Description

March 3l, 1931. D. s. BARRows DRAFT RIGGING Filed May 7. 1928 I :J1/veu oz Donald 5 .BQUUWS FIG.2
Cil
Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DONALD S. BALB/ROWS,` OF ROCHES'IER,` NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE SYMINGTON COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,
A CORPORATION OF MARYLAND DRAFT RIGGING vApplication filed May 7,
This invention relates to railway draft rigging and more particularly to a combined backstop and center filler casting normally adapted for use witha horizontal yoke and supplemental castings for connection thereto to adapt said combined casting for use with a vertical yoke. e
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is to provide a backstop preferably functioning as a bolster *cen- Vterfiller casting and provided with a front face normally adapted to be engaged by a horizontal yoke and rear stop lug portions adapted for connection tosaid front face and the associated sills of the car for adapting said casting foruse with a vertical yoke, said, yoke ,normally extending between the lug portions with the associated follower engaging the front faces of sald lug portions.
Another object of my invention is to provide a backstop normally adapted for use with a horizontal yoke and means for converting said backstop for use with avertical yokesaid means being readilyapplied or removed, as desired. e
A further object of my invention ris to provide stop lugs which are` adapted for connection tothe front face of a Istandard back? .isnormally used with a horizontall yoke for use with a vertical yoke and associated rear follower, said stop lugs providing abutments for said rear follower.
Y Other objects and advantages o f the invention relating to the particular arrange ment and construction of the various parts will become apparent as lthe description proceeds. y
Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention, the scope whereof is defined by the appended claims:
Figure 1 is a partial plan and partial horizontal sectional view onthe line 1-1 of Figure 2, showing one embodiment of my convertible backstop with portions of the as- ,Mciated sills and other parts of the car.I
Figure 2 is a vertical central Vlongitudinal DVtional view ofthe embodiment shown 1n Figure 1n 1928. Serial No. 275,729.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters, a backstop and bolster center filler casting 1 is shown with side walls 2 connected to associated center or draft sills 3 by a plurality of rivets 4. Said backstop preferably, but not necessarily, functions as a bolster center ller casting, the associ-V of the patent to lright #1,458,792, datedv June 12, 1923. For improving the strength of said front wall, the side portions 10 thereof preferably extend diagonally to meet the front portions of the side walls 2 of the casting. The rearwardv portions of the side walls are preferably connected by a rear wall 11, which is desirably alined with the webs of the rear bolster plates 5, as illustrated. Said casting is also desirably formed with a bottom wall 12 and a top wall 13, said walls preferably alining with the corresponding flanges of the center sills 3, which 'in the present embodiment are channel shaped in section with outstanding flanges.
Extending upwardly from the bottom wall 12 of the casting is a hollow cylindrical or thimble portion 14 which provides a king pin aperture 15 and the `bottom bolster cover plate is similarly apertured, as shown in Figure 2. For rigidifying the casting and tying the front'and rear walls together and to the thimble portion 14, a horizontal wallor web 16 is provided whichV preferably extends in the plane of the rcenter line of draft from the front wall9 vto-thevrear wall 11, surrounds the thimble portion 14 and extends between and connects the side walls 2. For further tively narrow reinforcing web, as illustrated most clearly in Figure 2. The side or outer flanges or webs 17 preferably converge slightly toward each other and flare downwardly to connectwith the bottom wall 12 and upwardly to connect with the top wall 13', as illustrated, whereby they form tie webs between the front, rear, top and bottom walls of ,the casting. 5
The casting is further tiedA togetherA transversely by an intermediate web 18 which eX- tends between the side walls and top andbottom walls of the casting and connects said walls together and to the thi'mblepoi'tion l`4 of said casting, an aperture 19 being provided above the thimbl'e portion', 'and that portion of the wall defining the upper part of said aperture being formed with a horizontal flange portion 20. Such castingas been `inst described functions admirably for use with a horizontal yoke as well 'as a bolster center filler casting, as will be understood.
lt is sometimes desirable to use 'a casting identical with the ba'ckstop vcasting heretofore described, but instead of using :a horizontal yoke and Farlow attachments, to use a vertical yoke and rear draft lugs for connecting with the associated rear follower. In the patent to lYright heretofore lreferred topa backstopis there disclosed which is "adapted for use with either a `if'eiti'cal or horizontal yoke but which for that purpose is necessarily reversed in position and involves inte,- gral lug portions which add to the weight :of said casting, withoutperforming -any useful function, except when employed with a verticalyoke. ln accordance with the .present invention, I accomplish the same purpose tendedby the patent referred to without 'add- 7 ing unnecessary weight to the casting and withoutniaking it necessary to reyerse said casting for adapting it for use with a vertical yoke.
ln accordance with `my invention, therefore, I employ `draft lug castings or auriliary members 21 which have side webs 22- normally connected to the associated sills 3 by a plurality of rivets 23, the front edgesof said walls or webs 22 being formed with inwardly extending web portions 24 vwhich function as stop lug portions Iforengagement with the movable element of an associated draft Vgear or rear follower V25, indicated diagrammatically in dot 'and dash lines, assof ciated with the vertical yoke, indicated diagrannnatically Yby dot and dash lilies at 26. A preferred construction of said stop l'lug castings 21 involves approximately horizontal web or flange portions 27eXtending rearwardly from the stop web 24, vone at the upper edge, which 'preferably tapers to 'the rear end of fthe side wall portions '22, and two intermediate the upper and lower edges ofsaid casting, The lower edge of'said casting in the present embodiment is slightly `spaced relation to the sloping upwardly from the front to the rear of the casting and is bordered by a corresponding flange 28, which preferably tapers like the upper flange 27. The upper and adjacent langes or webs 27 and the lower and adjacent flanges 28 and 27, respectively, are connected by the side wall portions 22 vof the casting at their outer edges and the intermediate flanges or webs 27 are connected by inner portions 29 at their inner edges, said inner wall portions preferably extending'from the inner edges of the stop web portions 24 to the front face or web 9 of the associated ba'ckstop casting 1, where they are flanged inwardly or toward each other, as in dicat'ed 'at 30, to provide connecting lug or flange portions, lpreferably fory receiving an attaching rivet 'or other suitable connecting means 31.` The connection between the web portions 29 and 30 is lpreferably rigidi'lie'd by means of a triangular gusset portion 32.
From theforegoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that l have devised a backstop casting which is normally adapted for use with a horizontal yoke but which, Ywithout 'being oversize f'or without necessitating reversal, may be converted for use with `a vertical yoke by the connection to its front face of a pair of stop lug or vertical yoke adapter castings, which are also formed for rigid connection with the associated sillsof a car.
'claimt 1.
