' industry, it is desirable to provide attractive packaging for display purposes in order to better sell merchandise. Generally such a display packaging is esthetically pleasing to the eye, and is either composed of non-durable materials or is so cut or shaped as to be impracticable for shipping purposes. Therefore it is necessary to provide an outer piece of packaging or else to transfer the merchandisc from the display package to the shipping package in order to move the merchandise from the point of sale to its ultimate destination.
It is therefore among the principal objects of the present invention to provide a packaging construction which may serve as both a display package and a shipping package.
' A further object of the present invention lies in the provision of a plurality of packaging elements which may be the inter-related and interconnected into a single, sturdy packaging construction.
A feature of the present invention lies in the fact that the elements of the packaging construction may be stamped from a piece of planar sheet material, die-cut and suitably scored for folding purposes.
These objects and features, as well as other incidental ends and advantages, will more fully appear in the progress of this disclosure and be pointed out in the appended claims.

The present invention contemplates a first packaging element die-cut and scored so as to provide a base member with side flaps depending from the sides thereof. Scored adjacent the base member and separated by a side member is a covering member, also having flaps depending from the sides thereof. Further adjacent to the covering member and separated by another side member is a covering flap and corresponding side member enclosure flap. The second packaging element comprises a retaining member having a die-cut opening in the central portion thereof to form a means to support and retain an article of merchandise which may be placed therein. Depending from the sides of the retaining member are flaps. Adjacent the retaining member is a bottom member separated therefrom by a side member, which has tuck flaps oppositely disposed on the sides thereof. There is another side member with corresponding tuck flaps on the other side of the bottom member and a final flap member depending from the side member. The filler elements are formed from a standard fiber board box construction and identical to each other, having an opening defined therethrough to retain the piece of merchandise in position during display and during shipping. The filler elements also provide added strength to the package to prevent crushing.
The package is assembled by folding the bottom memher underneath the retaining member so that they are parallel in relation thereto pulling the flap to the under surface of the retaining member, and tucking in the top flaps of the side members and the flaps depending from the retaining members adjacent the inner surface of the bottom member, after having placed the filler element within the space receptacle formed therein. The flaps depending from the base member of the first package element are then folded back upon themselves and tucked in between the flaps of the retaining member and the inner surface of the bottom member of the second package member element thus providing an interconnection between the first and second package element. The article of merchandise to be displayed is placed in position by pushing down on the support flaps in the retaining member and placing the merchandise within the cavity formed by the openings in the filler elements. To close the package for shipping, the first package element is folded around the second package element, the flaps of the covering member of the first package element being folded in on the top surface of the retaining member for added strength on the exposed portion, and the closure flap being passed over and glued upon the bottom surface of the covering member thus providing a strong, durable shipping package.
In accordance with the invention, the device, generally indicated by the reference character 10, comprises broadly: a first packaging element 12, a second packaging element 14, and filler elements 16.
The first packaging element 12 comprises a base member 18, having a top surface 19 and a bottom surface 20, and an edge 22 and side fold lines 23, 24, 2S and 26, 25a, 26a. Depending from the fold'lines 25a and 26a are side flaps 27 and 33. The side flap 27 includes a top surface 28, a bottom surface 2?, and is bounded by edges 30, 31, and 32.. Similarly the side flap 33 has a top surface 34 and a bottom surface 35, and is bounded by edges 36, 37, and 38.
Opposite the edge 22 on the other side of the base member 18 is a fold line 40 separating the base member from a side member 41. The side member has a top surface 42 and a bottom surface 43, and is bounded by edges 44, 45, and a fold line 46.
Continuing to the left and on the other side of the fold line 46 is a covering member 48 having a top surface 49 3 and a bottom surface 50, and is bounded by aside fold line 51, a side fold line 52, and a fold line 53.
Depending from the covering member 48 and on the other side of the fold line 50, 51 is a fold member 55 having a top surface 56 and a bottom surface 57, and is bounded by edges 58 and '59, and a fold line 60. Further depending from the fold member 55 on the other side of the fold line 60 is a covering flap 62 having a top surface 63 and a bottom surface 64 and is bounded by edges 65, 66, and 67.
Oppositcly disposed to fold member 55 and covering flap 62 and depending from the covering member 58 is a fold member having a top surface 71 and a bottom surface 72 and being defined by edges 73 and 74 and fold line 75. Further depending from the fold member 70 on the other side of the fold line 75 is a covering flap 76 having a top surface 77 and a bottom surface 78, and being bounded by edges 79, 80 and 81.
