HUGO TUEGKMANTEL, or invrne'ron, new messy, Assrsnoa TO THE :a. NEUMANN HARDWARE 00., A CORPORATION OF NEW Jnnsnv.
BAG FRAME FASTENEB.
Application filed April 21, 1922. Serial no. 555,922.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, HUGO TUECKMANTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful. Improvementsin BagFrame Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to charactersof referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v This invention relates, generally, to improvements in bag-frame fastener; and the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed safety latch or lock for use with the hinged frame-sectionsof any of the well-known bag frames employed with various kinds of travelling bags, suit-cases, and the like The present inventi.on,,therefore, has for its principal objects to provide a simply made and cheaply constructed bag-frame fastener in which the usual chambered shell of box is dispensed with, and in which inlieu thereof, a main plate provided with means for its attachment to the upper and outer face of one of the frame-sections is employed, said plate being provided with upward projecting marginal flanges, between which is pivotally disposed or hinged a manipulating plate or lever, from which extends in a downward direction from said latter, plate or lever, and through an opening in the main plate, a frame-section engaging lock-post of the general character hereinaftermore fully set forth. I
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from; the follow in g detailed description of the present inven tion.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel bag-frame fastener hereinafter set forth; and, the said, in: vention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully set forth in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims, which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The inventionis fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fragmentary portion of a bag-frame, provided with a bag-frame fastener showingone embodiment of the principles of the present invention, with the partsof the, fastener illus trated in their closed and frameengagingre lations. j
Figure, 2 a side elevation of the bagframe fastener detached from the frame-section, showing the pivoted boltcarrying plate vandits bolt orlock-p0st,.in-their raised positions; and Figures 3: and t elevations of therespective ends of the bag-frame fastener, the various parts being represented in their closed relations. a
Figure 5 is an end View of the fastener, looking in the direction of the arrow :0 in said Figure 2; Figure 6 is a horizontal sectional representation, said section being taken on line i6-6 in saidFigure 2; and Figure 7 isa longitudinal vertical section of the said fastener. y
Figure 8 is a similar vertical representa tion of a slightly modified construction of bag-frame fastener.
; Similar characters of reference are em: ployed in the said above described views, to indicate corresponding. parts,
Referring now to the said figures of the drawings, thereference-character 1 indicates the main member ofv the outer frame-section ofa. bag-frame, upon theupper and outer face of which is adapted to besecured, in the desiredapositions, a pair of bag-frame fastenersof the general character andconstruction shown in the several figures of the drawings herewith; accompanying, and :described in the following specification and the reference-character 2 I indicatesthe; other or inner frame-section of the bag-frame, saidv frame sections 1 andQbeingsuitably connected in any usual hinge-like manner, but not here shown,v a
Each bag-frame fastener consists, essentially, of a suitably formed main base-plate 3 provided at its respective marginal ends with'downwardly projecting fastening lugs or cars t for securing said plate upon the outer and upper face of the frame-section 1, substantially as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Of course it will be evident that other means may be employed for securing the said base-plate 3 in its position upon the said frame-section 1.
Projecting in upward directions from both of the longitudinally extending marginal edges of the said base-plate 3 are longitudinally extending marginal flanges, as 5, which flanges, if desired, may be shorter in length than the length of the base-plate, as shown in the accompanying drawings. This arrangement of the said members is, however, not essential.
Between the said flanges 5,. the said baseplate 3 is made with a suitably shaped opening 6, the purpose of which will be presently described.
At or near the one end of each flange 5 is a pin 7 which extends laterally across the open space between said flanges, and has its ends suitably secured to the respective flanges, as shown and as will be clearly understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. Pivotally mounted upon said pin 7, by means of pivot members 8 in a hinge-like manner is a manipulating plate or lever 9 provided with a downwardly projecting lock-post or bolt 10 which extends through and is movably disposed in the previously mentioned opening 6 in the main base-plate 3, and is provided at its free end with a suitably shaped stop-lug or projection, as 11. The said manipulating plate or lever 9 is of such width and length corresponding to the space between the two flanges 5, so that when in its closed position, shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4:, its upper and outer face will be flush with upper edges of the said flanges 5, the parts thereby presenting in appearance, a shell or box-like structure usual in the general bag-frame fasteners now in ordinary use. The said manipulating plate or lever 9 is also usually of such length, that its free end-portion 12 will extend beyond the ends of the said flanges 5, as indicated in Figure 1, said end-portion 12 thereby providing a suitable fingerpiece for the manipulation of said bolt-carrying plate or lever, as will be evident. At its pivoted or hinged end-portion, the said plate or lever 9 is made with a downwardly projecting spring-engaging lug or finger, as 13, in active engagement with the part 15 of a suitably formed bifurcated spring-member 14, suitably s'ecured ina manner as clearly illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings, upon the said base-plate 3, by means of rivets 15', or other fastening means. The arrangement of the said lug or finger 13 in slidable engagement with the part 15 of the springmember 14 is such, that the said manipulating plate or lever 9, and its looking or retaining bolt or post 10, when raised, will be positively held in such raised position, and when lowered will close with a'perceptible snap, as will be clearly evident.
In lieu of providing a separate springmember 14, as hereinabove described, the main base-plate 3 of the fastener, as shown in Figure 8 of the drawings, may be formed with a spring-member or tongue 16; which is struck up out of said plate, and is in tegrally connected therewith, as at 17 the previously mentioned lug or finger 13 being in slidable engagement with the free endportion 18 of said spring-member or tongue 16, as indicated in said Figure 8. In this construction, the said spring-member or tongue 16 is also provided with an elongated opening or slot 19 into and through which the lock-post or bolt 10 of the plate or lever 9 extends and is movably disposed therein.
It will be fully understood that bag-frame fasteners made according to the principles of the present invention may be secured to and employed with the hinged bag-frame sections of any of the usual bag-frames now in use.
Of course I am aware, that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended to the said speci fication. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
