Be it known that I, ANDREW ALRrGHT, Jr., a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Maplewood, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lat-.her Brushes, of which the following is a speciiication.

The invention pertains to lather brushes intended yfor shaving purposes, and consist-s in the novel two-part brush hereinafter described and claimed, said parts being separable and one comprising a bunch of bristles having on its knot end a permanently secured metal cap bearing a screw thread, and the other part consisting of a handle having permanently secured within its lower end a threaded cap adapted to be engaged with the metal cap on the bunch for the purpose of detachably securing ther two parts together.

One purpose of the invent-ion is to provide 'a lather brush whose bristles are held together by means adapting the bunch to be detachably connected with the handle, and also to be separated from the handle and sterilized in boiling water or by other process without injury to the bunch or the means applied to its knot end.

A further purposeof theinvention is to provide a durable brush composed of few parts capable of ready assembly and which, in the finished brush, constitute only two integral parts or members, one being the bunch of bristles with the cap permanently carried thereby, and the other being the handle having a concealed cap adapted to be interlocked with the cap on the bunch. One ot the main purposes, however, of the present invention is to provide a brush structure in which the bunch of bristles or the like may be at any time subjected to a sterilizing process without injury to the part or parts connected with the bunch,

The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a Side elevation of a lather brush constructed in accordance with and embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the two parts of the brush separated from each other and ready either for assembling or for the sterilization of the bunch of bristles;

Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the several mechanical elements entering into the manufacture of the brush, these elements being shown separated from one another and ready for assembly in the construction of the brush shown in Figs.` 1 and 2, and

Fig. 4- is a side elevation, partly in section and partly broken away, on a larger scale, showing the several parts of the brush assembled for use.

In the drawings designates the handle and 11 the bunch of bristles. The handle 10 is a hollow metal handle of suit-able design flaring outwardly at its lower edges and within its lower end holding a threaded cap 12 which is formed of sheet metal and initially comprises a dome portion 13 and an annular flange 14 extending outwardly from the lower edge of said dome portion, which is formed with a thread 15. The shell for the handle 10 is initially formed at its open end with a shoulder 16 and a downwardly depending annular flange 17. In the assembly of the cap 12 with the handle 10, said cap is inserted rintothe open end of the handle-shell until the flange 14 on the cap reaches the shoulder 1G of the handle, and thereupon the flange 1T is formed inwardly below the flange 14 of the cap so as to securely bind the cap within the handle, in the manner shown in Fig. 4, the annular upper edges of 1the cap engaging the inwardly contracted portion of the handle, as at 18, and the flange 14 of the cap being held within an annular groove 19 formed by the bending inwardly of the flange 17 of the handle below the flange 14 of the cap and binding ysaid flange against the shoulder 16 formed in the handle. The cap 12 completely iills the lower end of the handle 10 and is firmly secured in position without the necessity of soldering, rivets or other processes other than the merc bending inwardly below the flange 14 of the flange 17 formed ou the handle. The handle 10 carrying the cap 'l2 becomes substantially one integral piece, said cap 12 being permanently and immovably secured within the open end of the handle.

The bunch of bristles 11 is bound together at its knot end by vulcanized rubber or other suitable material, and the knot 2O of the bunch of bristles is closely encompassed llO by a metal securing band 21 which adds permanency tol the knot and the: sides of which band: converge downwardly and inwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, to engage the bristles on a line just below the knot. I utilize the band 21 not only as ine-ans for adding durability to. the knot of the bunch but to receive a sheet metal cap 22 whose initial form is shown in Fig. 3 and which has a dome 24 formed in its side with a threaded section 25- and below said section with a downwardly depending annular flange or skirt portion 2G. or skirt portion 26 ofP said cap is inserted downwardly upon the band 21 of the bunch until the upper outer edges of said band become arrested by an annular shoulder 27 formed on the cap at the base of' the threaded section 25 thereof, said section 25 being offset inwardlly from the vertical planeof the sides of the ange or skirt portion 26 so as to create said stopshoulder 27. After the cap 22 has beenV applied upon the band 21 of the bunch 11, the lower edge oit the fiange or skirt portion 26 of said cap is turned? inwardly below the lower edge of' the band 21, as. shown in Fig. 1l, to tightly hold said band in engagement with the aforesaid annular shoulder 27, and to tightly bindin a permanent manner the cap 22 upon hen the cap 22 has been secured on the bunch 11, said cap and bunch become in effect one integral` brush-part, the band 21 not being removable from the knot of the bristles and the cap 22 not being removable from the band 21. The brush units thus consist of the handle carrying the cap 12 and the bunchof bristles carrying the cap 22, and these two units may be assembled byv simply screwing the cap 22 into the cap 12 whereby the handle and bunch become connected for use in shaving purposes.

The bunch having the metal band 21 preserving its knot end and the metal cap 22 rigidly connected therewith maybe readily detachedfrom the handle- 10 for any' purpose whatever, and especially when it may be desired to subject the bunch' of bristles to boiling water or other means for the sterilization of the same. rlhe handle 10 is preferably formed of sheet metal, as shown, andV it may be readily cleaned at any time.

What I claim as my invention and desire `to secure by Letters-Patent, is: w

1.. A lather brush comprising a handle having a threaded cap secured within its lower end, and a bunch of bristles or the like having a metal band tightly encompassing its knot end and a metal cap mounted over the knot and rigidly secured to said band, said metal cap having a threaded dome section adapted t0 screw into said handle cap, an annular outwardly extending flange at the base of' said dome section forming a shoulder against which the upper edges of said band abut and a depending flange or skirt portion enclosing said band and formed inwardly to engage the lower edge thereot, thereby rigidly securing the cap in position on the knot end of the bunch.

A lather brush comprising a unit handle part and a unit brush part to be det'achablyv secured together, said handle part having an outwardly fiaring lower end` an annular flange thercat and an annular slioulder above said flange, and a metal cap having a threaded dome portion entered within the lower end of said handle and a laterally extending annular flange which sets against said shoulder, said annular flange on the handle being below and binding against said lateral flange and binding the cap firmly in position within the handle, and said brush]4 part having a metal band tightly encompassing its knot end and a metal cap mounted. `over the knot and rigidly secured to said band, said metal cap having a. threaded dome section adapted to screw into said handle cap, an annular outwardly extending fiangel at the base of said dome section forming a. shoulder against which the upper edgesv of said band abut and' a depending flange or skirt portion enclosing said band and formed inwardly 'to engage the lower edge thereof, thereby rigidly securing the cap in position on the knot end of the bunch.
