Beit known that I, DONALD SBAnRows', a citizen of'the United States, residing at Rochesteigin the county of Monroev and State of New York, have invented certain .new and useful Iinprovementsin Draft Rigging; Iand I do lhereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which yit appertains4 to make and use the same.
The invention relates to draft rigging for railway cars and more particularly to the means for operatively connecting the parts of a draft rigging to the car underframe.
To this end, the principal object of the invention, generally considered, is to provide a plurality ofcheek plates or stop castings preferably connected tothe outer faces ofv the center or draft sills of a railway car and comprising front stop members` and rear stop members, both sets of stop members' being slotted so.asto receive transversely extendingkeys by` which the loads imposed on the draft mechanism due to bufling and draft movements ofthe coupler are transmitted to the sills in alinement' therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide in the construction stated, 'a mechanism adapted for use under modern service conditions and to so arrange the various stop members that the loads imposed there` on by the transversely extending key or keys do not subject the stop castings to alternate compression and tension loads as is at present the case.
Still another object of the invention is to provide in a three key draft rigging separate stop members for the rear key, the stop members being preferably continued inrcar of the kcy so as to enable the saine to bc connected to the sills by 'rivets common to the bolster center filler. i
To these and other ends, the invention comprises the variouselements and combinations of elements hereinafter set forth.

Referring now to the drawingsin detail, the numeral 1 designates the center or draft sills of a car wahich may be of any desired construction and which are `provided with a plurality of slots'therein, the slots 2 and 3 registering with the slots 4 and 5, respectively, in the front stop members or` cheek plates 6.- In rear of the slot 3 the center or draft sills are p rovided with a slot 7, the said slot 7 being adapted to register with the slots 8 of the rear stop members or cheek plates 9. Each of the'cheek plates is prefer' ably provided with bosses or inwardly projecting Hanges `10, 11 and 12 surrounding the slots 4, 5 and 8, respectively, the said bosses projecting inwardly from the webs These outwardly projecting flanges are desr ignated by the common reference character 14 and the flanges 14, together with the corresponding inwardly projecting flange, give an extended wearing surface for the keys hereinafter described and formed at the limits of the respective slots inthe bearing surfaces for' engaging the side edges of the said keys. ,The outwardly projecting flanges l-il are preferably reinforced on the cheek plaies by means of the longitudinally exlcnffllng ribs 15, 16,17 and. 18 and 'the diagonal rib 19, while on the cheek plate 9 the flange 14 is reinforced 'at its opposite ends by diagonal flanges 20 and a longitudinal flange Q1. It will of course be understood that the cheek, plates are provided with suitable rivet receiving apertures to provide means for connecting the same to the draft sills. The web 13 of the frontcheek plate 6 extendsrearwardly of the slot 5 to provide an adequate riveting area in the rear vof said slot so that hailing forces transmitted hv the' members 9 to tension stresses. It might be pointed out that in car construction where the distance forward of the bolster diaphragm is sufficient, the rearwardly extending portions of the cheek plates 9 are conveniently connected to the bolster center filler by common rivets, thus utilizing these rivets anddisposing the strains` thereon so that the rivets are in double shear under compressive loads.
Cooperating with the cheek plates here-y inbefore described, is a coupler 22, front follower 23, a rear follower 24, and a cushioning mechanism or unit diagrammati-- cally illustratedv by dot and dash lines.` To
Aoperatively connect the coupler to the rear follower 24 there is provided a pair of hori- Zontally disposed link or yoke members 2G, the said members each preferably formed from a bar of forged steel and each being provided with slots 27, 28 and-29 which are adapted to register with the slots 4, 5 and 8 of the cheek plates. The follower blocks i23,and 24 are slotted, as at 30 and 31, for the reception of transversely extending keys 32, the said keys each being adapted to extend through the follower slots, the corresponding slots in the links, and
through the slots in the cheek plates.` The coupler is also slotted to receive the transversely extending, coupler key 33 which in turn extends through lthe cheek plates 4, the link slots 27 and the coupler slot. The links 26 are preferably provided at opposite ends with extended bearing surfaces 34 to prevent wear upon the links or keys under draft.
The operation of the device is evident.
from the foregoing description.
Some of the advantages of the construction hcreiubefore described may be briefiy point-V ed out. It has been found in the ordinary three key construction that despite numerous attempts made to strengthen the continuous cheek pla-tes, breakage has not been avoided and it has been discovered by applieant that the breakage of the cheek plates is due not to faulty material but to fatigue of metal which is caused by eontin'uously subjecting the single cheek plates to tension and compression stresses. Applicant has, by the construction hereinbefore de-A scribed, overcome the defect in the prior cheek plates by providing in rear of each follower key slot an extended web, the said webs being sufiicient in area to accommodate an adequate number of rivets so that the buiting shocks are transmitted to the individual cheek plates as compression strains only. It will be observed that in the particular embodiment of the invention here illustrated, that there is provided on the front'cheek plate in` rear of the front fol-v .which is actually in excess of the compression value bf the sills. Since draft shocks are much less severe than buiiing shocks there is no occasion to provide on the rear cheek plates a like reinforcement forward ofthe forward end of the key slot therein but there is provided in the front cheek plates a similar number of rivets, that is six on eachcheek plate, which will adequately resist draft loads imposed on the front follower key.
It will therefore be evidentthat applicant, by his design of individual cheek plates, has provided a Adraft rigging pocket and stop members suitable for use in connection with modern service conditions and has avoided the defects which have heretofore rendered this type of draft rigging unsuitable for use under modern service conditions,
I claim:
1. In a draft rigging, the combination with a coupler, of slotted front' and rear follower blocks, slotted sills, slotted cheek plates connected to said sills, a plurality of keys adapted to extend respectively through said coupler and each follower block, the ends of said keys being received within the slots in said sills and cheek plates, said cheek plates comprising a forward pair adapted to cooperate with the coupler and front follower keys anda rearward pair adapted to cooperate with said rear follower key, and means for reinforcing cach of said cheek plates in rear of said follower key slots, said means including a web, a plurality of ribs outstanding therefrom` one of said ribs on each cheek plate extending in alinement with the respective slot therein.
2. In a draft rigging, the combination with a coupler, of slotted front and rear follower blocks, slotted sills, slotted cheekv plates connected to said sills, a plurality ot' keys adapted to extend respectively through said coupler and each follower block, the ends of said keys being received within the slots in said sills and cheek plates, said check plates comprising a forward pair adapted to cooperate with the coupler and front fol lower keys and a realward said means including pair adapted to cooperate with said rear follower keypafnd plates in rear of said follower key' slots,
