A. B. TOPPAN ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES- Filed Nov. 15 1922 INVENTOR WWW ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 7, 1923 a I Ldddgi ALBERT BROOKINGSTOPPAN, OF WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES.
Application filed November l3, 1922. Serial No. 600,766.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. TorPAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new.
and useful Improvements in Attachments for Telephones, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for telephones and has for an object the provision of a cheap, simple and easily attached device for use upon the mouthpiece transmitter, whereby a fresh surface may be provided each time the telephone is used, to render the same sanitary. Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which in addition to its sanitary qualities, may be used as a memorandum and will afford a cheap and useful device for the purpose intended.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a portion of a telephone instrument with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
V Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the holder. H
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portion of a telephone instrument of the type in common use, which includes a hingedly mounted transmitter 12' from which extends a mouthpiece 13.
The invention which is designed for attachment to a mouthpiece comprises a pad 14, of any suitable shape and thickness and is preferably formed of a plurality of sheets of paper having openings therein, which openings register to provide a central opening 15 which extends transversely through the pad and is of a diameter approximately the same or slightly smaller than the diameter of the other end of the mouthpiece V 13. The invention further includes a holder by means of which the pad is detaehably secured to the mouthpiece and this holder is I preferably formed of a single length of spring wire and bent to provide oppositely extending curved gripping arms 16 which engage the outer periphery of the mouth piece 13 and from which extend spring arms 17 and 18-. The arms 17 are spaced apart and extend in opposite directions from one another and carry at their outer free ends hooks 19 which engage over one ed e of the pad 14. The arm 18 also carries at its outer free end a hook 20 for the same purpose, but this lastmentioned hook is arranged in looped formation, so that the arm 18 is double with the arms 16 extending therefrom.
In the use of the invention, person about to use the telephone will tear off one sheet of paper from the pad 14c, in accordance with directions which may be printed upon the sheet. This provides a fresh surface for the user, so that each person using the telephone is provided with such fresh surface. Due to the resilient-nature of the arms 17 and 18, as the pad is reduced in thickness by the removal of the sheets, the said pad will be at all times held in close contacting engagement with the outer edge of the mouthpiece.
In addition to its use as a sanitary article,
the invention may provide a convenient memorandum sheet, while if desired an advertisement may be printed thereon so that it will in addition provide a valuable advertising article.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is heref in reserved to makesuch changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
,I'Iaving described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a telephone transmitter of a plurality'of detachable sheets of material arranged in pad formation and provided with a central opening and a holder for detachably securing the pad in 7 position, said holder including substantially centrally arranged mouthpiece gripping arms, spring arms extending therefrom and means located at the outer ends of the spring arms for engagement with the pad.
In tGStlIIlOIlY whereof I affix my signature.
ALBERT BROOKINGS TOPPAN.
