Description

H. LE R, JOHNSON PAPER AND MATCH ATTACHMENT FOR TOBACCO AND CIGARETTE CONTAINERS April 8 1924. 1,489,389
Filed March 15. 1922 lNVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 3, 1924.
UNITED STATES HENRY LE ROY JOHNSON, OF SEATTLE, 'WASHINGTON.
PAPER AND'MATCH ATTACHMENT FOR TOBACCO AND CIGARETTE CONTAINERS.
Application filed March 13, 1922.
To all whom it may concern. Y
Be it known that I, IIENRY Ln ROY JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, county of King, and the State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Paper and Match Attachment for Tobacco and Cigarette Containers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
The invention is a meansfor applying a compartment or several compartments for holding matches or cigarette papers to a container for tobacco, cigarettes or cigars.
The object of the invention is to provide a means for embodying compartments containing matches or cigarette papers in containers for tobacco, cigarettes or cigars;
One object of the invention being to provide an attachment with two compartments in it, one for holding matches and the other for holding cigarette papers which may be attached to a can of tobacco by slipping it over the ridge at the bottom of the can and fastening it in place at one end;
Another object of the invention being to provide a small compartment in a cigarette, or cigar case with springs over it for holding matches in it;
Another object of the invention being to provide a small compartment in one end of a package of cigarettes into which matches may be placed;
And a further object of the invention being to embody compartments in or attach compartments to a tobacco container so that matches may be" contained in one compartment and cigarette papers in another.
With these ends in view the invention embodies a receptacle having two compartments, one with a door on it and a slit in its side for holding cigarette paper and the other with an opening in its end having a slidable door over it for holding matches; which may be attached to the end of a container holding tobacco or which may be. made in the end of the container. The invention also embodies the placing of one or two compartments on the side of a package of tobacco or cigarettes or the installing of these compartments in the container; and the invention also embodies the placing of a compartment in a cigarette or cigar case for holding matches.
Other features and advantages of the in- Serial No. 543,181.
vention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation showing the device attached to a can of tobacco. Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the device in the form of a compartment embodied in a cigarette or cigar case.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing package of cigarettes, or 7 thru the device v In the drawings Ihave shown my device in a few of the designs inwhich it may be made. In the design shown in Figure 1 numeral '1 indicates the device which has two sides 2 and 3 each having a groove 4 at its upper edge to fit over the ridge on the bottom of the tobacco can. Between the two sides is a partition 5 and at the lower end of the side 3 is a hinge 6 by which the cover 7 is attached to the lower compartment. In the lower edge of the side 2 is a slot 8 and in the edge of the cover 7 is another slot 9 thru which paper may be drawn from the compartment. The lower edge of the plate 2 is also bent inward as shown in Figure 5 so that the cover may be swung over it which will form a means for holding the cover similar to that used in tobacco cans at the present time. The lower edge 10 of the cover may be made rough or a piece of rough material may be attached to it so that it may be used for scratching matches. At the end of the match compartment a small hole 11 may be'placed with a piece of plate 12 forming a sliding door over it. The door may have a lug 13 projecting thru a slot 14 by which it may be opened or closed and may be held in place by lugs 15 on the bottom of the compartment.
In the design shown in Figure 2 a partition 16 may be placed across the inside of a case in order to form a small compartment in which matches may bekept and two springs 17 may be placed across the top of the compartment to prevent the matches from scattering overthe case.
In the design shown in Figure 3 two partitions similar to false bottoms may be embodied in the packa e and matches may be placed in one compartment formed by the partitions and cigarette papers in the other. It is understood that'when this package is used for cigarettes only one compartment will be required.
The design shown in Figure 4 also shows two compartments which may be attached to the side of a package of tobacco.
It will be understood that changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes 'may be in the use of a different means for opening and closing the hole in the end of the match compartment in the design shown in Figure 1. Another may be in the use of a different means for opening the paper compartment so that paper may be placed in it instead of the use of the door as-shown. And still another may be in the use of one spring instead of two or in the use of more than two springs as shown in the design in Figure 2.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device it may be embodied in a package of tobacco or cigarettes and when it is desired to roll a cigarette a piece of paper may be taken from the paper compartment and when it is desired to light it a match may be taken from the match compartment. It may be seen that it will therefore be unnecessary to carry an individual package of cigarette papers and also an additional package of matches or a match box as is necessary at the present time. The size of the compartment may be regulated so that it will be just sufficient to hold enough matches or papers to utilize the entire package of tobacco or cigarettes. 7
Having thus fully described the invention what I claimis new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the type described embodying two compartments constructed in such a manner that they may be attached to the bottom of a can of tobacco; a small opening in the end of one of the compartments; a flat piece of material forming a door over the opening; lugs for holding the flat piece of material in place; a lug onthe flat piece of material projecting thru a slot in the side of the compartment by which the door may be opened or closed; a door on the other compartment which may be opened when it is desired to fill the compartment with paper; a slot in the side of the compartment thru which the paper may be drawn; and a rough surface on the outside of the device for scratching matches.
