DRAFT RIGGING.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. WESTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York in the countyv of New York and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Rigging; and I do hereby declare the' following to be a full, clear, and exact description` of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap ertains to make and use the same.

e principal object of my invention, broadly stated, is to strengthen and 1mprove the form of cheek plates now employed in connection with the Ifarlow draft rigging. To this end l': rovide a cheek plate ada ted to be applied to the outer face of a aft or center sill, the said plate having a continuous inwardly proJecting lip or boss which is adapted to extend within a continuous slot in the said sill, the said lip or boss projecting inwardly beyond the inner faceL-of the sill and having its intermediate portions connected so as to reinforce lthe abutment interposed between ,fthe adjacent ends of the slots within said cheek plate.
Another object of the invention is to p rovide a cheek plate for luse in connection with draft or lcenter sills having therein a continuous elongated slot, .the said cheek plates being provided with a plurality of key receiving slots the marginal edges of which are defined by lateral projections, the lateral rejections on one face of .the cheek plate eing adaptedito extend within the slot in the sill beyond'the inner f ace of the latter, the reinforcement extending around the adjacent ends of the slots in the said' cheek plates being extended laterally on both sides of the web of the cheek plate so as to form abroad bearing for the coupler key and the follower key on movements of the draft rigging in opposite directions from -normal.
To these and other ends the invention comprises the various elements and combi. nations of elements as hereinafter set forth.

The numerals 1, 1 designate the center or draft sills of a railway car, and 2 is the combined tie plate and stop lcasting which is adapted to be interposed 'between and rigidly connected to the said sills by means of rivets 3, 3. Adjacent the forward ends of the sills are provided the-cheek plates or castings 4, 4 hereinafter more fully descri ed. The yoke member 5 by whitli the coupler 6 is operatively connected to the cushioning mechanism 7, the latter being diagrammatically illustrated by dot and dash lines 8, is adapted to normally bear at its inner end against the face of the stop casting 2. Intermediate the 'cou--` plei' 6 and the cushioning mechanism 7 there is provided' a slotted follower block 9, and passing throu h slots in the coupler 6 and the followerV lock 9 are the transverselv extending keys 10 and 11, respectively. Normally the key 10 extends through the slots 12 in the yoke 5 and is adapted to bear at its forward edge against the forward edges of the said slots 12.. As will be observed from the drawings, the slots 12 are elongated rearwardly of the key so as to perinit the key and coupler to move rearwardl independently of the yoke when the coupler is moved toward the back sto casting 2 under a buiing blow or load. imilarly the .key 11 is adapted to extend through the elongated slots 13 in the yoke 5 and preferably is in normal position slightly spaced from the forward ends of the said slots 13. The slots 13 are also elongated so as to permit the inward or rearward movement of the follower independent of the yoke V5 on buding movements of the coupler.
-A The cheek web 14 which is preferably perforated at 15 to'receive rivets or .other connecting means 16 which serve to connect the cheek plates to the center or draft sills 1. The sill adjacent the face of each cheek plate is provided with 105 a continuous lip or flange 17 which defines the edges of the slots 18 and 19 in the said cheek plate. In other words, at the adjacent ends of the slots 18 and 19 and on oposite sides of the web there are provided aterally extendingflanges which are connected in line with the upper and lower edges of Said slots by the continuation of the respective flanges 17 and 22 which surround the said slots on opposite sides of the cheekv plate.

In addition to the foregoing I am enabled by this construction to accurately position the check plates directly opposite each other'with a minimum amount of labor.

A cheek plate adapted for connection to a draft sill, said plate comprising a web havin a lurality of horizontally `aligned slots t erem, a plurality of flanges Aprojecting laterally from the opposite faces of said plate, said flanges delinmg the edges of the said slots, and means for connecting said flanges adjacent the adjoining ends of said slots.

In a draft rigging, the combination with a pair ofV draft sills each provided with a longitudinally extending slot therein, of cheek plates connected to the outer faces of saidsills and each provided with a plurality of slots therein, flanges projecting from the opposite faces of each cheek plate, said flanges defining the edges of the said slots and the sill adjacent flange of each cheekplate respectively extending within and through the adjacent' slot in the said sills.

In a draft rigging, the combination with Aa horizontally arranged yoke, of a coupler of the said sil s, and'flanges defining the edges of the cheeklate slots and extending respectively from t e opposite faces thereof, the sill adjacent flanges of each cheek-plate being adapted to extend within and through the slot in the -adjacent sill, ythe intermediate portions of said flanges lying parallel to the adjacent face of the said yoke.

A cheek plate having a body web affording means for securing it to the center sill or draft sill of a car, and having a plurality of key receiving slots and being provided on the inner side of said web with flanges respectively bordering said slots, the projection of one of said Hanges from said Web being of reater extent adjacent the neighboring endgs of the slots.

A cheek plate having a body web affording means for securing it to a center sill or draft sill of a car, and having a key receiving slot adapted to register with a slot in the Web of said sill and being provided on opposite sides of said body Web with iianges bordering the said slot of the cheek plate,.one of said flanges extending through the web of said sill and gradually increasing in Width intermediate the ends thereof.
