As will be noted in the plan View, the brackets 14 are wider at their forward ends than at their rear ends so as to lprovide sufficient clearence for the rivets which conneet the diagonalbraces 12 with the bolster cover plates 13. l
The side framing comprises the usual posts and dia onal braces and said posts are stiflened by c annels 30 which are substantially co-extensive with the said posts, while the tie rods 31'. arelplaced in close proximity to said channels 30 and 'bv reason of their position serve' to hold said vertically disposed channels in positlon.
Thus it will be observed that I provide composite center and side sllls, deepest Yat their middle portions proportioned to carry' a maximum load, at thc same time the parts are so proportioned, and assembled as to provide maximum resistance Y`to 'transverse ending` in service. en.
1. In a car underframe, composite side sills having relatively wide Vtop flanges and relatively narrow bottom flanges,y the said sills super- Van end cover plate connected with the center and side sills.
2. In a car `under-frame, composite side sills having relatively wide top fianges and relatively narrow bottom flanges, the said' flanges being of uniform width throughout their lengthV and adapted to project inwardly to embrace. the ends of the cross bearers, the web connecting the f ad flanges incl-eas ing in depth between the bolsters, in combination with center sill coistruction increasing in depth between the bolsters and with end cover plates connected with the said center sills and said side sills.
3. In a car underframe, com yosite side sills having relatively wide top anges and relatively narrow/bottom flanges the said fianges being of uniform width throughout their length and ada ted to project inwardly to embrace the en s of the cross bearers, the web connecting the said flanges increasing in depth between the bolsters, in combination with center sill construction increasing in depth between the holsters, cross members uniting the center and side sills and comprising diaphragms increasing in depth from the side sill construction to the center sills and with `end cover plates connected l with the center, and side sills.

In a car underframe, a composite side sill having relatively wide top flanges and relatively narrow bottom flanges, the said flanges being of'uniform width throughout their length and adapted to project inwardly to embrace the ends of the cross bearers, the web connectingithe said flanges increasing in depth between the bolstcrs, in combination with center sill construction having outwardly extending flanges,the web connecting the said flanges increasing in depth between the holsters, cross bearers adapted to be embraced between the inwardly projecting flanges of the side sills and the out.- wardly extending flanges oi" the center sill construction, the web of said cross' bearers increasing' in depth from thev side sills to the center sill construction, end .frame cover plates connected with {luf-center sill'con.
struction and the side sills and diagonal braces extending from the juncture of' the side sills and end cover plate to the juncture of the holsters and the center sill consten@ tion.
