Description

,Sept. 9 1924. I
* w. M. HICKS CIGARETTE HOLDER AND CASE Filed May 12. 1921 Patented Sept. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM M. HICKS, OF CRANFORD, NEW JERSEY.
CIGARETTE HOLDER AND CASE.
Application filed May 12, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. HICKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cranford, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette Holders and Cases, of which the following is a" specification.
This invention pertains to an improved combined cigarette holder and case, and has 'for its objects among others, the following: The provision of means whereby when the holder is inserted into the case, the stump of the cigarette will be automatically ejected.
The provision of means for disinfecting the holder or counteracting the odor which is commonly present about the holder so that the holder and case may be carried 2 upon the person without being offensive.
The provision of means for effecting the collapse or telescoping of the holder as it is inserted in the case, and the extension thereof when it is withdrawn for use. With these and other omects and advantages in view reference will be had to the annexed drawings, wherein,-
Fig. 1 is aside elevation of the case the cover closed; 1
Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 3 a longitudinalsectionalview of the holder shown in its extended position; I Fig. 4 a similar view ofthecase with the cover or closure swung to one side; 7
Fig. 5a detail section of the case body and cover;
Fig. 6 a view showing in sectional elevation certain elements of the structure;
.Fig. 7 a perspective view of the case closure and its directly allied elements;
Fig. 8 a perspective view of the top of the case; and I Fig. 9 a perspective view of the/sliding clutch; I 7 The holder may be said to comprise a-hollow or tapering cigarette receiver 1 in the smaller end" of which is mounted the stem, comprising a head 2 andv the stem proper or mouth piece 3. The head when the parts are in their extended position makes a close binding fit with the interior of the smaller end of the receiver, and a metallic tube or casing't having a stop collar or ring with Serial No. 468,936.
rocation within the casing body: or shell 6 is a clutch element, best seen upon reference to Fig. 9. It may be said tocoinprise a body 9 having spring tongues 10 which make a frictional contact with the inner face of the body 6, while extending up from the body is a reduced spring neck 11 terminating in a head 12, the upper, end whereof has a circular opening ofg.a diameter slightly in excess of that of the casing or tube 4;. Downward movement of the clutch element within the casing is limited by a stop ring 13 sweated or soldered in place. Upward movement oftheclutch is limited by a sliding sleeve 1 L mounted within the case 6 above the clutch member but free; of
any connection therewith. The case adjacent'said sleeve is provided with two diametricallv disposed slots 15 and 16through which pass pivot pins 17 and18 thef'pin's being attached to the lower ends of a pair of arms or'links 19 and 20,,the links in turn being securedat their upper ends to the closure for the case. Saidclosure comprises a cylindrical body or section 21, the
lower edge whereof is inclined to correspond with the face or end 8, and a head 22 which preferably will be made sufficiently heavy to admit its being formed intoa seal if so desired. A ring 23 is secured within the head, said ring serving to hold adeodorizing body as indicated by 24, Figs. 2
and 4, within the head. A. stop collar 25 is secured within the upper end of the case 6 and functions with the receiver to prevent the same from being pushed too far inwardly when the holder i's'telesco'ped within the case.
In the use of the device, and assumingithe at such time is in the position indicated in Fig. 4. Grasping the receiver 1 upon each side, the holder will be pushed inwardly causing sleeve 4 to pass into the slitted spring neck 11 bringing shoulder 5 into contact with head 12, whereupon the holder and clutch move inwardly together until the clutch element comes into contact with the fixed stop ring 13. Further inward or downward movement of the sleeve 4, stem 3 and head 2 is then arrested and a continued pressure on the receiver 1 causes said holder to slide inwardly over the head and to eject the cigarette or stump from the holder. Inward movement of the receiver 1 is arrested by coming into contact with the stop collar 25, the receiver coming to rest at such point or in such position that a portion thereof is exposed by reason of the inclination given to the upper end 8 of the casing, see Fig. 2. The closure may then be swung upwardly from the position in Fig. 4 to that in Fig. 5, the links allowing the closure to clear the outwardly projecting portion of the receiver after which it may be moved downwardly into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, where it overlaps the end of the receiver and is thus prevented from again swinging laterally until it is again lifted free of the receiver.
To remove the holder from the casing the reverse of the operations just described is effected. The closure is pulled outwardly away from the casing and then swung laterally. The user then grasps the receiver 1 and pulls upon the same. The receiver first slides up and into contact with the head 2 of the stem and continued movement draws the clutch member up within the case until it is arrested by contacting sleeve 14. The final pull upon the receiver 1 withdraws or releases tube 4 .from the clutch neck and in so doing the head 2 becomes firmly seated within the receiver or holder proper.
As will be seen upon reference more particularly to Figs. 4, 5 and 7, the cover or closure 21 is provided with a notch 26 which when the closure is brought to place admits of the insertion of a pin or the point of a knife blade to force the cover upwardly, if for any unforeseen reason it should stick.
that is claimed is,
'1. In combination with a telescopic cigarette holder having a mouthpiece; body within which the collapsed holder may be housed; means located within the body adapted to frictionally engage the mouthpiece and to retain the same until the holder is drawn outwardly in an extended condition; a closure for the body adapted when the holder is collapsed and passed into the body to overlie the cigarette holding end of theholder and a deodorizing body mounted within the closure.
.2. In .combinationwith a cylindrical body a clutch element slidabl-y mounted therein;
3.111 combination with a cylindrical body; a member mounted for longitudinal movement therein, said member having a frictional engagement with the wall of the body, and likewise having an upwardly extending hollow clutch element; and a cigarette holder comprising a. receiver and a stem arranged in telescopic relation therewith, said stem being adapted to be passed into holding contact with the .clutch element and to move inwardly with the .same and the member aforesaid whereby the holder may be housed within the body and, when pulled outwardly, will be automatically extended.
