Abstract

A packing for a garment has a rectangular central panel which may carry informative printing, four side-pieces foldable to form the sides of a box-shape and four flaps extending one from each side-piece foldable to lie parallel to the central panel to form the top of a box-shape. One side-piece is narrower than the others and the flap associated with it has an elongate aperture through which a folded garment is hung. This side piece is folded first so that the garment lies inside the box for transportation and storage. For display, the flap with the garment may be hung outside the box, or the other flaps may be opened to expose the garment.

Garments are usually put on the market in a properly packed state, either in boxes, bags or cases. It is clear that the first requirement which the packing must satisfy is the protection of the garment during storage, transport, etc. In this sense, the packing must fulfill the requirements of strength and suitability for despatch. On the other hand, it would be necessary to show the garment to the customer or to a person interested in seeing it, for which purpose it has usually been necessary to extract it from its packing. In the majority of packings, such extraction involves the unfolding of the garment and consequent manipulation thereof and, in many cases, it can be a relatively complicated matter to return the garment to its original position.

With a view to obviating the disadvantages described, a display packing for garments constituting the subject of the invention has been conceived.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A blank for packing a garment consists of a panel from sides of which extend side-pieces whose width determine the height of the packing, and a plurality of flaps extending from the side pieces, these side-pieces and flaps being foldable to form a box-shaped packing, the flaps lying parallel to the panel. One of the flaps has an aperture of a shape and size to receive a garment, this garment being enclosed inside the box on folding the blank, the apertured flap being folded first.

This invention provides also such a packing with a garment in it and passing through the said aperture.

DESCRIPTION OF SPECIFIC EMBODIMENT A display packing for a garment as shown in the said drawings, is a blank consisting of a base panel 1 which may be of fine cardboard or similar material. From the edges of the panel I extend a plurality, in this case four, of sidepieces or side-wall panels 2. The width of three side-wall panels determines the height of the packing when folded, by width there is meant the distance between that edge of the side-wall panel which adjoins the panel 1 and its opposite edge. From the opposite edges of the side-pieces 2 extends a plurality, in this case four, of foldable flaps 3 for closing the packing. The fold lines for forming this blank into a box-shaped are shown in dotted lines in FIG. 1. One of the flaps extends from a side-piece 2 of lesser width than the remaining side-pieces 2 and this flap is formed with an elongate aperture 4 in the form of a closed hole (as here) or of a slit with one open end into which is introduced a garment 5, appropriately folded.

The flaps 3, when folded down parallel to the panel 1, form a box-shaped packing (FIG. 4). With regard to the side-piece of lesser width, this elementpermits the disposing of the garment 5 in its aperture 4 in such manner that the garment is able to occupy a protected position within the box or to be placed in a position totally external of the box, without extracting it from the aperture, for displaying the garment 5. In order to extract the garment, it is merely necessary to withdraw it from the aperture l. Similarly, the introduction of the garment into the aperture involves no difficulty.

The packing described above fulfills two purposes. In the first place, it protects the garment when the latter is concealed in the interior of the box and, in the second place, the same box constitutes a display device when the flap formed .with the aperture f is extracted, the garment being left suspended from the latter to lie outside thebox. If only a brief inspection is desired, it suffices to open the box, whereupon the garment is visible and the garment may easily be repacked after inspection. Also the design of the package is extremely simple, since it is produced from a suitably stamped blank.

The external faces of the box may carry ornamental motifs and indications appropriate to the properties and characteristics of the garment.

Such details as the materials employed for the manufacture of the packing, the shapes and dimensions of the latter and any such accessory details as may arise may clearly be varied as required provided that they do not affect the essential nature of the invention.

