To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, WALLACE DOUMA and JAMES DOUMA, citizensof the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Saw Gauges, of which the followedge strip of metalwhenever a straight-edge Asaw is not available, the article being additionally characterized by its simplicity of construction and ease ofI application to conventional types lof saws.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood whenthefollowing detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction,
\ combination, and ,arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Y j Figure 1 is an elevational view of one end of a conventional type of saw, our attachment being shown in position thereon, and. certain of the elements thereof being shown in full and dotted line positions;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross-sectional view upon the line 3-3 of the same gure; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a metallic strip that may be employed in conjunction with our invention in lieu of a straight-edge saw. v
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a saw of conventional type constituting the usual blade 6 and handle 6. It is necessary however, that our device be employed with a saw of a character wherein the handle thereof has vertical edges a at opposite sides of the saw blade as well as beveled or obliquely inclined edges 7) at the upper end of the handle and being a continuation of said vertical edges.

The opening in the arm 7 upon one .side of the split portion is screwfthreaded for the reception of the screw-threaded end of said bolt 8. i
Also straddling the saw blade 6, and adjustably connected to the rearwardlyvinclined portion 7 Aof the arm 7 isa split liquidvlevel 10. `This level is provided adjacent its upper end withl av relatively long slot 11 through which is extended a pin l12, the opposite ends thereof being headed as ends of a pair of links 14 to they said level v10. rIhe opposite ends of the-se links are slotted at 15 and projecting therethrough are the opposite ends ofa headed bolt 16. Inwardly of the headed end of this bolt, the same is formed with a square portion 17, which fits within the slot of the adjacent link for preventing the turning of the said bolt. The link 14 is connected with the level 10 at a point above the straight edge of the blade 6. The opposite end of this bolt is screw-threaded for receiving a wing-nut 18, which nut will effectively blind the links upon opposite sides of the rearwardly in clined portion 7 of the arm 7 for maintaining the level 10 in adjusted positions with respect to said arm. When our device is employed in conjunction with a saw, and the level 10 is in a position as shown by the full lines of Fig. 1, there is provided a complete beveled square. When this level 10 is in a vertical position as per the dotted lines of thi-s figure, itwill be seen that there is provided a square gauge.
It is of course, to be` understood that our attachment in no way interferes with the proper manipulation of the saw itself7 it being noted that by releasing the wing-nut 18, the level 10 may be extended upwardly away from the teeth of the saw blade.
However, at any time, if a saw should not be available, and it is desired to use our device, we have provided a metallic strip 19 (Fig. 4), having an opening 20 therein and adjacent one of its ends. This strip is vadapted to be secured to the arm 7 through the instrumentality of the bolt 8 and extends at right angles to the arm, and will effectively substitute Jfor the straight edge of the saw blade.
lf the gauge 7 is not employed upon a saw blade' 6 as illustrated in Fig. 1, the blade 19, as shown in Fig. 4, is used. The structure shown in Fig. 1 involves a handle applied to the blade, and which is lacking upon the blade 19. The handle of the saw is used as a means tor eiiecting the quick and accurate adiustment of the gauge.
This handle might be `dispensed with, but ot course it would require the exercise of some judgment to assemble the gauge 7 accurately upon the blade 1.9, as shown in Fig. 4. When the gauge is once positioned thereon and accurately disposed, it may be used as `convenientiy and 'eiffectually as though it were mounted upon a saw blade.
Although rwe have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be yunderstood that minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the Yspirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In combination with a blade having a straight edge, a handle applied to the blade and provided with a straight edge disposed at a right angle to the straight edge of the blade, said handle also having a straight edge which is disposed at an acute angle to both of the before-mentioned straight edges, a split arm adapted to straddle the blade and having end portions which bear against both of the straight edges of the handle, one edge ot the arm when so applied being disposed at al right angle to the straight edge of the blade, a liquid level adapted to be disposed along the side of the blade, and a link connecting the level with the arm at a point above the straight edge of the blade, and means for securing the level at a fixed position with relation to the arm and the blade whereby the level may be disposed along the straight edge of the arm or along the edge ot the obliquely disposed portions ot the arm with which the said level is connected.
2. In combination with a blade having a straightedge, an arm adapted to be secured thereto and having a straight edge adapted to be disposed at a right angle to the straight edge of the blade, said arm having obliquely disposed end portions, a liquid level a-dapted to be disposed transversely ot the blade, a link connecting the level with the arm at a point above Ithe straight edge of the blade, means for securing the level at a i'ixed position with relation to the blade and the arm whereby the level may be disposed with one of its edges at a right angle to the straight edge of the blade or in a line parallel with the edge of that obliquely disposed end portion of the arm to which the level is connected.
