Specification of Letters Patent.

` To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, IRA O. WRIGHT, a citizen o f the United States, residing at Baltimore city and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements `in Draft and Builing Gear for Cars, of which the following is a specification. v
The object of my invention is the provision of adraft and bufling gear in connection with a single integral or composite beam, preferably of metal, such as an I, or or built up beam, located between the car end 'sill and body bolster, which gear shall be strong and durable and ada ted to withstand the strains and shocks o severe service without derangement or resultant'injury to the said beam or'car floor frame.
The invention consists broadly in applying to opposite sides of a draft beam, cheek castings having means for supportingY followers, fproviding a space between the fol or a cushioning device, furnishing means for supporting a movable draw bar and also means for connecting the draw -bar with the rear follower.
It further -consists in certain novelties of construction. and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
4 The-accom anying drawing illustrates an example of tile physical embodiment of the invention constructed and arranged according to the bestinode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principle.

Referring to the figures, the numeral 1 designates, in this instance, a rolled I beam havingtop and bottom flanges and a part of the web cut away on the lines a, b, c, cl, e, the line from d to e' being lower than from .oto d to provide ample space for the insertion and removalof the cushioning means.;
2, the end sill; 3, a removable casting condraw bar; 4, 4, the cheek plates or castings, each plate or casting being formed with a top flange 5, a bottom llange 6, a top vertical web portion 7, an irregular concave-convex web portion 8 of a trough shape, a flange 9 at the front end for attaching the same by rivets to the end sill, a flange 10 at the rear end for securing the sam to the web of the I beam by rivets, an end ening rib 12 uniting the wall 11 and the flanfre 10, vertical strengthening ribs 13 exten ing from'the top and bottom flanges to ythe central line of the casting, front, middle and rear elongated slots 14, 15` and 16, andy suitable strengthening ribs radiating from the slots, as shown; 17, .the draw bar having a horizontal slot; 18, the front follower having a slot; 19, the rear follower having a slot; 20, a cushioning device, in this instance and a spring; 21, the slotted draft links; 22, the front key passed through the slots in thei cheek plates, links and draw bar; V23, the

The several parts and elements are assembled and arranged as shown by the drawing. Obviously, the cheek plates vor castings in connection with the`l beam form a hollow cylinder which possesses great strength with a minimum quant-ity of metal. The cylinder being closed at the-rear end and sides, vthe links, followers and cushioning device are introduced into the cylinder at the front end, and when they areV to be withdrawn the cast# ing constituting the head block and carrier. is removed.
`While I have shown only one example of the physical embodiment of the invention, l-

What I claim is: i
1. A draft and buffing ,gear comprising to opposite sides of the beam and provided with slots for keys, a draw bar, followers, a cushioning device, keys, and links.
2. A draft and bufling gear comprising a single metallic draft beam trough shaped keys secured to opposite sides of the beam, a draw bar, foie lowers, a cushioning device in connection with the followers, keys within the slots in the cheek plates and engaging' the followers,

A draft and buffing gear comprising a single metallic draft beam, cheek pla-tes with slots for keys secured to opposite sides of the beam, a draw bar, followers, a cushioning device in connection with the followers, keys within the slots in the cheek plates and engaging the followers, and means conlower, said means being located between the cheekplates.
