' Application filed December 2, 1957. Serial To all whom it may concern: i
Be itknown that I, CHARLES S. SHALLnN- BERGER, acitizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Underframes for'Cars, of which the following is .a full,- clear, and exactdescription, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, illustrating my improved. underframe arranged below a wooden under- ;frame, only one end of the woodenunderframe being shown; Fig. 2 is a detail view of a portion ofa center sill; Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view taken ap roximately on the line 3+3 of Fig. 1 and ig. 4'is a perspectiv'e view illustrating a modified form of the underframe shown in Fig. 1.
This invention relates to new and useful;
improvements in underframes for cars.
There are many wooden cars at-the present time-which, on account of the high price and scarcity of proper timber, are being abandoned because it is almost impossible to obtain the fproper timber for repairs.
One 0 -the principal objects of'my invention, therefore, m to provide an underframe of maximum strength and minimum weight which can be usedin wooden carconstrue-- tion, said underframe being capable of being These old placed under existing cars. wooden cars are usually equipped with metallic body bolsters, audit is one of the objects of this "invention to, have-these bolsters form part of the metallic u'nderframe. I deem this feature very desirable as it enables old cars to be provided with a complete me tallic underframe at a comparativelysmall cost.-
An underframe constructed in accordance with my present, invention'is composed ofa small number'of parts which are easy to as' "scmble',-- and is adaptcdfor use on various I {channel 16' secured to nectedto theunderframe of a wooden car in such manner that itconstitutes an auxiliary underfra-m'e, l indicatesthe longitudinal sills of the wooden underframe and? the end .sill=thereof. i p v "*Body bolsters. A which form, part Specification of Letters Patent.

Side sills 14, which a1 The Obit it of this const ,a center sill-which is ad use at the present time members "can be made oiiany and the end members form ithe'flanges of the bolster.
formed by the top-and center sills," engage the top and bottom flanges of the bolster A, the end portions of said sills being reduced at theabutments to fit betweensald bolster flanges. Each of the correspondin draft sill, and as these draft and center sil s engage the web of the bolster they practically form continuous center sills which extend from end to end of the car.
. 18 is a cover plate which is riveted to theupper face of the bolster, draft sills and cen-' ter sills. Tie bars 19. are riveted to the un- .derside of the bolster and draft sills.
-20 indicates connecting plates which are riveted to the Webs of the center sills andto" the webs of draft sills, said connectingplates passing through the web of the bolster.
When an underframe constructed as herein .shownand described is applied to awooden car, the wooden sills are provided with suitable holes' to receive bolts which connect them'to the metallic underframe, and said wooden sills, are cut away adjacent the bol- "f's'ter's to receive the cover plates .18 and the overlap ing portions of the metallic side "sills; he metallic end sills are preferabl provided with abutments ZI and 22 which I engage the wooden end'sills. Rods '23 which.
pass through each wooden end sill 2.have their-inner ends bent under-the top flange of the bolster andsecured thereto, the outer ends of s'aid rods being screw-threaded and iprovided with nuts 24.which engage abuti ..ments 21; l j I Referringnogito Fig. 4, which illustrates a modified formof the 'underframe, 11st" described, ,9 indicates short side sills w ich e'xtend-diagonally from a butter block 8 to the l ends of a bod bolster A. This underframe.
40 includes rolle channel center sills lfi 'which I engage the bolster A, and the bottom tie bars 19 are' riveted to the lower flanges. of said .channels'. Otherwise this modified form is.
