Description
i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK J. MIX, oE NEWARK, AssIeNoR To EDWIN E. LEE, CE RAYCNNE, NEW .IERsEY,.AND GEORGE W. CABLE, 0E NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON=FASTENINGS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 150,878, dated May 12, 1874; application filed March 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. MIX, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Button-Fastenin gs, of which the following is a specification:
rlhis invention relates to button-fastenings, made up of a metallic or other disk and tongue, the latter of which is suitably bent and pro jected through the material to which the button is applied, andthrough the shank of the button, and afterward through the material again, to unite or lock with the disk 5 and it has Inore particular reference to such kinds of fastenings in which thetongue and disk are made of one piece, whereby increased facility is af forded in the application of the fastening. The invention consists in providing` a disk with a tongue having a sharp or pointed tongue-edge, and a slot or hole for the tongue to pass through, and a groove or recess for the free end of the tongue to lie in, whereby isproduced a button-iastening capable of being applied with perfect ease and facility.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a view in perspective, upon an enlarged scale, of my improved button-fastening prior to its projection through the material and attachment ofthe button, said view being Iromthe inner side of the disk. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, looking toward the inner side of the disk, and showing the tongue as bent and locked with the disk. Fig. 3 is a transverse or side sectional view of the fastening, as applied to secure a button to the material.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the disk of metal or other suitable marounded at its outer end, in contradistinction to a` tongue of T shape or spread construction at its outer extremity, whereby Increased fa oility is afforded for projecting the tongue through the material to which the but-ton is to be attached. Said tongue, after projection through the material, is bent to pass through the sha-nk b of the button C, as represented in Fig. 3, and its free end passed through a hole or slot, c, in the disk and its free or outer bent portion made to lie in a recess or groove, d, in the outer face of the disk, and the extremity of its free end bent inward over the outer margin of the slot c, and afterward turned to one side to lok or hold the fastening, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Such arrangement of the free end of the tongue not only'effectually locks or holds the fastening, but insures a flush or smooth eXte- I'ior surface to the disk and tongue locking therewith, which prevents all possibility of the fastening catching or, in other words, olferin g objectionable obstruct-ion.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
, A button-fastenin g constructed of one piece of material, as herein shown and described, consisting of the disk A, having the sharppointed tongue IB, groove d, and slot c, as and for the purpose specified and described.
FREDCK. J. MIX.
