Description

Patented Apr. 22, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCEa MERE/ITT LOUIS EMRICH, F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES FOIL COMPANY, 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, A. CORPORATION 0F KENTUCKY.
CARTON.
Application led March 7, 1923. Serial No. 623,441.
To all whom z't may concer/n.' Be it known that MERRITT Lotus EMRICH, citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, and does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled I0 in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide a carton in which ribbon or thread-like merchandise, more specifically, tinsel, may
l5 be packed in a manner to permit the merchandise to be seen through openings in the carton.
The invention provides a carton in the nature of a fiat package within which the tinsel, or the like, is supported or suspended on a bail-like member or tab at oneend of vthe package; the front or face of the package having window-like openings, in front of which the tinsel or merchandise is suspended. The invention also contemplates a special supporting edge for the bail-like supporting tab or member.
The various features of novelty will appear from the detailed description ltaken 20 together with the Aaccompanying drawings forming part of the specification, in which:v
Figure 1 is a plan view looking at the face or front of the package or carton;
Fig. 2 is a plan view with the cartonl .15 spread open;
Fig. 3 is a plan view with the carton partly folded, and
Fig. 4 is a back view of the carton in folded position.
rlhe carton is preferably made from .a unitary blank of material and, as shown in the drawings, comprises a middle, elo ated portion 1 which, intermediate its en s, is provided with a lurality of window-like openings 2; the si es of the portion 1 being provided with wing-like members 3' land 4,
which are adapted to overlap over the back of the middle portion 1, as c early shown in Fig. 4, these members being provided with any suitable means for efectmg interlocking engagement or closure of the package.
A simple and efficient type of closure means is obtained by slitting the member 3 as at 3', and provide tabs 4 on the member 4, which are adapted to enter the slits formed in the member 3 as will be readily understood.
The merchandise for which this carton or package is primarily designed is tinsel, and in order to support the same in the carton in such manner as will prevent its moving about or bunching in the package, and also to permit a more effective display ofthe same as viewed through the window-like openings 2 in the front or middle portion l 65 of the package, there is provided a tab 5 at one end or top of the carton having a cutout portion 6, through which a bunch of tinsel may be passed and looped over the supporting edge 7, the length of the tinsel being substantially twice the distance from the supporting edge 7 to the bottom of the most distant window-like openings 2. It will thus be understood that the tinsel is looped at about its middle over the supporting edge 7 and the half portions depend therefrom and in front of the said openings 2.
The supporting edge 7 of the tab 5 is preferably serrated so as to provide a plus0 rality of depressions in which the varlous strands of the vtinsel or other ribbon or thread-like material may be seated, these seats preventing relative lateral or side-wise displacement or bunching of the merchana5 dise suspended on the sup ort. l
A tab 8 at the other en of the portion 1 may also be provided so as to form a closed package. It will be understood that when the package is closed the tabs 5 and 8 are M next to the portion 1, and are overlaid by the side member. 3, which, in its turn, is overlaid and interlocked with the side member 4.
The window-like o enings in front of the package serve not o y to expose or display e5 the contents of the carton or package, vbut f also serve to hold the tinsel against undesirable movement in the package, by reason of the grill work constituted by the windowlike openings dividing the tinsel into groups ica or sections, and forming barriers for these en d of the fia said edge being parallel with sections. the folding e ge of the flap, and side closure 10 What is claimed is: aps for closing the package, the said face A display package having a front face, inhaving openings therein through' which the i Wardly folding end flaps to retain the concontents of the package may be viewed.

closed cut out portion, a serrated edge on that edge of the cutout adjacent the free MERRITT LOUIS EMRICH.
