COMBINATION HINGE AND LATCH Filed Dec. 30, 1935 Samuel/(roll and 1 Na/fian [K1 0i] INVENTORS 7715/)? ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 22, 1936 PATENT -OFFICE COMBINATION HINGE AND LATCH Nathan J. Krolland Samuel Kroll, Chicago, Ill.
Application December 30, 1935, Serial No. 56,671
5 Claims.
This invention relates 'to a combination hinge and latch.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved combination hinge and latch which is relatively simple and inexpensive in construction and eificient in use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel combination hinge and latch for hingedly interconnecting, and releasably latching together, the collapsible. or movable parts or sections of a collapsible or folding piece of furniture such, for example, as a collapsible childs play cr-ib.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel combination hinge and latch by means of which two movable parts or members may be hingedly connected, and at the same time, releasably latched together.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred form of the new combination hinge and latch as used in conjunction with a collapsible or folding piece of furniture, which is shown as having the form of a childs play crib;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view showin the childs play crib, with which the new hingelatch is associated, in collapsed or folded position;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view on line 3 3 in Fig. 1, illustrating the operation of unlatching the new device;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the new device showing the same in latched position;
Fig. 5 is a top plan view showing the new device in unlatched position; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a side elevational view similar to Fig. 3, and is taken in the direction of line of Fig. 4.
A preferred form of the present invention is shown in the drawing, is therein generally indicated at I6, and is shown as associated with a collapsible or folding piece of furniture which is shown' having the form of a childs play crib II, which includes a wall l2 which includes two collapslble parts or sections l3.
The new combination hinge-latch comprises two hinge sections or plates I4 and I5 which are adapted to .be attached to the movable parts or sections l3 of the wall |2 by means of fastening elements which are shown as having the form of screws |6, or the like, these two hinge sections or plates I4 and I5 being hingedly or pivotally connected together, as at H.
Formed in the hinge plate or section I5 is an upward extension in the form of a latch keeper l8 and mounted on the hinge plate or section I4 is an upright pin or post l9. Arranged upon this upright pin I9 is a coil spring 20 and sli'dably mounted upon the pin or post I9 is a latch member or bolt 2|, this latch member or bolt 2| having an offset portion 22 which provides a handle. This latch bolt or handle 2| has an end portion 23 in which is formed a notch 28 and this notched portion 28 of the latchbolt 2| is latchingly engageable with the keeper l8, it being noted that the notched end portion 23-28 of the latch member 2| is normally urged, by the spring ,20, into efiective position, (downwardly, Fig. 7, upwardly,
Fig. 3), into the position in which it is shown in full lines, Fig. 3, and in which position the body of the latch member 2| is disposed parallel to and against the hinge plates or sections l4 and I5.
Formed on the hinge plate or section l4 are two spaced and upwardly extending guides 24 and 25 and the latch bolt 2| projects between these guides 24 and 25 and is prevented by the same from lateral movement, that is, from turning about its pivot Formed on the latch keeper I8 is a beveled cam edge 21 and engageable with this beveled cam edge 21 of the keeper I8 is an upwardly angled end portion 26 of the latch bolt 2|.
It will be noted'by reference to Figs. 3 and 7 that the end portion 29 of the handle 22 of the latch bolt 2| is normally disposed in spaced relationship (as in full lines, Fig. 3), which respect to the hinge plate or section I4.
Operation In the use of the new combination hinge-latch the same may be mounted in effective position, that is, in position of use, by attaching the hinge or mounting plates and Hi to the collapsible or folding sections l3 of the article l2, in the manner shown, that is, by attaching the mounting or hinge plate M to one of the sections l3 of the crib l2, and attaching the mounting or hinge plate |5 to the other section l3 of the play crib l2.
When the new hinge-latch is thus mounted in position of use it will act both as a hinge for hingedly connecting the sections 3 of the play crib l2 together and will also act as a latch for releasably latching the hinge sections l3 together, it being noted that the latch bolt 23 normally engages the keeper l8 and prevents the sections l3 of the article l2 from being moved into extended position relative to each other.
