Description

sparse EDWARD LAPOINT, OF GLENS FALLS, NEW YORK.
CALIPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 8, 1917. Serial No. 173,662.
and useful Improvements in Calipers; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in calipers and has for an object to provide as an article of manufacture a caliper which may be constructed in novel manner entirely from sheet metal and may thus be manufactured and marketed at a relatively low cost.
With the above and other objects or similar nature in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a caliper constructed in accordance with the invention,.
Fig. 2 through Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which one of the members of the caliper is formed.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the cali consists of two members 5 and 6 respecti; ely which are superimposed one upon the other and are connected for longitudinal slit ing movement.
is a longitudinal section there- Each of the members 5 and o is stamped in blank from sheet metal such as steel, galvanized tin or the like and of a gage to provide the requisite stiifness. The member 5 consists ofan elongated strip 7 having therein a longitudinal slot 8 and further provided at one end with an enlarged handle portion 9.
At the opposite end of the strip 7 there is formed an integral lateral extension 10 which is bent on the fold line 11 as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 4: to lie in a plane at right angles to the plane of the strip. The member 6 of the caliper also comprises an elongated strip as is indicated at 12 adjacent one end of which there is provided an aperture 13 which registers with the slot 8 in the member 5 to receive therethrough a screw 14 which passes looselythrough the slot and has engaged thereon a wing-nut 15.
The members 5 and 6 are in this manner connected for longitudinal sliding adjustment, the nut 15 being tightened upon the screw to hold the members in adjusted position. The member 6 is likewise provided at its outer end with a lateral extension 16 similar to the extension 10 and bent as is the latter to lie in a plane at right angles to the strip 12. The extensions 10 and 16 thus provide suitable cooperating gage elements between which articles or material to be measured are interposed, and are movable toward and away from each other by reason of the adjustment above described.
The strip 12 of the member 6 has designated on its upper face a suitable scale 17 for indicating the distance between the gage elements 10 and 16. In order to maintain the members 5 and G in longitudinal alinemerit, there are formed on the side of the strip 7 integral fingers 18 which are bent to embrace the strip 12 and serve to guide the latter in its movement.
lVhat I claim is A caliper consisting of a pair of slidably connected members, each to med from a sheet metal blank and being provided at corresponding ends with lateral enensious bent to extend at right angles to the faces of said members and constituting cooperating gage elements, one of said members being provided at its other end with a handle and between said handle and its ele ment being longitudinally siotted and b s further provided on opposite side edges y it integral guide fingers bent to slidably em:
brace the other member, said other member having delineated thereon a scale and having an aperture therein registering with the slot in the first mentioned member, and adjusting means passed through said registering aperture and slot. 7
In testimony whereof, I atliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD LAPOlNl.
