The present invention relates to containers, and more particularly to a combined container and display device. The container is well adapted for shipping and displaying electric attachment cord sets.

. It is'an object of this invention to provide a simple and compact container in which a cord set may be packed easily and quickly.

In preparing attachment cord sets for merchandising it is customary to wind the cord into an elongated coil or hank with a wiring device such as a plug cap or plug body extending from either end, and it is an object of this invention to provide a container particularly adapted for shipping and displaying a cord set in this form.

Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent as the following description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying my invention having a cord set enclosed therein, Fig. 2 is an elevational view in section of the container shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the the recess 22 could be omitted and the recess 23 made longer than the width of the tab 2| by an amount suflicient to form an opening of the desired size in the side wall. However, in the preferred construction described above the tab 2| tends to reinforce the end of the side wall adjacent the recess 23 and make a stronger and more durable package. In the arrangement shown in the drawing the construction just described is duplicated at the other end of the blank and container.

As illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing a rectangular container of square cross-section having a card set enclosed therein. Referring to Fig. 3 the blank from which the container is formed comprises a single piece of cardboard or similar material scored along spaced parallel lines III to divide the blank into a plurality of side wall panels II to l4. Along one edge of the blank a narrow tab I5 is provided. This tab is adapted to be secured to the inner surface of the lower edge l6 of the panel l4 by suitable adhesive material when the blank is folded to form a container.

Inasmuch as the opposite ends of the container and blank are of identical construction only one end will be described. Extending from the end of the side wall panel H is an end panel II which is scored along the spaced parallel lines l8 and I3 to divide the panel into an end wall portion 20 and an attaching tab 2|. A centrally located recess 22 extends inwardly from the free edge of the attaching tab. An inwardly extending recess 23 is formed in the end of the panel i3 and is arranged to coincide throughout at least a part of its area with the recess 22 formed in the attaching tab 2| when the blank is folded to form a container. With this construction the tab closes the outer end of the recess 23 and forms an article receiving opening in a side wall Thecord set comprises an insulated cord which is formed into a hank by folding it into a plurality of elongated loops 21. The loops are bound together by a continuous wrapping formed by one end of the cord which is wound in adjacent turns 28 about the loops. An attachment plug cap 29 and an attachment plug body 30 are secured to the opposite ends of the cord which project from the container through the recesses 23. This permits the customer to examine freely the wiring devices attached to the ends of the cord set without opening the container. In order to display the cord to better advantage a diamond-shaped opening 3| is formed in panel I 3 of the container.

In shaping the container and packing the cord set, the blank is first folded along the lines i0, and the flap |5 secured to the inside of the lower edge portion of the panel M by suitable adhesive material. The panels H to I4 form the spaced parallel side walls of the body portion of the container as shown in Fig. 1. The cord set is then placed in the box with each end of the insulated cord positioned in one of the inwardly extending recesses 23 of the panel l3. If this is done with the panel I 3 facing downwardly, the weight of the wiring devices 29 and 30 will hold the cord positioned in the recesses 23 while the ends of the container are closed by folding in the flaps 24 and the end wall portions 20. The tabs 2| are passed between the upper edges of the flaps 24 and panel l3 to hold the end walls in their closed position. The recesses 22 in the tabs register with the recesses 23 and close them at their outer ends to form an opening in the of the container. It is of course apparent that container through which the cord may extend.

The weight of the end portions of the cord set extending beyond the confines of the box tend to depress the tabs ll over the upper edges of the flaps II and prevent the end walls from opening. 4

.It is apparent that all parts of a cord set packed in a container constructed in accordance with the present invention may be inspected by the customer without opening the container. At the same time the cord set is sufficiently enclosed to protect the cord from becoming soiled or otherwise damaged. The container is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and permits the cord sets to be packaged with the wiring devices ex- I posed without increasing the time required for packing.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. In combination, a cord set and a container therefor, said container comprising a body portion including a plurality of side walls, end walls extending from the opposite ends of said body portion, a tab extending from a free edge of each of said end walls and positioned adjacent the inner surface of one of said side walls, said tabs each having a recess formed therein and extending inwardly from the outer edge thereof, said one side wall having inwardly extending recesses T formed in the opposite ends thereof, the recesses ,\m said tabs and side wall being arranged to s coincide throughout at least a portion of their areas to form openings in said container, said cord set comprising a length of cord formed into a coil and having a wiring device secured .to each end thereof. sagi coil being positioned in said container with each end of said cord extending through one of said openings to support said wiring devices on the outside of said container. 2. In combination, a cord set and a container therefor, said container comprising a body portion including a plurality of side walls, end walls extending from the opposite ends of said body portion, a tab extending from a free edge of one of said end walls, one of said side walls having an inwardly extending recess formed in one end thereof, said tab cooperating with said one side wall and the recess thei'ein to cover only a portion of said recess and thereby close the open end thereof, said cord set comprising a length of cord having a wiring device secured to each end thereof, said cord being positioned in said container with at least one end of said cord extending through the opening formed by said recess and the. cooperating tab to support said wiring device on the outside of said container.
