COMBINED CANE AND FISH-ROD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Application filed July 24, 1919. Serial No. 312,944.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS POREMBA, a citizen of Poland, residing at Rome, county of Oneida, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Canes and Fish- Rods, of which the following is a specifica- Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal sectional view-taken through an embodiment of the invention, the parts being shown in a closed,
retracted position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same, the parts being in an extended position, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the tip end of the cane.
The invention is comprised of a plurality of sectional, telescopically united tubes, the main or upper section 10 which forms the exterior of the cane body, being suited to receive the next adjacent section '11, inclosing a third section 12, which in turn receives the lower or innermost section 13.
A hollow handle 14 is provided with a, screw-threaded plug 15, suited to be re ceived in the internally threaded, upper end of the outer tube 10, through which passes a pin 16, having a head 17, by which it is held in connection with the tube.
At the opposite end of the handle 14 is a cover plate 18, hingedly engaged by the pin 19 with the bracket 20, formed with the handle, opposite to which is a lug extension formed with the cover plate 18, presenting two angular faces 21 and 22, converging at a common point, against which-is pressed the free end of a flat spring 23, riveted to the handle in such manner that the plate 18 may be held closely adjacent to the end of the hollow tubular handle, as shown in Fig. 1, or the plate held extended therefrom when the spring 23 is in contact with the face 21.
Extending radially outward from a point near the end of the outer tube 10 is a pin 24 adapted to engage in a bayonet joint slot 25, formed in a cap 26, the lower beveled portion 2'? having an open aperture 28, receptive of a tip or pin 29, extending downward from the circular plate 30, in the interior of the cap 26 and rigidly engaged with the lower end of the inner smaller tube 13.
Formed at the upper end of the inner tube 13 is a head 31 mounting a plunger 32, its point 33 being pressed outward due to a coiled compression spring 34, so as to engage in an opening 35, formed in the enveloping tube 12, which in turn is provided with a head 36, carrying a plunger 37, pressed out by the spring 38, its point 39 being engageable in a similar opening 40 formed in the next adjacent tube 11, which in turn has a head 41, carrying a plunger 42, pressed outwardly by the spring 43, the point 44 of the plunger being engageable in an opening 45, formed in the walls of the outer tube 10.
A coiled compression spring 46 is arranged interiorly of the outer tube 10 pressing against the plate 30 at one end and the lower end of the tube 11, when the cap 26 is in place, holding the parts against displacement. A similar spring 47 extends between the heads 36 and 41 so that upon the cap 26 being released, the inner tubes are forced outwardly, the various spring pressed plungers entering their appropriate openings in the next circumjacent tubes, holding the parts when extended from further separation until the plungers have been pressed inwardly in a manner which will be clearly apparent, while the tubular handle 14 may be used as a receptacle for lines, hooks and other accessories so that the same may be carried in a convenient and practical manner.
The method of extending the cane, so as to be used as a fishing rod, will be clearly apparent from the foregoing description, it merely consisting in removing the cap 26 and withdrawing the tubular elements until the plunger pins have entered the corresponding openings, holding the several tubes rigidly extended, and conversely, when it is desired to use the implement as a cane, the plunger pins are pressed inward, permitting each of the several telescopic sections to be entered, one after the other and 7 the cap replaced, whereupon the device may be used as a cane or walking stick in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention'wha't I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is'
In a combined telescopic cane and fishing pole having a hollow handle for the storage of fishing paraphernalia,- the combination of a plurality of telescopic sections, spring pressed plungers' in each of said sections adapted to enter openings in the next adjacent section, a cap for closing the lower end of the cane a spring for forcing the sections out of the cane upon the removal of said cap, anda spring for holding the parts against displacement within the cane when 'said'cap is in place.
