This invention relates to combined stop lug and center filler castings.
An object of the invent-ion is to provide a combined back stop and center casting which has striking faces adapted to co-operate with a draft gear having thehusual yoke, and whiclrcasting has an integral per 'lorated center pin section, together with a transverse front wall against which the striking faces ofthe casting are braced, transverse diaphragms connecting the bottom and side walls and. center pin section of the casting, and a longitudinally extend.- ing diaphragm which connects the front and rear walls of the casting, intersects certain of the transverse diaphragms, and is connected to the center pin section, providing a simple construction of great strength and compactness o Other and further objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following. In the drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan View of a combined stop and center casting constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing the same applied to the center sill plates of a railway car, portionsof the usual shock absorbing mechanism being shown in dotted lines. Figure 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the center casting, and showing said casting detached from the center sill plates. Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1. And Figure 4 is a. transversevertical sectional vlew of the mvention corresponding substantially to the line 44 of Figure 2.
As shown in the drawing, the numerals 5-5 represent spaced center sill plates of Y usual construction having angle members 6-6 secured to the lower outer edges there of, and having oppositely arranged angle members 7-7 disposed along the innerlower edges of the center sill plates 5-5. V I
The combined back stop and center filler casting is adapted to be arranged between the center sill plates 5 5 as shown, and said casting includes side walls 8-8 which are oif-set at the lower portions as indicated at 9 to accommodate the verticalflanges of the angle bars 7-7 secured to the innerlower faces of the center sill plates- The casting also includes a bottom wall 19 which sen:
nects the side walls 8-8 and rests upon the horizontally extending flanges of the angle member 7-7. The bottom wall 10 is cut out at its forward portion as indicated at 11 to provide clearance for the end of the draft yoke shown in dotted lines in Figure- 1, the portion of the bottom wall at each side of the cut-out being integrally connected with the oppositely extending inturned flanges 12-12 formed upon the forward ends of the side walls 8-8, said flanges beingarranged to provide stops for the rear end of the shock absorbing mechanism as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. At the opposite end of the casting there is provided a rear wall or diaphragm 16 of somewhat restricted height whichconnects the side walls 8-8, and bottom wall 10 of the casting, as best shown in Figure 2, portions 17-17 of the side walls 8-8 at the rear of the casting extending somewhat beyond the diaphragm or end wall 16, the portions 17, as well as the remaining portions of the side walls 8-8 being provided with a plurality of rivet holes indicated at 18, adapted for the reception of rivets 19, Which-are utilized for securing the casting in position between the center plates.

The diaphragm 26 is interrupted by the center in section but on the o3 osite side of said section is connected integrally therewith as shown at 27 and thence intersects the diaphragm o and merges with the end wall 16, theh'ei-ght of the diaphragm gradually diminishing to correspond to the height of the diaphragm and end wall 16 at their central portions.
By reference to the preceding description taken in connection with the'drawings, the purpose and use of the casting will be clearly understood, the braced flanges at the forward portions of the casting providing abutments for the rear of the shock absorbing mechanism, while the cut out portion 11 permit-s the necessary movement of the yoke. The center pin section is adapted for thereception of the usual center pin, and by the use of the transversely arranged diaphragms connecting the bottom wall, side walls and '1. A combined center'filler and sto ing, comprising side walls, a bottom, and sp ced"endwalls connecting said sides and bottom; spaced stop members braced against said side walls and the adjacent end wall; a plurality of transversely extending diaphragms intermediate said end walls and connecting the side walls and bottom wall or said filler, a center pin section'connected to 7 said bottom wall and connected to said side walls by one of said transverse diaphragins, and centrally disposed longitudinally extending means connecting said end walls with said center section,.and intersecting the remaining diaphragms.

A combined. center filler and stop casting, comprising side walls, ;a bottom, and spaced end walls connecting said sides and bottom; spaced stop members braced against said side walls andthe adjacent end wall; a plurality of transversely extending'd' phragms intermediate said end wa ls and connecting-the side walls and bottom wall of aid filler, a center pin section connected to said bottom wall andconnected to said side walls by one of said transverse diaphragms, and centrally disposed longitudinally extending means connecting :said end walls with said. center section, and intersecting the remaining diaphragins, said center pi section being depressed with reference to the side and an end wall, and said diaphragms being inclined toward said center section.
