Description

Patented Feb. 22, 1927.
UNITED STATES ABE A. HOFFMAN, on KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
COSTUME SLIP.
Application .filed January 11, 1926. SeriaINo. 80,516.
My invention relates to ladies garments, and more particularly to oneof that type commonly termed a costume slip, com prising a combination bodice and skirt adapted for wear beneath an outer garment.
Garments of this kind, being loose fitting,
are usually provided with shoulder straps and draw string for supporting the garment and for ornamentatiomor the straps are omitted and the garment supported by an elastic band at the upper edge of the garment and adapted to yieldingly grip the body of the wearer above the bust line. The latter form of garment is serviceable but, the garment being exposed above the bodice or at the yoke of a low cut gown, is unattractive in appearance because of the puckering of the band by the elastic material. Extension of the elastic band entirely around the body does not add to the comfort of the wearer and is unnecessary, one or more short strips of elastic properly placed, being sufficient to support the garment and hold it snugly in place while providingthe required expansion to permit the garment to be donned in the usual way.
It is the object, therefore, of the present invention, to provide a garment of the character described, which, whileas serviceable as those of the types mentioned, omits their unsightly and uncomfortable features.
In accomplishing this object I have provided the garment hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a costume slip embodying my improvements as it appears on the body of a wearer.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the upper portion of the slip, parts being broken away to illustrate attachment and 'postion of the elastic strips.
Fig. 3 is a View partly in section and partly in perspective of the upper edge portion of the garment at one of the sides thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:'-
1 designates a slip which, except as hereinafter noted, is of the usual construction, comprising a bust band 2 forming a pocket and shoulder straps 3.
' Located within the pocket, and concealed by the band 2, at the arm pit positions, are shortlengths of elastic strips 4:,th'e ends of which are securely attached to the band by stitching or other fastening means 5 to constitute them permanent parts of the garment, the strips being sufliciently short to lie within the arm pits of a wearer and be concealed by the wearers arms while the garment is being worn; but of sufficient length to permit the required expansion when being applied over larger portions of the body.
While the elastic strips are short, they are strong enough to support the garment, with or without the aid of the shoulder straps and, in any event, to draw the bust band snugly and evenly over the chest and back of the'wearer. The chest and back port-ions of the band, being plain, will not pucker as they would if the elastic extended entirely around the band, the puckering due to the draw in action of the elastic being limited to the elastic containing. portions concealed by the arms.
Consequently a garment embodying my improvements provides a sightly appearance,
with added comfort tothe wearer without sacrificing serviceability.
that I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In awgarmentof the character described, a pocket extending around the top thereof comprising a bust band, short strips of elastic within the band at the arm pit positions with their ends only attached to the pocket, the front and back portions of the band being free from elastic to lie flat against the body of a wearer when the band is drawn to the body by the elastic strips, and shoulder straps having the ends thereof attached to the band adjacent the ends of the elastic strips, so that said elastic strips 'lie beween the ends of the straps and under the arm pits of the wearer thereof and the flat portions of said band extend between said shoulder straps at the front and rear of said garment.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ABE A. HOFFMAN.
