To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Brass lirinnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltinioi'e in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Rigging; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptioi'i of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 10 it appertains to make and use thesanie.
This invention relates to an. improved construction for connecting draft gears of the: tandem type to railway cars" h aving wooden center sills. V J
One of the principal features of the in vention is to provide-a strong, reliable metallic: draft arni in which metal reinforcing members and draftvjsills are applied to a wooden underframe car so as to form a draftrigging pocket which will accommodate pluralityof cushioning members of standard construction disposed so as to increase the capacity of the gear.
Anotherobject ofthe invention is to pro; vide a. metallic draft arm forwooden Ll11Cll3- frame cars adapted to receive tandem ar ranged springs and followers, said draft arm being desi ned in such a. manner that the several-parts comprising the draft gear already in use onthese wooden types of cars can be employed and additional cushioning means. of comparatively inexpensive" con struction provided whereby the increased draft and bailing strains incident to modern service conditions can be effectively resisted. A further object of. the invention is to provide in combination a draft rigging and metallic construction of draft arm capable of being easily applied to wooden underfraine cars and adapted to receive tandem jarrang'ed springs andfifollowers, said construction involvingreinforcing angle nien1- bers connected to the wooden center sills and ezrtending'well beyond the bolster, depending channels forming draft sills between. which the standard springs of the draft gear can be disposed in adjacent parallel and horizontal arrangement to form a part of the tandem gear, an additioi'ral spring of relatively large size arrai'io ed in tandem relation to the first mentioned part ofthe cushioning mechanism, a plurality of stop members connected to the draft sills with. which the followers of the respective cushioning springs cooperate, a -two-part yoke member rigidly connected to the cowiiier, and a key connected follower the one cess bailing loads of the gear being received by said key and transmitted to the center sills. The invention further consists in the coinbination and arrangement of the, several parts hereinafter to be described.

The yoke is of the vertical type and comprises two parts 16 and 17, respectively. 7 The arms of the portion 17 of the yoke are adaptedto overlie and underlie, respectively, the arms. of the part 16 of said yoke, said overlapped portions. being connected by means of rivets 18 adapted to pass through the thimble block 19 separating the yoke into two parts for cooperation with the tandem arrangementof springs and followers. In practice the yoke parts 16 and 17 may be formed by cutting the present-type of one-piece yoke into the two sections,
thereby permitting the adaptation of the yoke already in use on the car tothe present embodiment of the invention.
The cushioning mechanism comprises tandem arranged springs and followers, a twin g shown by the dot and dash lines in Figures 1 and 2, and a single arrangei'nent of spring 21 being similarly indicated in said figures. The twin springs 20 are positioned in the forward portion of the draft rigging pocket between the draft sills which are offset with relation; to the inner opposed faces of the center sills to provide therelatively wide pocket, as shown. Each of the springs used in the twin arrangement is of a capacity equal to that of the heretofore tandem arrangement in the old construction of wooden underframe and draft rigging pocket. The single spring 21 is preferably of a-relatively larger capacity than the springs 20, thereby materially increasing the total capacity of the cushioning mechanism. The front and rear followers, respectively, of the rear spring 21, are indicated by the numerals 22 and 23, said followers being adapted'to cooperate with stop lugs projecting inwardly from stop members 24: connected to the inner faces of the draft sills. Each stop member 2a is al o provided with an. inwardly projecting stop lug 28, said step lugs 28 providing the rear stop members for therear follower 29. of the front twin springs. The stop lugs 28 are suitably reinforced by longitudinally extending ribs 30 which unite said lugs'with the side wall or body portion of the stop member and the intermediate stop lug 25.
The front follower of the twin springs is indicated by the numeral 31, said follower having passing therethrough a key-32, the respective ends of said key projecting through slotted portions of the draft sills and being adapted to co-act ith stop portions provided on the cheek plates or stop membersBS. The front'follower is formed with vertically disposed and transversely arranged webs providing the front and rear faces thereof, said webs being longitudinally united by. a plurality of vertically disposed webs 31 Thexfollower extends substantially the full width of the draft rigging pocket and is. adapted to contact the rear face of the coupler butt. The cheek plates 33 are'connect-ed to the outer faces of the draft sills and are pr vided with stop portions against which the edges of the hey strike when the cushioning mechanism goes'solid, the excess load incident to the buffing movement being imparted to the underframe through the key which is placed under shear in receiving such excess loads. The followersof the twin spring arrangement are each provided with spring retaining lugs 34. i v The rear end of the yoke is preferably supported uponthei cross plate 35, said plate connected'to the lower faces of the draft channels by means of bolts 36. A top tie member 37 is preferably provided for the reinforcing angle bars 2, said tie member being connected to said bars 3y means of rivets 38. The forward ends of the reinforcing angle bars are also suitably connected by means of a plate 39 arranged adjacent the end sill .5, said plate being of rivets'lO.
The modified form of my invention illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 includes the several parts hereinbefore described with the exception of the key-connected follower cooperating with the front follower of the twin springs 20.
