Description

Dec. 15, 1964 H. G. EHlL LIPS STOP ATTACHMENT FOR RULES Filed Aug. 25, 1961 INVENTOR. #595627 G pfi/LL/PQ ATTORNEY United States Patent Ofiice 3,160,957 STOP ATTACHMENT FOR RULES Herbert G. Phillips, 60 Conklin Ave., Hillsdale, NJ. Filed Aug. 25, 1961, Ser. No. 133,882
2 Claims. (Cl. 33173) This invention relates to a novel stop attachment for rules, including extension rules, and to a novel combination of such stop and a rule.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a more eflicient and more easily usable attachment of the kind indicated for use in scribing lumber for sawing parallel to selected edges thereof, at different predetermined distances from the edges.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of the character indicated above, which slidably embraces a rule, when installed thereon, and which, when the rule, such as an extension rule, is not in use and is folded, can be left in place thereon, without interfering with proper folding of the rule, and wherein means are provided for locking the attachment in storage position at an end of a rule.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple attachment of the character indicated above, which is composed of only two uncomplicated and easily assembled parts, and which can be made in rugged and wellfinished forms, at relatively low cost.
Other important object and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustration only, a specific form of the invention is set forth in detail.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a schematic perspective view, showing an attachment of the present invention installed on a rule, with the rule and the attachment applied to a board to guide a scriber;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of FIG- URE 1;
FIGURE 4 is a bottom perspective view of FIGURE 3;
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of a folded extension rule, showing the attachment secured in storage position thereon; and
FIGURE 6 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 66 of FIGURE 5.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 generally designates a folding extension rule having adjacent sections 12 adapted to register, when folded, as shown in FIGURE 5, and an end section 14 Patented Dec. 15, 1964 14, on which the attachment is mounted, and the leg 28 is somewhat longer than the leg 22.
The legs 22 and 28 are spaced to closely andslidably receive the rule section 14, and are provided with registered threaded openings 32 and 34, respectively. A thumb-screw 36 has ashank 38 threaded in the opening 32 of the leg 22, for clamping engagement with a related surface of the rule section 14, for holding the attachadapted to register with an adjacent section when folded.
However, it will be understood that the attachment of the present invention is applicable not only to an end section 14, as shown, but also to a straight non-folding rule, herein represented by the end section 14.
The illustrated attachment, generally designated 16, comprises a longitudinal arm 18, which comprises a relatively long outer flat portion 20 and a shorter inner portion 22, which is offset laterally inwardly from the outer portion 20 and is parallel thereto. The outer arm portion 20 teminates, at its free end, in a laterally outwardly extending flat transverse stop flange 24. v
The inner arm portion 22 serves as one leg of a fiat I U-sha'ped yoke 26 which includes a flat generally rectangular leg 28 which is spaced parallel from the portion 22 and has, at one longitudinal edge, a bight portion 30 which connects the leg 28 with the related longitudinal edge of the leg 22. As shown in FIGURES 2 and 6, the legs 22 and 28 are preferably narrower than a rule section ment 16 at a desired place along the rule section, related to a linear scale 40 extending therealong. Preferably, the yoke leg 28 is, for an inch scale, one inch in length, so that when its outer end edge 42 is registered with an inch graduation 44, its inner end edge 46 will be registered with a next adjacent inch graduation, of the scale 40, as indicated in FIGURE 1.
For storing the attachment 16 on a rule section, the section is provided with a hole 48 therethrough, as shown in FIGURE 6, through which the shank 38 of the thumbscrew is adapted to be passed, to be threaded into the opening 34 of the leg 28 of the yoke 26, whereby the attachment is releasably locked in place. As shown in FIGURES 5 and 6, the low profile or thinness of the yoke arm 28 does not, in the storage position of the attachment on the end section 14 of the rule 10, produce undue spacing of the end section 14 from an adjacent section 12.
In use and operation, as shown inFIGURE 1, the attachment has its arm 18 at the underside of the rule section 14, so that its stop flange 24 can engage the edge 50 of such as a board B, with the end section bearing upon the upper surface of the board, so that, the attachment having been adjusted" on the rule section, a scriber S is adapted to be held against the free end 52 of the rule section and against the upper surface of the board, the rule section and attachment are adapted to be moved together lengthwise of the board so as to produce a straight, accurate saw guide line L, spaced parallel from the board edge 50 at the desired distance from the edge 50. g
Although there has been shown and described herein a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangements of components thereof are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.
Whatis claimed is: v
1. In combination, a folding extension rule having adjacent sections folded upon each other with a terminal section folded upon and registering with an adjacent section, said terminal section being formed with an unthreaded hole extending therethrough and spaced from said free end, said section having a linear scale on one side thereof, an attachment comprising a U-shaped yoke,
engaged slidably on saidrule section'between the ends thereof, said yoke having parallel spaced first and second legs not longer than the width of the rule section and slidably engaging related surfaces of the rule section, anu
a bight connecting the legs at one end thereof and slidably engaged with an edge of the rule section, said legs being formed with aligned threaded holes which are registered with the hole in said terminal rule section, and a headedscrew extending through the unthreaded hole of the rule sectionand threaded through the threaded holes of the length of the extension is spaced from said other;
side of the rule section.
