Be it knownthat I, ANKER S. LYHNE, a citizen of the United States, residing atl Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Vanity Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to vanity boxes and has for an object to provide a box of this type which will be neat and attractive in appearance, light weight, convenientto use, and will require a small space only in aladys handbag or pocketbook.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a vanity box adapted to carry coni` pacts of two diferent kinds of powder with a separate puff for each compact, and will carry them in distinct andv separate coinpartinents, so that there will be no mixing of the diiferent kinds of powder.

It is aI still further object of the invention to provide a combination* putl and powder compact receptacle.

The box shown comprises two cup shaped sections preferably made of thin sheet metal and finished in any desired manner with or without decorationo'n the outer walls thereof. In' the showing in the drawing the thickness ofthe various walls is somewhat exaggerated. The two sections of the-box comprise the bodysection 10 and the' cover ysection 11 preferably hinged together by a hinge12, thesectionsy of this hinge being secured toV the sections of the boX by any suitable means, but preferably by lugs 18 boX.

The upper side of the side wall of the lower section* 10 is rolled `to provide a flange 14: of somewhat smaller diameter than Vthat of the body of the section so that it is adapted to telescope within the cover section 11 and also to provide a shoulder 15 to form a top for the edge of the cover section and give a smooth, continuous and neat appearance to the outer walls of the box when theptwo sections are closed together. Referring -to Fig. 4' where the construe tion of'this receptacle is shown in detail, it comprises a lower member 18 provided with an upturned circumferential iange 19. This flange may also be inclined inwardly' somewhat. Coacting` with this member to form a receptacle, also preferably of sheet metal, is an upper member 20 and shaped substantially as shown with adownwardly extending flange 21 adapted for telescopingL llO engagement with flange 1,9, and having an upper portion 22 of less diameter forming a flange orv bead 23 adapted to be gripped by the user vto facilitate holding of the receptacle and use of the puff carried on the exterior of this receptacle. This puff is shown at24 and it may be of any desired material such as a body cloth 25 carrying the usual nap, and covers the bottom surfaceof the lower member V18. It may be secured thereto by various means, but I prefer to extend it up Y over the top of flange 19 and clamp it between the two flanges 19 and 21 whereby it is securely held in position. The upper member 20 is'provided with an opening 26 in the top thereof which is closed by a cover 27 hinged at 28 and is held in closed position by a downwardly projecting lug 29 arranged to engage the forward edge of this opening. -This will securely hold the cover vin closed position,kbut will yield'to allow easy opening of the'co'ver to allow access tothe receptacle by insertion of a finger nail under an upwardly bent portion 30 of cover. Secured in this receptacle by any suitable means such as cement, is the rouge Y compact 31 and above this a second puff 32, vwhich may be the ordinary cloth puff Vhaving a ribbon handle 32 for use in connection with this compact.

It will be obvious from an inspection of Figs. 2 andv 3 that the arrangement is'very compact.V When tliecover 11 is raised the combination puff and vrouge receptacle, reina-ins closed and by merely gripping the flange or bead 23 which forms a convenient holding means, the puff 24 may be used for Vthe application of the white powder with# out in any way disturbing the rouge Vcompact Vor having anything to do with the saine. Should it, however, be desired to use theV rouge compact all that is necessary is t0- raise the Vcover 27 when the rouge puff 32 will be easily accessible. It will also be apparent that the two compacts are in entirely different 'compartments and so are separated at all times and there is no liability' of their Furthermore, by the peculiar arrangement employed the first operation of opening the box gives access to 'the white powder only and if it is desired to use the rouge powder the second cover' 27 must be opened. This eliminates the very undesirable feature of some boxes provided with two kinds of powder in which the'act of opening the main box may give access to either one, so that the user never knows in advance to which powder the box will open.

`Within the cover section 11 is mounted the usual mirror 33 secured therein by a thin metal ring 34 havinga forced fit with the interior of the cover. Y

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown two slightly different ways of securing the puff 24 to the rouge receptacle.

The metal parts of the Yreceptacle are the saine -as shown in Fig, t, but instead of clamping the puff between the flanges 19 and 21 I may form a loop 35 about the edge thereof and insert therein an elastic 36 which will hold the puff in position. This renders Vthe puff Veasily removable from and applied to the holder to allow Y *easy renewal should Vit become soiled. In'- steadv of the elastic I may employ a draw tape or ribbon 37 as shown in Fig. 6 for holding the pui? to the receptacle.
