" t tt starts sic.
.rnrna L. GLASS, or new HAVEN, CONNECTICUT." I e GARPENTEBS RULE.
Application filed October This invent-ion relates to an attachment for carpenters zigzag rules and has for its object the provision of a device which may be readily Connected to a rule and set in any predetermined position for indicating the bevel of a piece of wood.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device adapted to be readily attached to a carpenters or builders rule and to provide a permanent element for indicating when set at the proper angle the bevel of a piece of wood, spring washers in connection with a thumb screw providing for a locking means and the proper tension for retaining the attachment at the angle desired. 1
This invention will be best understood from the consideration of the following detailed description, (in. view of theaccompanying drawings) forminga part of the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure being susceptible of such changes and modifications as shall define no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
, In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the device constructed according to the principles of my invention, V
Figure 2 is a side viewand elevation of the attachment applied to a rule and in operative position on a board, and
Figure 3 is an end view of the attachment partly in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 10 designates a section of a folding rule 12. The end of this section is embraced by flanges 13 of a metal plate 13, the plate being pinned to-the section 10. The section 10 together with a section 1a are hinged at 15.
' The attachment forming the "embodiment of my invention consists of a bar 19'mounti. ed at one end in a metal plate 22. The metal plate is flanged at 23. for embracing the edges of the bar. The plate is reduced as shown at 25 to form a projection beyond the end 26 of the bar 19. This end is rounded at 27' and perforated to receive a bolt 28.
The metal plate 13 on the end of the bar 10 is provided with a'projection 29 having a 16, 1926. seriaiivo. 141,969.
perforation to receive the bolt28. The projections 25 and 29 are in Contact with each other and are embraced at the .outer faces by spring washers 30 to provide a tension on the said projections. nut 31 is screwed upon the threaded end 32 of the bolt 28 and not only aids in maintain ing the projections 25 and 29 in contact with A knurled thumb I each other but also operates as a lock for retaining the bar 19 in a predetermined angular relationwith the bar 10 when it is desired to indicate the bevel required for a board.
The section 10 of the ruler 12 is shown I i applied to a board 33. in Fig. 2, while the bar 19 is located at an angleto the bar 10 and which angle predetermines the proper bevel desired for shearing the board 38. .A straight edge 34- is applied to the edge 21 of the bar 19 and placed inoverlapping re lation with the board 33 so. that a proper mark may be indicated on the board 33 for cutting as by saw. 7
"When the rule 12 is folded into proper position so that. the sections 10 and 141 are respectively placed in overlapped relation with the sections 16 and 17 the thumb screw 81 may be releasedso that thesection 19 may be revolved on the bolt 28 and placed'in overlapping relation with the section 10..
The thumb nut 31 is then screwed up tight whereby the spring washers will exert sufficienttension on the projections 25 and 129 to maintain the bar 19 in position on the prevented from becoming loose, when the I bevel attachment is oscillated, the end of the bolt is swaged as shown at20 to prevent loss of the nut 31. V
- lVhat I claim is:'
-: .A'n attachment for rules comprising a metal plate having a perforated projection,
said plate having flanges; alongthe edges.
thereof, a bar having, one end received between the flanges and secured to the plate, 7 a second metal plate having flanges along a p portion of the edges thereof,a rule formed of pivotally mounted sections and having an end of an outer section received between the flanges of the second-mentioned plate and securedto plate, jthe second-men tioned plate being provided with a perforated projection, a bolt received by the pen Vforations in the projection and. provided with a head at one end and a thumb nut threaded on the other end, the Pl'OJQCtlODS being in close contact and with the bar 10- I cated on a face which isopposite to the face nut.
