UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MA'UDE SINOLAIR GEORGE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINED BUST CONFINER AND DRESS SHIELD.
Application filed March 28, 1923. Serial No. 628,218.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAUDE SINCLAIR GEORGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Comb-ined Bust Confiner and Dress Shield, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garments and more particularly to a horizontally closed brassire or bust-confiner lacking the usual garment openings or closures.
The garment is of the type to be put on over the head and shoulders of the wearer and is provided with means for contracting the body portion of the garment when'it is in proper position on the body of the wearer.
A further object is to provide a unitary garment structure comprising a shield and bust confiner with means for retaining the shield portion thereof in close and proper contact with the body of the wearer.
Further objects will be understood from the annexed specification and drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the garment on the body of the wearer.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the arm-pit dress shield portion of the garment.
Fig. 3 is a side and rear view of the garment.
The brassire or bust conliner A comprises a front portion 2, side portions 3 and a and. a back portion 5. It will be particularly noted that the body portion o-f said garment is co-ntinuous and closed in a horizontal direction and lacks either a` front, back o-r side vertical body openings and their closure means. The front position 2 has an upper* edge 6 positioned immediately above the busts of the wearer and a lower edge 7 positioned about the wearers waist-line. The sides 3 and t of the garment underneath the arms of the wearer are provided at their upper portions with a U-shaped cut-out portion for a purpose hereinafter set forth. The back portion 5 has a lower edge 8 positioned about the wearers waist-line and an upper edge 9 which upper edge is lower than the front upper edge 6 providing a back portion of less width than the front portion of the garment.
The garment on each side is provided with arm-pit-shields B. Each shield comprises an inner flap section 11 and an outer flap section 12. Each inner flap section 11 comprises preferably a double ply material having a curved upper edge adapted to lit the armpits of the wearer and a rounded lower edge adapted to conform to the U-shaped cut out portion and be positioned therein. Each outer flap section 12 comprises preferably a double ply material having a curved upper edge adapted to fit the armpits of the wearer and a rounded lower edge.
The curved upper edgej of the inner flap section is secured or fastened to the upper curved edge of its corresponding outer flap section as by stitching 13, the fastening means not only connects the sections to each other to make a unitary arm-pit shield but forms a pronounced fold or crease line. Each armpit-shield is provided with a shoulder strap 14, (preferably elastic,) having one end secured to the front of said armpitshield as at 15 and the other end secured to the back of said armpit-shield as at 16. It will be noted that the points of connection of the shoulder straps are at and in a line with the fold or crease line. Each outer flap section is provided with arm straps 17 (preferably elastic) which keep said outer sections in contact with the arm of the wearer. The lower curved edge of the inner flap sections are fastened (preferably stitched) to the edge of the U-shaped cut out portions as at 18 and preferably on the inner face of the garment. y
Extending completely around the lower edge of the garment and preferably on the outer face thereof is an elastic tape 19 secured thereto in any well known manner which allows the -elastic tape to expand and contract. Extending across the upper edge of the front of the garment and preferably on the outer face thereof is an elastic tape or web 20 having two ends. One end is secured to one inner flap section on the outer face thereof as at 21 and the other end secured to the other inner flap section in like manner as at 22. Extending across the upper edge of the back section in the same manner as the elastic web 20 is an elastic web or tape 23 having two ends. These ends are secured to the inner flap sections as at 24 and 25 in the same manner as the ends of the tape 2O only that they are connected to the rear edges while the ends of the tape 2O are secured to the front edges thereof.
The material of which the body of the garment is made is shirred or gathered in a vertical direction horizontally of the garment allowing it to expand and contract with the elastic tapes when the garment is on the wearer7 being taken oi or being put on.
t will be particularly noted that neither the front, side nor back upper edge of the garment comes np su'liiciently high on the body as to be in alignment with the armpits ot the wearer but on the contrary they are positioned a substantial distance below the same. However7 it will be noted that the fold or crease line oit each armpit shield is positioned a substantial distance above said upper edges and lit in and up next to the armpits ot the wearer.
Having thus described the invention in the 'forni in which it is at present devised7 what is claimed as new and upon which Letters Patent are prayed, is:
A unitary garment comprising a bust conliner having a continuous body encircling portion adapted to cover the front, sides and back or the wearers body below the arms; armpit shields positioned in the sides ot said encircling portion and lia-ving' vfolded arm-pit engaging portions extending above the upper part of the encircling portion; elastic gathering means extending around the liront, sides' and back ot said encircling portion at its lower part; an elastic gathering means extending across the upper part ot the iront ot said encircling portion and having ends connected to said arm-pit shields; and an elastic gathering means eX- tending across the upper part o' the back ot said encii'cliiig portion and having its ends connected to said arm-pit shields.
in testimony whereof l have hereunto set in v hand.
MAUfDE SINCLAIR GEORGE.
