Be it known that I, VANDALIA SLATER, S12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hunt, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to currycombs of the self-cleaning type.

The object of the invention is to provide a currycoinb of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production, and which will automatically clean itself or free from its teeth the hair and scurf scraped from the animal, which may be set so as to expose the teeth and hold them exposed, whereby the groom may use the comb as he would an ordinary comb, and which is particularly adapted for currying delicate, tender, or sore places upon the animals body or limbs.

With this and other minor objects in view the invention consists in certain novel featu res of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved currycomb. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when the comb is in use, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.

Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the back of the comb, which may have, if desired, a metallic covering 2, and which is provided with an ordinary handle 3. Projecting outwardly from the face of the back-piece are comb-teeth 4, and formed preferably centrally of the back-piece is a socket 5, in which is seated one end of a coil-spring 6.

7 denotes the vibrating cleaner, which consists, preferably,ofa perforated disk 8, having a marginal inward ly-proj ecting flange 9,which is formed with longitudinal slots 10, preferably bayonet shape, to engage the studs 11, projecting from the edge of the back-piece. The perforations of the disk register with the teeth of the back and permit the latter to protrude therethrough and are of a sufficient size to allow of a slight rotary movement of the disk with respect to the back-piece.

In currying animals by exerting a sufficient pressure to overcome the action of the spring the teeth are forced through the perforations in the disk and permitted to come in contact with the body of the animal, which may now be curried in the usual manner. When pressure is removed and the spring permitted to act, the cleaner-disk will be forced outwardly, thus cleaning the teeth of any hair that may adhere thereto and render it unnecessary to hammer or knock the brush against some fixed part of the structure, as is now the custom,in order to remove the hair from the teeth.

In currying around any tender or sore part of the animal the pressure required to force the teeth through the cleaner-disk might cause the teeth to injure, or at least hurt, the animal, and to overcome this objection I force the cleaner-disk inward, so as to expose the teeth, and then give the disk a partial turn, thus locking the pins in the back of the brush in the upper branches of the bayonet-slot. In this position the pressure of the comb against the animals body may be regulated so as not to injure the animal.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.

The device is exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it is designed and may be placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor dei ails of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be socured by Letters Patent, is-

1. Acurrycombcomprisingaback provided with teeth, a cleaner connected to said back and provided with perforations through which the teeth are adapted to project, and an inclosed spring or its equivalent confined between the back and cleaner-plate to normally hold the latter in position to shield the teeth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A currycomb comprising a back provided with teeth and with a socket, a cleaner-plate cleaner-plate in position to shield the teeth, and means for locking it in position against the" action of the spring to expose the teeth, substantially as set forth.
