Be it known that we,.BYERs W. KABEL -and PERCY R. DRENNING, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State ignated as the Farlow'two-key draft gear attachments.
This invention has for an object the provision of a strong, durable and easily applied cheek plate capable of effectively fulfilling the requirements of operating conditions, said cheek plate' being formed with a plurality of key-receivin slots adapted to extend through a body we portion, said web portion being gradually tapered from each end of the cheek plate toward the center to provide graduated cross sectional areas throughout the length of the cheek plate.
Another object of the invention consists in forming a cheek late with a body web having a relatively at inner face arranged to engage the outer face of the center sill, and an inclined outer face adapted to form with said inner face a varying cross sectional area throughout the length of the cheek plate, said cross sectional area being relatively large at the central or intermediate portion of the cheek plate and adapted to diminish in net cross sectional area t0- ward each end thereof.

The invention further consists in the comlbiiiation, arrangement and construction of the several parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

The type of Farlow two-key draft gear mechanism illustrated in the drawings, includes the carcoupler 1 which is operatively connected to the draft yoke 2 by a transverse coupler key 3 which latter extends through a slot 4 in the shank of the coupler, thence through the elongated slots 5 provided at the forward ends of the yoke arms, and then through the key receiving slots of our improved cheek plate 6 connected to the center or draft sills 7 of the car underframe. Associated with the coupler and at the rear of the shank thereof, is arranged the follower block 8 having the key 10, said key being 'adapted to pass through elongated slots 11 provided in the arms of the yoke, and projecting into anotheil series of key-receiving slots formed in the cheek plates 6 fitted to the draft sills;
lt will be understood by those skilled in the art that the car coupler 1, upon performing a buiiing operation, causes the follower block 8 and the two keys 3 and 10, respectively, to travel rearwardly into corresponding slots of the cheek plates and of the draft yoke, the latter being prevented from retreating by means of a suitable hackstop or by abutments (not shown), rigidly connected to the cai'. Key-receiving horizontally alined slots 15 and 15 are provided in the cheek plates, the slots 14 being adapted to receivev the roe jecting ends of the coupler key 3 and the ots 15y be arrad to receive the extending ends oligthe key connecting the follower block and yoke. Projecting mwardly from the y web of the cheek plate and surrounding the key slot is an inwardly extending flange 16 adapted to lit within and c i the edges of a slot 17 formed in the forward end of the center sill. The inwardly extending dan 16 is preferably adapted to terminate ush with the inner face of the center sill, as shown. An out wardly projecting flange 18 extends from the outer face of the body web of the cheek plate and, together with the inwardly extending ilange 16, serves to form the slot 15. The respective ends of the slot 15 form stop portions for the respective forward and rear edges of the coupler key 3, as will be understood The key-receiving slot 15 in each cheek plate is provided with an inwardly extendn insane `ing flange 19, said lian e being inclined forwardly, as shown, an adapted to extend inwardly of the draft sills into relative close proximity to the side arms of the yoke. The forward portion of the outer flange 20 is enlarged and reinforced, a fillet 21 being provided for permitting clearance for the cotter in the use of a standard length key.
Diagonally arran ed webs 22 serve to re inforce the forwar portion of the outer flange 2O and the inner rtion of the outer flange 18, a. longitudine y arranged web 23 connecting said flanges at their respective inner ends, a's shown. The outer flange 20 is reinforced at its op osite or rear end by means of diagonal we s 24, and a longitudinally disposed web 25 as shown. A longitudinally arranged web 26 is provided to reinforce the forward end portion of the flange 18. The reinforcing webs arel advantageously positioned to brace the llangesreceiving the buiiing strains and imparting them to the car underframe. The outer flanges surrounding the respective key slots 15 and 15 are relatively thickened at each end, the reinforcing Webs integrally uniting the body web portion of the cheek plate to the flanges, thereby providing for a strong constructionV with an 'advant ous distributionl of the metal in obtaining maximum strength value with a minimum of material employled.

A cheek plate formed of a body web v portion of varying cross sectional area gradually increased from the ends of the cheek plate to an intermediate Apoint and having a lurality of key receiving slots, the inner adljacent portions of said slots intersecting the greatest cross sectional area of the body web.

A cheek plate having a body web portion affording means for connecting it to the center sill or draft sill of a car and havin a plurality of key receiving slots ada te to register with the slots formed in sai car sill, said body web portion being formed of maximum cross sectional area at a point intersecting adjacent portions of said key receiving slots, and aving opposite end portions of gradually diminishing cross sectional area.