I claim:

1. In a package for a flexible article, a blank of foldable sheet material having a panel of polygonal configuration provided with outer side edges, said blank having a plurality of side portions respectively projecting from said side edges of said panel and being foldable with respect thereto along said side edges into positions extending perpendicularly from said panel, said side portions respectively having outer edge regions distant from said panel and said blank having a plurality of flaps respectively extending from said outer edge regions of said side portions and being foldable with respect to said side portions at said outer edge regions thereof into positions extending perpendicularly from said side portions over said panel with said flaps overlapping each other to define with said panel and with said side portions an enclosure for accommodating a flexible article, one of said side portions being substantially narrower than the others and having connected to its outer edge region an inner flap which is adapted to be accommodated freely in the interior of the enclosure between the other flaps and said panel, said inner flap terminating in an end edge distant from said edge region of said one side portion and said inner flap being formed between said end edge thereof and said outer edge region of said one side portion with an opening through which the flexible article is adapted to extend with the flexible article situated on the one hand between said inner flap and said panel and on the other hand between said inner flap and the remaining flaps.

2. The combination of claim 1 and wherein said one side portion of said blank has a width which is approximately equal to one half the width of the remaining side portions of said blank.

3. The combination of claim 2 and wherein said inner flap is formed with said opening substantially midway between said end edge of said inner flap and said outer edge region of said one side portion.

4. The combination of claim 3 and wherein said opening is in the form of an elongated slot which extends substantially parallel to said outer edge region of said one side portion of said blank.

5. The combination of claim 4 and wherein said inner flap has a dimension from said outer edge region of said one side portion to said end edge of said inner flap which is equal to approximately one half the distance from the side of said panel from which said one side portion extends to an opposed side of said panel.

6. The combination of claim 5 and wherein said panel is of a rectangular configuration, having four sides from which four side portions extend, said side portions all being also of a rectangular configuration and said flaps which respectively project from said outer edge regions of said side portions also being of a rectangular configuration.

7. The combination of claim 6 and wherein said panel has a pair of opposed parallel sides which are longer than a remaining pair of opposed parallel sides and perpendicular to said remaining pair of opposed parallel sides, said one side portion extending from one of said remaining pair of opposed parallel sides of said panel.

8. A package comprising a blank and an article accommodated in the package, said blank having a panel of polygonal configuration provided with a plurality of sides and said blank having a plurality of side portions respectively extending from said sides of said panel and being foldable with respect thereto at said sides into positions extending perpendicularly from said panel, said blank having flaps projecting from outer edge regions of said side portions and being foldable with respect of said outer edge regionsinto an overlapping relation extending over said panel and defining with the latter and with said side portions an enclosure in which the article is located, one of said side portions being substantially narrower than the others and having connected to its outer edge region an inner flap which extends freely into the interior of the enclosure and which is formed between the outer edge region of said one side portion and a free end edge of said inner flap distant from said outer edge region of said one side portion with an opening through which the article extends in a folded condition with the part of the flap which extends from said opening to said free end edge thereof being situated between layers of the article and said layers being situated on the one hand between said inner flap and said panel and on the other hand between said inner flap and the remaining flaps.

9. The combination of claim 8 and wherein said inner I flap terminates at a location which is spaced from a side portion distant from said one side portion and said article extending freely beyond said inner flap toward said opposed side portion.

10. The combination of claim 9 and wherein said opening formed in said inner flap is in the form of an elongated slot extending substantially parallel to said one side portion and said opposed side portion and said article being a garment.

Claims

8. A package comprising a blank and an article accommodated in the package, said blank having a panel of polygonal configuration provided with a plurality of sides and said blank having a plurality of side portions respectively extending from said sides of said panel and being foldable with respect thereto at said sides into positions extending perpendicularly from said panel, said blank having flaps projecting from outer edge regions of said side portions and being foldable with respect of said outer edge regions into an overlapping relation extending over said panel and defining with the latter and with said side portions an enclosure in which the article is located, one of said side portions being substantially narrower than the others and having connected to its outer edge region an inner flap which extends freely into the interior of the enclosure and which is formed between the outer edge region of said one side portion and a free end edge of said inner flap distant from said outer edge region of said one side portion with an opening through which the article extends in a folded condition with the part of the flap which extends from said opening to said free end edge thereof being situated between layers of the article and said layers being situated on the one hand between said inner flap and said panel and on the other hand between said inner flap and the remaining flaps.

9. The combination of claim 8 and wherein said inner flap terminates at a location which is spaced from a side portion distant from said one side portion and said article extending freely beyond said inner flap toward said opposed side portion.
