UNIVERSAL SNAP- Application filed March 9 T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER D. SCULLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Universal Snap-Fastener Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buttonclasps, and the main object is to provide a device which may be readily used as a cuff button or for automobile side curtains, or analogous purposes, the same being designed to releasably interloclrboth members.
Another object is to provide a button clasp composed of two members which are identically similar to each other, each having means thereon for interlocking both members to each other in a releasable manner by urging both members toward each other.
These and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevational view taken substantially centrally thru a pair of interlocked cuff buttons.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of one of the button members, showing the method of giving resiliency to the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevational view similar to Figure l, taken thru a modified form of button clasp.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of one of the modied type of button members.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the outer keeper flange which is separated from the vmain body iange 11 by a stem 12, said stem being adapted to be inserted into the button hole of a Gulf or other article. Flange 11 is annular and of relatively large diameter and has an annular cup shaped member 13 secured thereto, Whose wall 14 is curved semicircularly. The bottom of the cup member is preferably permanently secured to said flange 11. The wall 14 of the cup is provided with a plurality of spaced apart slits 15 which render said wall particularly resilient. A second cup member is permanently iixed in the larger cup by securing the bottom 16 of the former to the bottom of member 13. The wall 17 of this cup is annular and curves divergently outward, the

largest diameter being at the upper edge. The channel 18 between the inner and outer cup members has a pair of studs 19 and 2O projecting upwardly from the bottom of the larger cup member, to which they are secured, and are surinounted by spherical. heads 21. Said studs are preferably aligned diametrically opposite each other, the heads 21 thereof projecting somewhat above the upper edges of the cup members. he smaller cup member is also provided with a plurality of slits 22, the purpose therefore being the same as mentioned for the larger cup. l
The modified type of clasp button shown in Figures .3 and 4 is of similar design to the preferred form, but the outer cups are shaped somewhat differently. The outer cup 23 is permanently mounted on an annular flat plate 24 which has a plurality of elongated holes 25 therein, which provide means for securing the device to an article of apparel or the like. Clips or stitches may pass thru said holes for the purpose described. The encircling wall of the larger cup is tapered outwardly, the upper edge 26 being curved inwardly to form a hooked edge. Said outer cup is provided with a plurality of radial slits 27 for the purpose of resiliency. A sleeve 28 is mounted within the cup, its upper edge being divergently curved toward the hooked edge 26 of they outer cup member. Said sleeve also has its wall slitted at various places, as shown. A pair of studs 29 having knob heads 30 are connected bya cross bar 31 and rise vertically from the channel 32 formed between the outer cup and sleeve members, the bar of the studs being permanently fixed to the bottom of thel sleeve.
The device isy used in pairs only, that is,V
it takes two members to provide a complete clasp button. When two members are to be interlocked, the same are brought together, so that the spherical heads 2l of one member face the channel 18 of the opposite member. Both members are then urged toward each other. As the heads bear down upon the cup members, the wall segments thereof will give way, spreading in opposite directions and permitting said heads to enter into the channel 18 beneath the curved edges of the cup, wherein they are releasably retained in interlocked relation. In this manner a double locking is accomplished as each button member carries a pair of stems, the heads of which engage the Cup edges of the opposite member. The button members when interloeked may be readily separated by pulling the same away from each other.
Another 'feature which is apparent is that my locking members provide a much greater Wearing sur-race than those now in common use, and they "iterloeh when brought together in any position on their peripheries. thus eliminating the necessity er rotating one with respect le the other. as is necessary in many pesent types, to align the opposite interlocking parts.
l olaimz l. fr separable fr. Vmier eenrprising a pair ro members, an annular eup on eaeh member having a plurality el" slits therein, and means en said clips Yfor interlorhing a, pair oi' cups.
2. A separable fastener comprising a pair oie, lianged nnmbers an anulzlar @Upon each 01" said men'ibers, the Walls of said oups being inwardly Curved at their upper edges) and means on each n'ieinlrer 'for releasably interlocking the lips o? the opposite cup members.
3. A separable fastener eomprisinga pair of flanged members, anannular @up on each member, a divergently tapered Wall on said cup, the upper edge of said Wall being wreef/ea curved inwardly to form a hook, studs rising `from the bottom of the cup, and means on the ends of said studs for engaging the curved wall of the opposite member.
4;. A separable fastener Comprising a pair of annular eup members, the upper edges of said eups being inwardly curved, the Walls of saideups having slits therein, stems rising 'from each @up7 and means ferinterlocking said enp members Comprising spherical heads on the stems projecting above the onp members adapted to engage the inwardly-e;:rred edge elf the opposite member. p
5. A. separable fastener eon'xprising a pair ol' annular cupped nfiembersy walls thereon, the upper edges o'l1 said walls being in- Wardly eurvech a smaller cup member in eaeh nist-named `enp having Walls whose upper edges are turned outwardly the Walls oli' all @up members being slitted to form resilient segments, stems rising vfrom the bottom of the .larger @up members having heads thereorn.said'heads of one member bey ing adapted to be releasably retained between the larger and smaller Cup members of the opposite members. i
ln testimony whereof I, allix my signature.
