c. H. BULL PROTECTOR COVERING FOR LOOSE LEAF ACCOUNT AND L IKE BOOKS Filed Aug. 8, 1922 Patented Nov. 6, 1923.
inane PROTECTOR COVERING FOR LOOSE-LEAF ACCOUNT AND LIKE LOOKS.
Application filed August 8, 1922. Serial No. 580,385.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES HENRY BULL, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Gisborne, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented a new and useful Improved Protector Covering for Loose- Leaf Account and like Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the protector covers of account books: of all classes and particularly of the loose leaf-class in which the book covers require protection against wear by reason of the lengthy periods over which their use is extended. The invention has been devised with the object of providing a protector cover having means embodied therein by which it may be readily adjusted to, the varying thicknesses that a loose leaf account book assumes, as leaves are added to or removed from the binder covers of such a book.
The protector is formed by two members of approved iglaterial, as stiff canvas or the like, each made of envelope form adapted to slip over the respective covers of the book from the outer edges thereof, and made with flap extensions beyond their inner edges adapted to pass around the back of the book, combined with a metallic buckle device of a construction such as to fasten the extensions together in a. manner to permit of the total length of the extensions between the two cover members being varied at will.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an inside view of the protector. spread out straight.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a side sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale, through the connecting portions of the two members.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of a book showing the protector in position thereon.
Figure 5 is a plan of the metallic buckle device for fastening the two protector members together. 7
The protector is made of stiff canvas or like material out and shaped to form two pockets or envelopes A-A' of the required area to fit on to the book covers to be protected, and to form flap extensions from the outer sides projecting along their inner edges. This extension a on the member A is made of short length, while the extension a on the member A is made of the necessary length to provide for the requisite variations in the thickness capacity of the protector.
The metallic buckle device used with these protector members is formed in the manner shewn in Figure 5, of three longitudinal parallel bars B. C and D fixed at their ends to cross pieces E and F so as thereby to form slots between the centre bar 0 and the outer bars B and D on the respective sides thereof. These slots are made of lengths corresponding to the width of the flaps a and a of the protector members. i
i In use, this buckle is made as a permanent I attachment to the protector member A, by passing the end of the flap a round the outer bar B of the device and then sewing or otherwise fastening the flap. The other protector member A is then connected to the buckle by passing its flap end a in through the slot through which the flap a is. passed. and doubling it in round the central bar C and then out through the slot on the other side of such bar and beneath the other outer bar D, its extremity finally passing into the inside of the envelope opening ofsuch mem her A. It will be seen therefore that the length between the inner edges of the two members A and A formed by their flaps a and a thus connected and extending end to end, may be varied at will by drawing the flap a more or less through the buckle de vlce.
The protector thus made is placed on the book to be covered by slipping the envelope members A and A over the outer edges of the respective book covers when the flaps will extend round the back of the book, be ing regulated in their length in the manner described to suit the thickness of the book on which the protector is placed.
The buckle fastening device will prefer ably be made so that it is given a slight vbend in its transverse width; as shewn in the drawings, in order that the bar to which the flap a is secured will occupy a plane slightly below that of the other outer bar.
By this construction a. more uniform surface on the outside of the two flaps a and a is obtained.
I claim A protector covering for books formed by two members made of canvas or like material and of envelope form adapted to slip over the respective covers of the book and with flap extensions beyond their inner edges and a buckle fastening for securing the said flaps together made with a central and two side parallel bars, enclosing slots between them, to one of which side bars one of the flaps is permanently attached, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES HENRY BULL.