Further depending from the covering member 48 on the other side of fold line 53 is a side member 83 having a top surface 84 and a bottom surface 85, and being bounded by edges 86 and 87 and fold line 88. Continuing from fold line 88 is a protecting member 90 having a top surface 91 and a bottom surface 92, and being bounded by edges 93 and 94 and fold line 95.
Depending from the other side of the fold line 95 is a side member 97 having a top surface 98 and a bottom surface 99, and being bounded by edges 100 and 101 and fold line 102. Further continuing from the fold line 102 is a closure flap 104 having a top surface 105 and a bottom surface 106, and being bounded by edges 107, 108, and 109.
The second package element 14 comprises a retaining member 111 having a top surface 112 and a bottom surface 113, and being bounded by an edge 114, and fold lines 115, 116, and 117. Located centrally within the retaining member 111 are a series of support flaps 118, 124, 130, and 138. More particularly support flap 118 has a top surface 119 and a bottom surface 120, and is bounded by edges 121, 122, and 123. The support flap 124- has a top surface 125 and a bottom surface 126, and is bounded by edges 127, 128, and 129. The support flap has a top surface 131 and a bottom surface 132, and is bounded by edges 133, 134, 135, 136, and 137. The
support flap 138 has a top surface 139 and a bottom sur-' face 140, and is bounded by edges 141, 142, 143, 144, and 145.
Depending from the retaining member 111 outwardly fold line 111 is a fold member 147 having a top surface 148 and a bottom surface 149, and is bounded by edges 150 and 151 and fold line 152. Depending outwardly of the fold member 147 and on the other side of the fold line 152 is a flap 153 having a top surface 154 and a bottom surface 155, and is bounded by edges 156, 157, and 158.
In a like manner depending from the retaining member 111 on the far side of the fold line 115 is a fold member having a top surface 161 and a bottom surface 162, and is bounded by edges 153 and 154 and the fold line 165. Depending from the fold member 160 on the far side of the fold line 165 is a flap 166 having a top surface 167 and a bottom surface 158, and being bound by edges 169, 170, and 171.
Continuing to the left on the other side of the fold line 116 is a side member 174 having a top surface 175 and a bottom surface 176, and being bound by fold lines 177, 178, and 179. Depending outwardly from the fold line 177 is a tuck flap 180 having a top surface 181 and a bottom surface 182, and being bound by edges 1'83, 184, and 185. On the opposite side of the side member 174 and fold line 179 is a tuck flap 186 having a top surface 187 and a bottom surface 188, and being bound by edges 189, 190, and 191.
Depending from the other side of fold. line 178 is a bottom member 194 having a top surface 195 and a 4 bottom surface 196, and being bound by edges 197 and 198 and fold line 199.
Located adjacent the bottom member 194 on the other side of the fold line 199 is a side member 202 having a top surface 203 and a bottom surface 204, and. being bound by fold line 205, 206, and 207. Depending outwardly from the fold line 205, is a tuck fiap 209 having a top surface 210 and a bottom surface 211, and being bound by edges 212, 213, and 214. On the opposite side of the side member 202 from fold line 207 is a tuck flap 215 having a top surface 216 and a bottom surface 217, and being defined by edges 218, 219, and 220.
Further depending from the side member 202 on the other side of the fold line .206 is a flap member 222 having a top surface 223 and a bottom surface 224 and being defined by edges 225, 226, and 227.
The filler elements 16 are all identical, and their number is determined by the width of the corresponding side members of the second package element 14 since they are to be placed therein in the space formed after the folding operation on the second package element has been completed. More particularly, each filler element 16 has a top surface 232 and a bottom surface 233 and is defined by walls 234, and 235. Centrally located Within the filler element is an opening 236 defined by end walls 237, 238, 239, and 240. When the filler elements are stacked they will form an open cavity comprising the openings created by the openings 236.
Assembly of the packaging construction is effected by commencing with the second package element 14 and folding it inwardly from the position as-shown in FIG- URE 2 so that it will assume the shape shown in FIGURE 5. The flaps 153 and 166 are tucked in so that their top surfaces 154 and 167 are in facing relation to the bottom surface 196 of the bottom member 194. The cavity formed by the inner surfaces 149, 162, 196, 176, and 204, are filled by the filler elements 16, after which the flaps 153 and 156 are tucked into position, with their bottom surfaces 155 and 168 abutting against the bottom surface 231 of the lowermost filler element. It may be added that the particular construction of the box may be varied as long as the basic construction elements are present, and any desired type of finish may be applied to the top surfaces of the box, so as to present a more pleasing aesthetic appearance.
