UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS MESSER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part Of Letters Patent No. 150,071, dated April 21, 1874 application tiled Marchv 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS MESSER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part 0f this speciiication, in which drawing- Figure l represents a longitudinal section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the base-plate.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists of a buckle composed of a base-plate stamped up with a bridge7 with retaining-hooks, and with a locking-lip, and with overlapping langes, for the reception of an ornamental face-plate, in such a manner that different face-plates can be combined -with the same base-plate7 and that a durable buckle of a highly-ornamental character can be produced at a comparatively low price.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the base-plate of my buckle, which is made ot a cheap metal, and which is stamped up with a bridge, a, with hooks b, and with a locking-lip, c, all formed on its under surface. The strap B, after having been passed through over the bridge a, is hooked on the hooks b,
'while the opposite end of said strap is provided with a catch, d, and, after the strap has been passed round the body, this catch is made to engage with the locking -lip c, as shown in Fig. l. The edges of the base-plate are turned up so as to form overlapping lan ges e, which serve to retain the face-plate O. This face-plate is made of gold or any costly material, or it may be made of any desired material', and ornamented to suit the taste of the public; and it is made to slide in between the flanges c, its end being provided with a locking-stop, f, which, after the face-plate has been pushed home, is clinched, so as to retain the two parts firmly together.
It will be readily seen that by these means a buckle is produced which can be made highly ornamental, and which can be changed by inserting face-plates of various forni into the flanges of the base-plate, the latter forming the retaining parts of the buckle; and since this base-plate is stamped up with all its parts out of a solid piece of sheet metal, my buckle can be furnished at a comparatively low price. Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A buckle composed of a base-plate, A, stamped up with a bridge, a, hooks b, lockinglip c, and overlapping flanges e, for the reception of the face-plate C, substantially as shown and described.
LOUIS MESSER.
