CARTON CONSTRUCTION Roberto. Ward, Cincinnati, oma Application September 26, 1951,-Serial No. amass 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a carton for clothes and the like, and more particularly, relates to a carton having a built-in hanger from which the clothes can be suspended.
An object of this invention is to provide a carton formed from a single sheet and provided with a built-in garment hanger.
A further object of this invention is to provide a carton of this type having a built-in hanger and handle, the handle being formed immediately above the hanger.
The above and other objects and features of the invention will in part be apparent and will in part be obvious from the following detailed description, and the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention, the carton being shown open;
Fig. 2 is a view of the carton in front elevation showing the carton closed;
Fig. 3 is a view of the carton in rear elevation showing the carton closed;
Fig. 4 is a view in section taken along a line IVIV in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view showing the upper portion of a carton constructed in accordance with another embodiment of this invention, the carton being shown unfolded and in flattened position.
In the following deetailed description, and the drawing, like reference characters indicate like parts.
As shown in Fig. 1, the carton includes a rectangular back panel l8, side panels l2 and 3 hinged to opposite sides of back panel l0, and side flaps i and I'S hinged to outer edges of side panels I2 and I3, respectively. Flaps l4 and i6 fold across the front of back panel Ill. A bottom panel I7 is hinged to the lower edge of back panel l0, and a front flap I8 is hinged to the free edge of bottom panel |'l. Flap l8 folds flatwise against side flaps l4 and I6 as shown in Fig. 1 to close the front of the carton.
At the top edge of back panel In is hinged a top panel 2|. The free edge of top panel 2| is hinged to and forms a support for a hanger panel 22. Hanger panel 22 hang downwardly inside the carton, and is provided with an elongated slot 23 by means of which a garment hanger bar 23' is formed. Trousers 24 (Fig. 4) can be inserted through slot 23 and when so inserted the trousers hang downwardly from bar 23 into the space between back panel H1 and the side flaps M and |6. The lower edge of hanger panel 22 is hinged to a return bend flap 2B which extends upwardly and rearwardly behind .the hanger panel. As shown in Fig. 4, return bend flap 26 diverges slightly from hanger panel 22, and the free edge of return bend flap 22 co-operates with the lower edge of slot 23 for supporting the trousers.
In Fig. 5 is shown another form of carton constructed in accordance with this invention. The carton illustrated in Fig. 5 is provided with a back panel 35, side panels 31 and side flaps 38 generally similar in construction to like parts of the carton illustrated in Figs. 1-4 inclusive. The carton of Fig. 5 differs in the construction of hanger panel 39. The hanger panel has a relatively narrow neck at its top but is wider below the neck thereof to accommodate a slot 4| substantially longer than theneck portion of the hanger panel. When the carton of Fig. 5 is in use, hanger panel 39 hangs downwardly inside the carton in the same manner as does the hanger panel of the carton illustrated in Figs. 1-4. However, because of the narrow neck of hanger panel 39, a coat can be hung thereon in addition to a pair of trousers which may be hung on a bar 42 formed by slot 4|.
The cartons of this invention can readily be carried in an upright position either by hand or by means of a pole or the like projecting through the handle openings. The built-in hanger insures proper support of the clothes in the carton.
From the foregoing, it will be clear that the cartons illustrated in this application are subject to modification within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A carton for carrying clothes, said carton comprising a rectangular back panel, side panels hinged to the side edges of said back panel. a front panel hinged to the lower edge of the back panel, said side panels and front panel when folded to overlie the back panel forming with the back panel a hollow container, a handle panel hinged to the upper edge of the back panel and extending from the back panel to the front panel. a hanger panel hinged to the free edge of the handle panel, there being aligned transverse openings in the back and hanger panels adjacent the handle panel, the portion of the hanger panel below the handle openings having an elongated transverse opening therein by which a hanger bar is formed below the handle opening and on which a garment may be hung in the carton, a locking flap attached to the upper edge of the front panel and extending through the handle openings, there being a locking slot in the back panel, and a tongue hinged to the looking flap and engageable in said slot to hold the carton closed.