Once the fillers are in place the article of merchandise may be placed over the support flaps 118, 124, 130, and 138 forcing them inwardly into the cavity created by the openings 236 of the filler elements and allowing the article to be positioned therein, as illustrated in FIG- URE 10.
The first packaging element is initially folded to form the configuration shown in FIGURE 4. The flaps 27 and 33 are then tucked into the second packaging element between the flaps 153 and 166 and the bottom member 194, the surface 35 of flap 33 contacting the surface 167 of flap 166,'the surface 29 of flap 27 contacting the surface 154 of flap 153, the surface 34 of flap 33 contacting the surface 196 of bottom member 195, and the surface 28 of the flap 27 contacting the surface 196 of the bottom member 195.
As the first packaging element is wrapped around the second packaging element, the top surface 42 of the side member 41 contacts the top surface 175 of the side member 174. The top surface 49 of the covering member 48 contacts the top surface 112 of the retaining member 111 and maintains the article merchandise in position within the cavities formed by the openings 236 of the filler element 16. In a like manner the top surface 84 of the side member 83 contacts the top surface 203 of the side member 202, thus completely enclosing the second packaging element. The top surface 56 of the member 55 contacts the top surface 148 of member 147, and in a like manner the top surface 71 of the member 70 contacts the top surface 161 of the member 160. The top surface 63 of the flap 62 on the top surface 77 of the member 66 contacts the bottom surface 26 of bottom member 18. The bottom surface 64 of the member 62 and the bottom surface 72 of the member 7 i! contact the bottom surface 92 of the member 90. Finally, the top surface 98 of the side member 97 and the top surface 105 of the closure flap 104 contact the bottom surface 43 of the member 41 and the bottom surface 59 of the member 48. The abutting surfaces 106 and 50 may then be secured together by an adhesive (not shown).
Thus, it is shown that the second package element may serve as a display container for an article of merchandise placed therein and either by itself or when combined with the first packaging element which may be also used for display purposes. The first package element may be also used in the manner above described to completely enclose the second packaging element and when bound thereto, as described, may be used as a shipping package as Well.
I Wish it to be understood that I do not consider the invention limited to the precise details of construction shown and set forth in this specification, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
I claim:
1. A combination display and packaging construction comprising:
(a) a first package element having a base member with an edge, oppositely placed side flaps depending from the base member with fold lines therein to facilitate folding said flaps against said base member, and angularly disposed to the edge; a side member depending from said base member; a covering member depending from the side member opposite the edge, oppositely placed fold member depending from the covering member and angularly disposed to the edge of the base member; oppositely placed covering flaps depending from the fold members and angularly disposed to the edge of the base member; a second side member depending from the covering member on the opposite side of the first side member; at protecting member depending from the second side member and angularly disposed to the edge of the base member; a third side member depending from the protecting member from the second side member and angularly disposed to the base member; a closure flap depending from the third side member and angularly disposed to the base member;
(b) a second package element having a retaining member with an edge; oppositely placed fold members depending from the retaining member and angularly disposed to the edge; oppositely placed flaps depending from the fold members and angularly disposed to the edge; a plurality of support flaps in the retaining member to allow positioning of an object therein; a first side member depending from the retaining member opposite the edge; oppositely placed tuck flaps depending from said side member and angularly disposed to the edge of the retaining member; a bottom member depending from said side member opposite the edge of the retaining member, oppositely disposed tuck flaps depending from a second side member and angularly disposed at the edge of the retaining member; a flap member depending from the side member on the opposite side from the bottom member and opposite the edge of the retaining member; the second packaging element in assembled position assuming box-like configuration;
(c) a plurality of generally rectangular filler elements sized to fit within the cavity of the assembled second package element, the fold members and flaps depending from the retaining element maintaining the filler elements in proper relation within the assembled second package element; the filler elements having openings defined therethrough in dimensional conformity with the support flaps, allowing an object to be placed within the assembled package element and falling within the openings of said filler elements; the first package element being interconnected to the second package element, the side flaps of the base member being interposed between the flaps of the retaining member of the second package element and the bottom member of the second package element.

