To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Brnns W. KABEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gear Attachments; and I .do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to draft gear attachments by means of which the shocks delivered in service to draft gear mechanism are communicated to the frame of a railway car. The primary object of the invention is to a'ord draft gear attachments which may be readily manufactured, will efficiently meet the demands of service conditions, and which may be secured to the car framing with a comparatively slight expenditure of labor.
The principal feature of the invention, generally stated, consists in providing a member having a striking plate portion and downwardly extending spaced portions integrally united to said platel portion and adapted to be secured to the center sills or draft sills of a car, and in securing to said sills a plurality of cheek-plates whose inner faces at their forward ends overlap and contact the outer facesof said downwardly extending portions.
A further feature of the invention consists in providing a striking plate which extends between and is adapted to be secured to the center sills or draft sills of a car, and in applying to said sills a plurality of cheek-plates each having a, forward face abuttin the rear face of the striking plate.
Anot er feature of the invention involves the employment of a frame having a striking plate portion, a coupler carrier portion, and spaced side portions integrally uniting said plate and carrier portions and adapted to be secured to the center sills or draft sills of a car, combined with a plurality of cheekplates adapted to be secured to the sills, each of said cheek-plates being formed with a key-receiving slot, and each of said side portions having rearwardly opening recesses respectively registering withY the forward ends of the corresponding slots in the cheek-plates.
lward end of a horizontal There are other features of the yinvention, residing in particular structural details and yin the relations of parts, all as will hereinafter ap ar. y
While the drawin chosen for'the pose of explaining t e invention illustrate a particular form of draft gear with which attachments embodying the invention are especially well suited to be used, it is to be understood thatA the invention, the scope whereof is pointed out in the claims, is not limited in its application to the particular form of draft gear shown.
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a ,construction embodying the invention, showing a. portion of the draft ear with which the attachments are associated and a part of the car to which they are applied.
Figure 2 is a view, partly in plan and partly in horizontal section, on the line E24-2, Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a view, partly in end elevationand partly in vertical section, on the line 3-3, Fig. 1.
Figure 4 1s a view, partly in plan and partly in horizontal section, showing the relation of the draft gear attachments to the car.
Figure 5 is a'detail sectional View on the line 5-`5, Fig. 1.
In the drawings 1 indicates the. spaced center sills or draft sills of a car, and 2 is the car end sill. In the construction shown inthe drawings these sills are of channel form.
The draft appliances illustrated comprise a car coupler 3 connected to the foryoke 4 by a transversely extending key 5 whose outer ends project through slotted cheek-plates 6 secured to the inner sides of the center sills 1. In buling the rear end of the yoke 4 is adapted to bear against the forward face of a backstop or abutment member 7 which is interposed between and secured to the center, sills. Within the yoke are a pair of relatively movable followers 8 and 9, respectively, the former being adapted to vbe forced rearwardly by the coupler 3 in bufling and the latter to be drawn forwardly by the yoke when the coupler is subjected to draft. Between the followers is a suitable cushioning unit, diagrammatically gear and the draft 1,531,658 ICE."
pury lOO 'i stitute means for communicating to the car.
indicated by the diagonal dotted lines 10 in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The cheekplates 6, as is.ta1stoma1'y, conunderframe the pulling "forces to lwhich the draft gear is subjected /i'n service. They are rigidly riveted to the inner sides -of the respective center sills 1 and at their forward ends are overlapped, as indicated at 11, by the neighboring yside portions 12 of a frame 13 which extends between the center sills 1 and is rigidly secured thereto as well as ,to the transverse end sill 2. On their outer faces the side portions 12 of the frame are preferably formed with recesses 14 receiving the forward ends of the cheek-plates` thus allowing the cheekplates 6 and the frame 13 to overlap each other and at the same time to engage the adjacent center sills directly.
The frame member '13 is provided with a striking plate portion 15 from which extend downwardly spaced side portions 12 designed to vengage the inner faces of the sills 1 and to be riveted thereto. The side portions 12 which are preferably casty integral with the striking portion 15 may themselves be integrally united at their lower ends by a coupler carrier member 16 on which the car coupler is slidably supported. The rear face of the striking plate 13 abuts the forward face lof the'end sill .2, the said striking plate being for such purpose provided with lsuitable bosses 17 surrounding the holesy for receiving the rivets securing the plate to the end sill. The striking plate portion of themember 13 is preferably of channel cross section= inclinedwebs 20 which serve ,effectively to transmit to the rear flange 19 the shocks incident to the impact of the coupler 3 against the forward flange 15 of the striking plate.
The forward ends of the cheek-plates G are of notched form on their upper sides to receive portions of the striking plate A13, thus providing on said cheek-plates upvantageously fashioned as follower sto-ps,
the said stops thus having the advantage of being supported by the striking plate portion 15 of the member 13. While the stops for cooperating with the follower 8 of the type of draft gear illustrated may be of any suitable form, it is preferred to construct them as shown in the drawings, the lower stop portion 23 of each cheekplate being spaced from the upper stop portion 21 a distance sutiicient to permlt the draft yoke 4 to operate between them.
Each of the cheek-plates 6 is fashioned with a slot 24 for receiving the key which passes through the shank of the car coup-ler 3 and the arms of the draft yoke 4. The
length of these slots is such as to permit the coupler to have the desired travel in draft and in butling. Between the striking plate and coupler carrier the side portions 12 of the frame 13 are formed with rearwardly opening recesses 25 registering with the forward ends of the slots 24 in the respective cheek-plates. Such a construction not only permits a substantial overlapping of the cheek-plates and the frame 13 without an undueextension of the cheekplates, but it also serves to increase the bearing area for the key 5 at the forward ends of the cheek-plate slots.
Those familiarwith this art will perceive that draft gear attachments constructed in accordance with my invention greatly strengthen and stitl'en the car underframe, and also considerably reduce the di'tliculties of effecting the alinement of rivet holes in the operation of securing attachments to car underframes.
