nrmss SHIELD.
Application filed January 5, 1928. Serial No. 244,706.
This invention relates to dress shields and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising a moisture I proof body adapted to properly extend around the arm of a wearer together with a pad disposed over the faces of the body, said pad being readily removable with respect to the body to permit the same to be laundered when desired or readily replaced as the oc- 1O casions of practice may prefer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shield of this kind comprising a moisture-proof body and a removable member or pad adapted to overlie one of the faces of the body together with means for effectively maintaining the pad and body in assembled relation yet permitting removal of the pad when desired for laundering or other purposes.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved dress shield whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of a dress shield constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the shield herein disclosed opposite to that in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the pad as herein disclosed;
Figure 4 is an elevational view of the pad opposite to that illustrated in Fi ure 3;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a view in perspective of the shield as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved shield comprises a body B of moisture-proof material, such as rubberized cloth or the like, and which comprises the sections 1 united, as at 2, to form a curved ridge to properly extend around the arm of a wearer. This connection 2 is such to provide an outstanding seam having suitably sewed thereto a selvage strip 3. This seam provides means whereby the shield may be readily and conveniently attached to the gai mentwith which it is employed.
The outer or free marginal portions of the sections 1 of the body B also have secured thereto the selvage strips 4 and the outer portions of the sections 1 have secured thereto the crescent like strips 5 whereby the outer marginal portions of the sections 1 are, provided with pockets. The concave edge of each of the strips 5 also has secured thereto a selvage strip 6.
A pad P is adapted to be disposed over the pocketed faces of the members or sections 1 of the body B and this pad P also comprises two sections 7 secured one to the other to provide a curved ridge whereby the pad P is properly applied with respect to the body B. When the pad P is in its applied or working position the outer end portions of the sections 7 of the pad are received within the pockets provided by the strips 5 and held thereto by suitable fastening elements 8, preferably of a safety pin type. 80 To facilitate the application of the fastening elements 8 each of the strips 5 at its central portion, and preferably in relatively close proximity to its concave edge, is rovided with a pair of spaced and relative y small 35 openings 9, the edges of which being stitched or otherwise reinforced, as at 10. By this means the pad P is efiectively held in applied position with respect to the body B.
I find it of advantage, however, to provide additional means for holding the pad P in applied position and especially at the extremities of the ridge of the pad. For this purpose I provide in the selvage of the section 1 of the body B on a side to be placed adjacent the wearers body the spaced and relatively minute openings 11. Each pair of openings 11 is also positionedin relatively close proximity to an extremity of the ridge 2 of the body B. A safety pin or the like is adapted to be disposed through each pair of openings 11 and properly engaged with the applied pad P. It is believed to be obvious that the pad P as herein disclosed is effectively maintained in applied position, yet can be readily removed when desired for the purpose of laundering or replacement, thus assuring the shield in its entirety being maintained in a highly sanitary condition.
From the foregoing description it is 110 thought to be obvious that a dress shield constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With Whichit may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A dress shield comprising a pair of moisture proof bodies each having a concave edge, said edges being secured together and adapted to fit beneath an armpit, the lower edges of said bodies being of circular configuration, an appliedsubstantially crescent shaped body arranged against the outer face of each of said first mentioned bodies and secured along its convex edge to the curved edge of the supporting body, the ends of said crescent shaped bodies extending a substantial distance up the side edges of the body supporting them and further being free along their concave edges from the supporting bodies forming pockets therewith, and a pad comprising a pair of bodies each having a concave edge With said concave edges secured together, said pad bodies being designed to overlie said first bodies and to extend at their lower edges into an adjacent pocket, each of said crescent shaped bodies having a pair of apertures formed therethrough adjacent the transverse center of the shield to receive a securing elementdesigned to engage an adjacent under body portion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a-fiix my signature. r
KATIE H. NVILSON.