The latch bolt 2| may be moved out of latching engagement with the keeper I8 by manually grasping the handle portion 22 of the latch bolt 2| and pressing downwardly upon the same, (as seen in Fig. 7), thereby pivoting the latter bolt 2|, against the action of the spring 20, (from full to dotted line position, (Fig. 3), thereby moving the end portion of the handle 22 into engagement with the hinge plate It, whereupon the parts l3 and the hinge sections or plates Hi and i5 may be moved, relative to each other, about the pivot l7, it being noted that when the end portion 23 of the latch bolt 2| is pivoted from latched into unlatched position (from full to dotted line position, Fig. 3), the notched end portion 23-28 of the latch bolt 2| may be moved past the latch keeper l8, and the parts l3 and hinge plates it and I5 thus moved into the position in which they are shown in Fig. 5, that is, into open or extended position.
When the collapsible parts or sections l3 are moved back into closed position, relative to each other, (as in Fig. 4), the upwardly angled end portion 26 of the latch bolt 2| will engage the beveled cam edge or striker portion 21 of the latch keeper l8, whereupon the said angled end portion 26 of the latch bolt 2| will ride up the cam edge 2'! of the latch keeper |8, against the action of the spring 20, thereby pivoting the latch bolt 2| from full to dotted line position, Fig, 3, the latch bolt 2| thus moving into efiective or latched position, as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 7, it being noted that when the latch bolt 2| is thus positioned it is prevented from lateral movement, relative to the keeper l8, by the guide members 24 and 25.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the present invention provides a new article of manufacture which possesses a double utility or purpose, namely, it acts both as a hinge and as a latch, for hingedly interconnecting and 'releasably latching together two separable or movable parts such as the collapsible rails or sections of a wall of a childs play crib, or similar article, as shown.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
. Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is t 1. A combination hinge-latch, comprising two hinge plates or sections, means for hingedly or pivotally connecting the said hinge plates or sections together, means for releasably latching the said hinge plates or sections in closed position relative to each other, said second-named means including a latch keeper on one of said hinge plates, a pin or post upon the other of said plates, a latch member or bolt pivotally mounted between its ends upon said pin or post for vertical rocking movement relative thereto, and a. spring yieldably urging said latch bolts against the second-named plate, said latch bolt having a handle portion for moving the said first-named portion thereof, against the action of said spring, out of latching engagement with said keeper.
2. A combination hinge latch comprising two hinge plates, means hingedly connecting said plates, a latch keeper on one of said plates, a latch member on the other said plate in the form of a substantially flat elongated arm having an apertured portion intermediate its extremities and having a handle portion. formed in one of said extremities, the said other plate having a pair of extensions flanking the said latch member and aheaded pin extended through the said apertured part of said latch member and having a spring thereon with its end portions bearing against the said headed portion and an upper surface of said latch member.
3. A combination hinge latch comprising first and second" hinge plates, means hingedly connecting said plates, a latch keeper extended from said first plate, a pair of spaced lugs extended from said second plate, a headed pivot pin extended from said second plate, and a latch member mounted on said pivot pin for rocking movement in a direction normal to the said plates and being positioned between the said lugs.
4. A combination hinge latch comprising a pair of plates hingedly connected, one of said plates having an extended latch lug and the other of said plates having a pair of spaced movement limiting lugs and a pivot pin extended therefrom with an elongated latch bar mounted on said pivot pin for movement away from said plate and having a notched part for engagement with said latch lug on the other and first said plate and a part resting between the said spaced lugs, the said pivot pin having yieldable means normally urging said latch member against the said second plate.
5. A combination hinge latch comprising a pair of hingedly joined plates, a first plate of said pair having a latch keeper extended therefrom and a second plate of said pair having latch means mounted for rocking movement thereon in a direction substantially vertical thereto, means limiting the movement of said latching means in a plane parallel to said plate, and means yieldingly urging said latching means against said second plate in a vertical direction.