A COMBINATION DISPLAY AND PACKAGING CONSTRUCTION COMPRISING: (A) A FIRST PACKAGE ELEMENT HAVING A BASE MEMBER WITH AN EDGE, OPPOSITELY PLACED SIDE FLAPS DEPENDING FROM THE BASE MEMBER WITH FOLD LINES THEREIN TO FACILITATE FOLDING SAID FLAPS AGAINST SAID BASE MEMBER, AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE EDGE; A SIDE MEMBER DEPENDING FROM SAID BASE MEMBER: A COVERING MEMBER DEPENDING FROM THE SIDE MEMBER OPPOSITE THE EDGE, OPPOSITELY PLACED FOLD MEMBER DEPENDING FROM THE COVERING MEMBER AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE EDGE OF THE BASE MEMBER; OPPOSITELY PLACED COVERING FLAPS DEPENDING FROM THE FOLD MEMBERS AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE EDGE OF THE BASE MEMBER; A SECOND SIDE MEMBER DEPENDING FROM THE COVERING MEMBER ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE FIRST SIDE MEMBER; A PROTECTING MEMBER DEPENDING FROM THE SECOND SIDE MEMBER AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE EDGE OF THE BASE MEMBER; A THIRD SIDE MEMBER DEPENDING FROM THE PROTECTING MEMBER FROM THE SECOND SIDE MEMBER AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE BASE MEMBER; A CLOSURE FLAPS DEPENDING FROM THE THIRD SIDE MEMBER AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE BASE MEMBER; (B) A SECOND PACKAGE ELEMENT HAVING A RETAINING MEMBER WITH AND EDGE; OPPOSITELY PLACED FOLD MEMBERS DEPENDING FROM THE RETAINING MEMBER AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE EDGE; OPPOSITELY PLACED FLAPS DEPENDING FROM THE FOLD MEMBERS AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE EDGE; A PLURALITY OF SUPPORT FLAPS IN THE RETAINING MEMBER TO ALLOW POSITIONING OF AN OBJECT THEREIN; A FIRST SIDE MEMBER DEPENDING FROM THE RETAINING MEMBER OPPOSITE THE EDGE; OPPOSITELY PLACED TUCK FLAPS DEPENDING FROM SAID SIDE MEMBER AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED TO THE EDGE OF THE RETAINING MEMBER; A BOTTOM MEMBER DEPENDING FROM SAID SIDE MEMBER OPPOSITE THE EDGE OF THE RETAINING MEMBER, OPPOSITELY DISPOSED TUCK FLAPS DEPENDING FROM A SECOND SIDE MEMBER AND ANGULARLY DISPOSED AT THE EDGE OF THE RETAINING MEMBER; A FLAP MEMBER DEPENDING FROM THE SIDE MEMBER ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE FROM THE BOTTOM MEMBER AND OPPOSITE THE EDGE OF THE RETAINING MEMBER; THE SECOND PACKAGING ELEMENT IN ASSEMBLED POSITION ASSUMING BOX-LIKE CONFIGURATION; (C) A PLURALITY OF GENERALLY RECTANGULAR FILLER ELEMENTS SIZED TO FIT WITHIN THE CAVITY OF THE ASSEMBLED SECOND PACKAGE ELEMENT, THE FOLD MEMBERS AND FLAPS DEPENDING FROM THE RETAINING ELEMENT MAINTAINING THE FILLER ELEMENTS IN PROPER RELATION WITHIN THE ASSEMBLED SECOND PACKAGE ELEMENT; THE FILLER ELEMENTS HAVING OPENINGS DEFINED THERETHROUGH IN DIMENSIONAL CONFORMITY WITH THE SUPPORT FLAPS, ALLOWING AN OBJECT TO BE PLACED WITHIN THE ASSEMBLED PACKAGE ELEMENT AND FALLING WITHIN THE OPENINGS OF SAID FILLER ELEMENTS; THE FIRST PACKAGE ELEMENTS BEING INTERCONNECTED TO THE SECOND PACKAGE ELEMENT, THE SIDE FLAPS OF THE BASE MEMBER BEING INTERPOSED BETWEEN THE FLAPS OF THE RETAINING MEMBER OF THE SECOND PACKAGE ELEMENT AND THE BOTTOM MEMBER OF THE SECOND PACKAGE ELEMENT.
