To g/ZZ '1U/20m z5 may concern.' Y
Be it known that I, Crnirnns FREDERICK GAUNT, of the city of Birmingham, England. a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in the Manufacture of Buttons, Badges, or the like; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof: I This invention relates to manufacture of buttons, badges or the like and is primarily intended to providemeans whereb-y buttons or badgesl may be made by hand without the useof machinery or, sewing, thus providing for the makingby the users of buttons of any required shape or size and covered with any required material.
According to the presentl invention for the manufacture of,bu ttons, badges or the like I provide a disc, plate or foundation member of suitable thin sheet material and at its edges or periphery this member is` provided with as number of projections which can be bent to engage and retain the edge ofthe covering material after which they may be bent backwardly so as to lie at the back of the button, badge or the like so as to be out of sight.
It is preferred to provide the disc plate or equivalent member with a` central raised portion of the form required for the face of the button and to provide a stiifening member of Vsuitable form fitting into the under side of this raised portion.v
This stiffeiiing member is preferably provided with a pin or an eye or otherwise formed to provide for the attachment of the button or badge to the garment by the pin or by sewing and the bent back hook like rportions at the periphery of the foundation may engage over its edges.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention, reference must be had to the ac# companying drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein: y
Figure l is a fragmentary plan view of the foundation member of the button;
Figure `2 is a similar view of the button when the projections of the foundation member have been folded inwardly to grip the covering material;
Figure 3 is'a sectional elevation of the member shown in Figure i;
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation of the butto-n as shown in Figure 2;

Figure 5 is a sectional view' showing the f button in the next stage of formatio'iig,"v
Figure 6 is'a sectional view showing the button in the next stage of formation; and
Figure 7 is'-a part sectional -viewshowing the final form of the button. ,Y Y
in the construction illustrated upon the accompanying drawings the base member l is formed of thin sheet metal andv is circular in shape, being provided with a raised central dome like portion 2. At its yperiphery it is provided witha large number of'substantially radial projections y3 formed by slotting out the material between' them; The outer ends of these projections 3 'are forked and the points 8 bent inwardly so that iny use 'good grip of the covering material. is ensured. y
The base member is provided with a stili'- ening member 4 of such a shape as to lit closely into the inside of the dome shaped portion 2. y in each of the two members l and 4 to take a metal disc 6 to which an eye member "7 is adapted to be secured, the shanks of the eye member passing through suitable holes in the members 1 and 4. This eye member 7 is used in attaching the button in its required position on a garment.
When it is required to form a button covered with any desired fabric material, a piece of the said material is cut to the requiredshape and laid on the base i as shown in Figures l and 3. The claw like ends 8 of the projections 3 are then bent inwardly downwardly into engagement with the material 9 and the button now presents the appearance shown in Figures '2 and 4. The periphery thereof is now bent downwardly about the periphery of the stit'fening inember 4 so as to get the arrangement shown in Figure 5. The dowi-iwardly projecting rim 10 is then bent inwardly through the position shown inFigure 6 until it is finally in contact with the inner surface of the member 4 as shown in Figure 7. e
In a modified construction no ,stiifening member is used, the base member being shaped so as to leave a central recess at the back, and when the covering material has been gripped by the projections the periphery is bent downwardly and inwardly about a disc like member placed. in the' aforementioned recess and so retains this disc like member in position. The disc like member is provided with an eye er pin or A central depression 5 is formedl ion other suitable means by which the button may be secured to a garment.
It Will be understood that this invention is applicable to any shapes and sizes of buttons, badges or the like either for use or adornment, and provides a simple means whereby the users may make their own buttons or badges, using if required: in the case of buttons as covering material therefor, the same material of Which the garment is made. n
Vhat I claim is as follows l. The method of manufacturing buttons consisting in forming a sheet metal disc with a plurality of spaced radial projections on its periphery mounting the disc upon a stiffening member of dome form and making it conform thereto mounting a piece of fabric upon the disc, turning the projections up and back upon the fabric and folding the edge thus formed and which protrudes beyond the stiffener beneath the latter.
2. A button consisting of a sheet metal stitfening member of dome form, a relatively liexible base member mounted upon the stiffening member and kof larger dimensions than the latter, said base member having a plurality of radial projections bent up and back upon itself and adapted to retain a piece of fabric thereon, the edge thus formed With the portion of the fabric gripped thereby being bent beneath and upwardly Within the stiffening member presenting a fabric top having an unbroken surface.
3. A button consisting of a stiffening member of concave-convex cross section, a relatively flexible base member mounted upon the convex side of the stiffening member and conforming thereto, said members having a central depression; means for securing the members together and for attaching the button to an article, said means consisting of a disc mounted in the depression in said members and an eye located beneath the members and passed therethrough and connected to the disc, said base member having a plurality of spaced radial projections on its periphery turned up and back upon itself and adapted to retain a piece of fabric, and the peripheral edge of the base member with the portion of the fabric gripped thereby being bent beneath the stiifener member.
In testimony whereof l have signed Vmy name to this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
