Description
Sept. 25 1.923.' figg A. J. FREEDENBERG ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER Filed Oct. 22 1921 ,mf eintrge ABRAHAET J. FREEEENBERG, OF NEW' YGR'K, N, Y.
ABDOIJINAL SUPEORTER.
Application 1ed`0ctober22, 1921.k Serial No. 5GS,513,
useful In'iprovements in VAbdominal Sup-V porters, of Vwhich the following` is a full, clear, and exact specilication.
This invention relates to abdominal supporters and has for its object to provide an.
improved device ot this kind which' will fit and retain its position better than p 1ior constructions. t
The invention contemplates the provision oit a rigid Shield to lit the abdomen oit the wearer, and a supporting` belt attached to shield in such a wa7 as to insure tho holding thereof' in correct position regardless' et different movements ot the body, thereby insuring' comfort to the wearer and eliminating the inconvenience caused by constant shitting ot prior forms et supporters. Other objects will appear the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the aceoinininying drawings which constitute part of this speciiication, and then more specifically deiined'in the claims at the end ot thedescription.
in the accompanying' drawings wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: l
TEipgure lis aperspective view ot a supporter made substantially in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a side view oit the supporter showing, its position when in use, and
1Eigure- 3 is a central vertical section through the shield. I
The shield l is preferably made of light but rigid Inet-al covered on the inside with a leather lining 2. Said shield has an upper channeled portion 3 to tit the Jfront et the ab.- donien and a Alower channeled portion 4i arranged at. an inwardly extending' angle to he upper portion for fitting;- and supporting the lower part ofthe abdomen. As clearly shown 1n Figures 2 and 3, said upper and lower portions 3 and i ot the shield torni a pocket which may be varied in ycontour to tit the abdomen ot the wearer. Tie
edge of the lower portion 4t isY rein-forced wth a wire bead 5 for retaining it in correet position, said beadr extending upward slightly beyond the juncture between Vthe lower portion and upper portion 3 et the shield, as indicated at 7 in `Figure 2.
The shield is pre'fe'rabl;T made from a casting taken of the parts it is intended to t so that when, applied there wiil be little diilieulty in retaining it in position.v rhe bead 5 prevents the inwardlyT extending lower portion i of the shield 'from Vsagging or warping out of correct position.
The shield l is held in place by a flexiblebelt Shaving diverging straps 9 and l() at its extremities. The upper strap 9 is passed through ainetal loopll secured to the upper port-ion 3 et the shield l, while the lower strap l0 extends below a metal hook l2 on the vlower portion i of said shield, so that when the straps are secured as shown .in Fig- AureQ, the upper one has al tendency to retaink the shield Vagainst upward nioven'icnt, whilethe lower strap holds the inwardlj,7
bent lower portion of the shield in Contact with the lower part 'of the abdomen and prevents downward movement ot said shield.`
Experiment has shown that when the shield .is made as herein shown and described and it 1s secured inplace b v the'arranpement ot straps illustrated, the wearer may twist and turn hisbody without danger ot,displacingthe supporter.
I claim:`
An abdominal shield `and supporter coniprising a rigid plate formed to accurately litthe contour ot the wearers abdomen, saidv plate havingr an upper shield portion, and
a lower portion to extend under the abdomen tor supporting the same as on a means for securing the plate in position on Ythe wearer including a vdownwardlyv pointing' hook on said lower shelf-like portion ot the plate, and a strap extending from above y and engaging said hook.
In testimony whereotl have signed my name to this specication.
