bottom thereof and inovable into outwardly eX- -tended position by movement of the covers.
It will furthermore be seen that I have It will also be seen that I have provided a case containing a pliirality of snpei'posed trays. said trays being` so arranged that when the case is in closed position the lowei'inost of said trays will rest in a position not lower than the upper edge of the side walls.
It will moreover be noted that the inwardly-oifset portions of the side walls and covbers as 'well as provide flush meeting edges of the covers witli each other and with the respective side walls.
Furtherinore, it is to be understood that the particular forms of apparatus shown 'and described, and the particular procedure set forth, are presented for purposes of explanation and illustration and that various inodii fications of said apparatus and 'procedure can be made without departing from my invention as defined in the appended claims.

3. In a sheet metal carrying case, in com-.
bination, a substantially rectangular box having relatively low side walls and end walls extending above' the upper edges of said side walls substantially to the top of said case brackets securedto said end walls, each said bracket contacting throughout substantially its entire length with one of said end walls7 said brackets having portions spaced from said end walls to which links may be secured and having tray supporting surfaces not lower than the upper edges of said side walls, a plurality of laterally disposed series of superposed trays supported on said tray supporting surfaces of said brackets, links secured to said link securing bracket portions and to said trays, covers hiuged to said side walls and to cooperatively enclose said case and links connecting each said cover to certain of said trays, whereby said trays may be moved into outwardly extending position upon the opening of said covers, and vice versa.

In a rigid sheet metal carrymg case, 1n combination, a substantially rectangular box having relatively low side walls and end walls extending above the upper edges of said side walls substantially to the top of said case, the portions of said end walls above said side walls being peaked, a. metala'einforcing member bent into peaked shape and disposed interiorly of each said end walladjacent the edge of each said peaked port-ion, the edge of lthe peaked portion of each said end wall being bent inwardlv over each said reinforcing member to form an inwardly extend'ing fiange, brackets secured to said end walls, said brackets contacting with said end walls throughout substantially their entire lengths and having tray supporting surfaces not lower than the upper edges of said side walls, said reinforcing members and brackcts iniparting rigidlyv to said end walls, covers hinged to said side/walls and cooperating;` to enclose said case, a. tray supported on said bracket and connected by links-tosaid brackets and to one of said covers whereby said tray may be moved into outwardly extending position upon the opening of said cover and vice versa.

In a sheet in'etal carrying case; in combination, a substantially rectangular box having relativelylow side walls and end walls extending above the upper edfres'of said side wallsl substantially to the top of said case, the portions of said. end walls above saidside walls being peaked, braekets secured to said end walls. said brackets contactin; with said end walls throughoutsubstan- :tesaoec ported on said tray supporting surfaces of said brackets, the lowermost of each series of trays having a width equal to approximately one-half the width of said box, links secured to said brackets and to the ends of said trays, a first cover hinged to one of said side walls extending upwardly substantially to the top of the adj acent series of trays and thence to- Ward the opposite side wall and resting upon said end walls, a second cover hinged to the other side wall extending upwardly substantially to the top of the adj acent series of trays and thence toward said first side wall to overlie said first cover, and links secured to each series of trays and to the adjacent cover whereby a series of trays may be moved into out-wardly extending position upon the open- 1ne' of each cover and vice versa. i. which outwardly extending' position the lowermost of said series of trays will be supported on said tray supporting surfaces of said brackets.

In a'sheet metal carrying case, in combination, a substantially 'rectangular box having end walls and side walls, said end Walls being peak-shaped and extending substantially to the top of said case and above the upper' edges of said side walls, means carried by'said box to support trays above the bottom of said box, covers hinged to said side walls, a pair of trays supported on said supporting means, linkage connecting said box and trays and connecting each of said trays With one of said covers, said covers'overlapping the peak-shaped end walls, Whereby a rigid construction is provided, and the trays and link mechanisrn are protected from end shocks.
