Be it known that I, DONALD S. BAnnows, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lDraft Rigging; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others lo skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
My invention relates to draft rigging back stops such as are commonly used between the center or draft sills of railway cars for the purpose of transmitting buiiing shocks from the draft rigging to the car underframe. y V
The principal feature of the invention, generally considered, is to provide a back stop casting having its front or bufing wall reinforced by a transverse web, the intermediate portion of which is single and the side portions double or bifurcated, and a side wall portion of the casting extending from each of said bifurcated portions and joining with the buffmg wall.
An object of the invention is the provision of a back stop casting having a reinforced front. face or bufling wall and a plurality of separated side wall portions on each side thereof, a portion of the reinforcement for said front wall connecting with each of said side wall portions, whereby the metal vin the casting is distributed for great strength and relatively small weight.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a back stop casting comprising a bufiing wall formed with an intermediate transverse portion and angularly disposed or rearwardly flaring side portions connecting ,with side walls of the casting, said buiring wall being further braced and reinforced by a transverse wall comprising an intermediate, substantially horizontal portion and outwardly flaring oppositely sloping side portions, each of said side portions connecting with a portion of the side walls.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a back stop casting comprising a front or bufling wall and a rear wall, said walls being connected on each side thereof by a plurality of separated side wall portions, said side wall portions being connected and Iextended to the rear of the rear wall for providing increased riveting area,
and reinforcing and connecting` means between said front and rear wall comprising a transverse web provided with connections to all of the side wall portions and a longitudinal web intersecting the transverse web and extending above and below the same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention further consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts as will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings illustrating my invention, the scope whereof is pointed out in the claims;
Figure 1 is a plan view showing an embodiment of my invention connected to adjacentcenter or draft sills.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, my back stop casting, generally designated as 4t, comprises a front or buifing wall 5, a rear wall 6, and side walls 7 and 8 extending therebetween.
lThe side walls 7 and 8 are each preferably formed as vertically spaced portions, each of which is connected vto the draft or center sills 9 and 11 by a substantially horizontal row of rivets 12, that is, the side wall 7 is formed in two parts, anupper part 13 and a lower part 14 spaced therefrom. In the same way, the side wall 8 comprises an upper portion 15 and a lower portion 16 spaced therefrom. All of these side wall portions are connected to each other and to the front and rear wall portions 5 and 6, respectively, by a transversely extending web 17 which serves especially to brace and reinforce the bufiing wall 5 and rigidly conneet all parts ofthe back stop together.
The web 17 is preferably formed with a single Asubstantially horizontal intermediate or central portion 18 and side portions 19, 2l, 22 and 2", preferably bifurcated and flaringoutwardly therefrom, as clearly illustrated in Figure 3. It will be clear from an inspecton of this figure that the web portion 22 directly connects with the side wall portion 15, the web portion 23 with the side wall portion 16, the web portion 19 with the side wall lportion 13, and the web portion'l with the side wall portion :14. Byreasonv .of such-*a construction the casting,V maybe made stronger without increasing the weight thereto the centi'aLor `draftasills 9.-"and11', may be spaced a greater' dist-ance apart, thereby increasing the strength of the connect-ionwith said sills and avoiding the application of perfoi'ations thereto which'are too closely spaced.
By omitting. those portions of the walls between thebifurcated sections of the transverse reinforcing` web 17 and the front and rear wallsof the casting, material is saved which is not necessary and would not efficiently increase the strength of theY casting. This construction also facilitates the manufacture of such a casting. lasithe same may be more readily cored.
