To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GRANT S. MILLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Washington and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in curry combs, and particularly to that class of curry combs which are generally designated as rotatable.

An object of this invention is the provision of a curry comb which includes a rotatable curryinghead, means being provided to hold the head stationary when the curry comb is in use, means also being provided to automatically clean the head when the same is rotated.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of means whereby the rotatable head may be disinfected as the same is rotated.

With these and other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a curry comb embodying the improvements of my invention; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with the handle partly broken away; and Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views on the lines 33 and 4-4 respectively of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a hollow cylindrical head, having concave end walls 2 which are adapted to close the ends of the head. The head is provided with a series of annular corrugations 3 whereby ribs 4 are formed between the corrugations, each of the ribs having an annular series of punched out openings 5 formed therein, the edges defining the openings being roughened whereby the coat of the animal will be thoroughly cleaned as the periphery of the head is moved over the same.

To provide a support for the head, a handle 6 is formed from a rod bent intermediate of its ends to provide a pair of legs, the legs adjacent their forward ends being bent outwardly as at 7 and being thence bent forwardly as at 8 in spaced parallel relation, the extremities of the legs being turned inwardly as at 9 to provide hearings or trunnions. which extend through openings in the end walls 2 of the head, so that the head is rotatably supported upon the handle. The handle 6 is formed of resilient metal, and the legs of the handle converge toward each other from the rear end of the handle to the outwardly extending portions 7 thereof, whereby the distance between the forwardly extending portions 8 of the handle is normally less than the length of the head 2, so that when the bearings 9 are disposed through the openings in the end walls of the head, the forwardly extending portions 8. of the handle frictionally engage the edges of the end walls 2 to provide means whereby the head may be held against rotation with relation to the handle. A series of radially extending grooves 10 are formed in each end wall 2 adjacent its mar inal edge, the forwardly extending portions 8 of the handle being adapted to spring into one of the grooves 10 in each end wall whereby the head is held against rotation owing to the tension of the spring metal from which the handle is formed.

It will be seen from the drawing, that the outwardly extending portions 7 of the handle are arranged in substantially the same longitudinal plane, and are spaced from the periphery of the head 1, so that the outwardly extending portions may form a support for a combined cleaning member and disinfectant holder 11. The cleaning member and holder is formed from an elongated sheet of transversely corrugated metal, the side edges of-which are bent forwardly as at 12 to form sidewalls, the plate between the forwardly turned side walls being provided with a longitudinal concavity 13 whereby a seat is provided for engagement against the outwardly turned portions 7 of the handle. The side edges of said member 12 are cut away between the corrugations to provide substantially V-shaped transversely curved cleaning teeth 14, the extremities of which engage in the corrugations 3 in the head on opposite sides of the handle, whereby the cleaning member 11 is held in position between the head and the outwardly turned portions 7 of the handle. The cleaner member 11 is adapted to contain a sponge or cloth 15 therein which is saturated with any desired disinfectant, whereby any disease germs from one animal will be killed before the curry comb is used on another animal, so that spread of disease is prevented.

In assembling my improved curry comb, the cleaner member 11 is first engaged against the outwardly turned portions 7 of the handle by spreading the legs of the handle, so that the cleaning member which is of substantially the same length as the distance between the forwardly extending portions 8 of the handle may be engaged therebetween. The sponge or cloth 15' which is isaturated with disinfectant is then placed within the cleaning member, and the inturned end 9 of one of the legs is then placed through the opening in one end wall of the head, the remaining leg being thence spread -1 outwardly so that the inturned extremity 9 riphery of the head is placed against the animal so that the curry comb may be used in the ordinary manner. When one animal has been combed, the head is manually rotatedin either direction, so that the clean- "I ing teeth let on one of the side walls 12 of the cleaning member will remove all hair and dirt from the grooves or corrugations formed in the head. By forming the teeth 14 V-shaped, the side edges of the teeth engage against the side walls of the ribs 4 formed by the corrugations in the head so that the head is thoroughly cleaned upon one rotation thereof. It will be seen that when the head is rotated, the fumes of the disinfectant on the sponge 15 will kill any disease germs which may have been taken off of the animal which has just been combed, so that disease will not be transmitted from one animal to another when the curry comb is used on several animals.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A curry comb comprising a handle having a combing head rotatably mounted thereon, and a disinfectant holder carried by the handle and adapted to inclose a portion of said head.

2. A curry comb comprising a handle having a head rotatably supported thereon, said head having a plurality of annular grooves formed therein, a cleaning member supported by the handle, and said member having a plurality of teeth formed thereon for engagement within the grooves in the head.

3. A device of the character described comprising a handle having a rotatable 1101- low cylindrical head mounted thereon, said head having a plurality of annular corrugations formed therein, the portions of the head between the corrugations being formed with an annular series of openings therein, and means for normally preventing rotation ofthe head with relation to the handle.

4. A curry comb comprising a handle having a rotatable cylindrical head mounted thereon, the periphery of said head having a plurality of annular grooves formed therein, a cleaning member substantially U- shaped in cross section carried by the handle, the side walls of said cleaning member at their edges having portions cut away to provide V-shaped teeth for engagement in the corrugations in the head, and said cleaning member being adapted to support a disinfectant saturated sponge therein.
