UNITED STATES ALBERT DORSEY, F MARTIN'S FERRY, OHIO.
ATTACHING DEVICE FOR MINERS LAMPS.
Application filed April 19, 1928. Serial No. 271,159.
This invention relates broadly to attaching devices for miners lamps, and it has for its primary object to provide a simple and convenient form of attachment whereby a lamp may be removably mounted upon a miners cap.
A further object is to provide, in association with a miners cap having a lamp support mounted thereon, of an improved form of attachment whereby a. lamp may be rigidly mounted in place on said support.
A still further object is to provide, in a device of the character described, emergency means whereby the lamp may be remounted in place in the event that the supporting hook should be broken off.
Other important objects will hereinafter be made apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which *igure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, illustrating its application;
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the cap-carried support;
Figure 3 is a partial top plan view of the lamp;
Figure 4 is a rear elevation of the same;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of an emergency hook;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary detail view, showing said emergency hook applied to the cap-carried support; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the lamp illustrating the application thereof to a button of the users wearing apparel.
Referring to said drawings, 1 designates a miners lamp which, in general, may be of any usual or preferred type embodying a carbide container or generator 2 and a water container 3, the latter being ordinarily of horizontally-disposed cylinder form and carrying a reflector 4 on its front end.
In the present embodiment, the rear end of the water container 3 has rigidly mounted thereon the opposite ends of a horizontally disposed metal strap 5 which is bent intermediate its ends to form a flat-faced loop 6 designed for a purpose which will hereinafter be made apparent.
The usual miners cap 7 has rigidly attached to the front end portion of the top of its crown 7 a horizontally disposed end member 8 of a sheet metal support 8 which stands vertically in front of said crown and has its lower end 8" suitably attached, as to the usual visor 7 of the cap.
Rigidly mounted upon and closely overlying the angle between the upright body and the upper end member 8 of the support 8 is an angular plate 9 of resilient sheet metal which carries upon its front face an integral upwardly directed hook 10 of tongue-like form. Said tongue 10, which is bent upwardly from the lower edge of said plate 9, lies substantially parallel to the ad jacent face of said plate and has its upper end inclined into juxtaposition to said face so that it will retain against chance disengagement the loop 6 of the strap 5 following insertion of said loop to seating position relative to said tongue.
rovided in the horizontal end member 8 adjacent to the angle formed between said member and the upright body of the support 8 is a transverse slot 11 which registers with a similar slot 12 provided in the overlying portion of the plate 9. Said slots are adapted for receiving therein the downwardly directed bill l3 of an emergency hook 13 designed to be employed as a lamp support in case the tongue 10 should become broken off, said hook 13 having an upwardly directed tongue 13 similar to said tongue 10, which occupies the same re lationship to the adjacent face of the body of the hook 13 as does the tongue 10 to the upright body portion of the plate 9. Also provided in the support 8 and plate 9 at opposite sides of and midway between the ends of'the slots 11 and 12 are recesses 14 which complementally provide, in effect, a vertical bore'wherein may be received the vertical stem form of lamp supporting member which is carried by certain lamp structures heretofore employed.
Pivotally attached to the strap 5, preferably on opposite sides of the loop 6 are the ends of a wire bail 15 by means of which the lamp may be carried either by hand or attached to a button of the users wearing apparel, as to a button 16 carried either on the front of the jacket or on the bib 17 of the usual form of miners overalls. For facilitating such attachment to a button, the bail 15 has formed therein an end loop 15 of narrow width, substantially as shown. When not in use, the bail occupies a norhorizontally disposed loop-like member rigidly carried by the rear end of said water container, a plate rigidly carried by said vertical body member of the support, a tongue on said plate and extending upwardly substantially parallel to the latter, and a carrying bail pivotally mounted on said loop-like member.
2. Attaching means for miners lamps, comprising, in combination with a lamp embodying a water container and a cap having mounted thereon a sheet metal support which includes a vertical body member and a horizontal crown-overlying terminal, a horizontally disposed loop-like member rigidly carried by the rear end of said water container, a plate rigidly carried by said vertical body member of: the support, a tongue on said plate extending upwardly substantially parallel to the latter, and a wire bail-like member pivotally mounted on said loop and having a free end formed with a constricted loop.
3. A lamp attachment for caps including a support secured to the cap and having a top part engaged with the crown of the cap and having a part depending from said top part, a horizontal loop secured to the lamp, an angular plate secured to said top and depending parts of the support, an upwardly extending tongue carried by the plate and formed to engage within the loop, said tongue being formed integral with the bottom edge of the plate and extending upwardly therefrom, the upper end of the tongue being offset inwardly to lie close to the bottom part of the angular plate.
l. A lamp attachment for caps including a support secured to the cap and having a top part engaged with the crown of the cap and having a part depending from said top part, a horizontal loop secured to the lamp, an angular plate secured to said top and depending parts of the support, and an upwardly extending tongue formed integral with the angular plate and formed to engage within the loop.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
ALBERT DORSEY.
