PATENT OFFICE SANITARY PAD ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES 6 Claims.
This invention relates to a new and improved sanitary attachment for telephones and the like and, more particularly, to a germicidal cap or cover for the telephone mouthpiece.
One object of the invention is the provision of such a device which may be carried on the person and attached to each telephone mouthpiece utilized by the owner to prevent the transfer of germs from the mouthpiece to his person and from his mouth to the telephone.
Another object of the invention is to construct the device in such manner that the layer thereof proximate the users mouth may be disposed of following each utilization thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for facilitating the removal of each layer thereof, such means being so constructed that the occurrence of slightly residues of removed layers does not interfere with the removal of further layers.
A further object of the invention is to construct said device in such an economical manner that the same may be disposed of after a predetermined number of said layers have been. removed.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference'will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device of the invention as mounted on a telephone mouthpiece which is shown diagrammatically.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View similar to Fig. l but illustrates one of said layers in the act of being removed.

Referring now to the drawings wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, the reference numeral I 9 indicates a circular base of stiff paper or cardboard and having an upturned peripheral edge H which has its edge remote from the base [9 an inwardly directed annular flange i 2, see Fig. 5.

In order that sound may pass through the base Iii without difficulty, a plurality of holes 16 are grouped about the center thereof.
Located in the base between the upturned edges ii is a quantity of absorbent material I! such as coated or saturated with a germicidal solution. Thus the transfer of germs through the holes 15 is prevented. The absorbent material I? is anchored in position by having its peripheral edges engaged between the the flange I2, see Fig. 5.
Mounted atop the flange I2 is the lowermost sheet I 3 of a pad which includes a plurality of sheets each having the same outline as the base It except for a tab 28 extending radially from the edge of the sheet. The tabs 26 are located in diametral opposition to the tab I 3 of base H] which was stated to be at one end of the base axis located 90 from the axis on which the other two tabs are located. A binding 2| is provided for the sheets 18, said binding being secured to 180 of the periphery of each sheet and having its edge portion cemented to theouter face of theupturned edge I i of base Hi. The 180 of the periphcry of each sheet is bound by the binding 2| is diametrally opposed to the tab 20 of the sheet, and the ends of said binding therefore are located at the centers of the radially aligned base tabs. Suitable cutouts 22 are provided in binding 2| to pass the tabs it.
To facilitate the transmission of sound, the sheets l8 are provided with a plurality of aligned holes 23 grouped about the centers thereof. It is desired that the topmost sheet l8 be readily removable after each use of the device and to this end each sheet is provided with an arcuate score line 2 1 which extends through 180 and is concentric with and adjacent to the edge of the sheet secured to binding 25. At either end each score line 24 extends to the edge of its sheet 18 adjacent the end of binding 2|. As best shown in Fig. 5 the score line 24 of each sheet is located slightly radially inward of the score line of the next higher sheet. Thus, as each sheet is removed .the next lower sheet becomes ready for quick removal even though slight bits of the edge of the preceding sheet were left in place.
The invention contemplates that the described device will be carried in the users pocket and secured on each phone utilized, by means of the tabs It. After each use of the device, the topmost sheet i8 is removed by grasping the tab 20 and pulling the sheet [8 free along the score line 24. Thus, any germ matter lodged on the said sheet during the use thereof is disposed of. When all of the sheets it have been used the device may be discarded and another one procured, this action being greatly influenced by the inexpensive construction of the device. It is to be mentioned that the score line 25, or the lowermost sheet It may be located radially within the flange l2 and the portion of the sheet radially beyond the line cemented to the flange.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as de-' flned in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desirelto secure by United States Letters Patent is:
.1. A sanitary device for a telephone mouthpiece which comprises 'base detachably securable on the mouthpiece and having therein a plurality of centrally grouped holes for sound transmission, a quantity of absorbent material located in said base and having a germicidal solution applied thereto, a pad mounted atop said base and including a plurality of sheets, a binding securing theseveral sheets together throughout a portion of their perimeters, .a tab on each sheet for removing the latter, said tabs being disposed oppositely to the binding, a plurality of aligned centrally grouped holes in the sheets the transmission of sound, and a score line in each sheet adjacent the said binding to facilitate the removal of the sheet the score line in each sheet being spaced slightly further away from the binding than the next higher sheet.

A'sanitary device for a telephone mouthpiece, which comprises a circular base plate having a peripheral wall, an inturned annular flange on said wall, a plurality of centrally grouped holes in said base plate for the transmission of sound, a quantity of absorbent material treated with a germicidal solution and located within said wall, a circular pad mounted on said flange and including a plurality of sheets, a binding securing together the several sheets, said binding extending throughout 180 of the peripheries of the sheets and being secured also to said wall throughout the same angular distance, a tab on each sheet for purposes of removing the latter, said tabs being located diametrally opposite the centerof the binding, and means for detachably securing the base on a phone mouthpiece.

A sanitary device for a telephone mouthpiece, which comprises a circular baselplate having a peripheral wall, an inturned annular flange on said wall, a plurality of centrally grouped holes in said base plate for the transmission of sound, a quantity of absorbent material treated with a germicidal solution and located within' said wall, a circular pad mounted on said flange and including a plurality of sheets, a binding securing together the several sheets, said binding extending throughout 180 of the peripheries of the sheets and being secured also to'said'wall throughout the same angular distance, a tab on each sheet for purposes of removing the latter,
said tabs being located diametrally opposite the center of the binding, means for detachably securing the base on a phone, mouthpiece, and
4 means for facilitating the disengagement of each sheet from the binding.

A sanitary device for a telephone mouthpiece, which comprises a circular base plate having a peripheral wall, an inturned annular flange on said wall, a plurality of centrally grouped holes in said base plate for the transmission of sound, a quantity of absorbent material treated with a germicidal solution and located within said Wall a circular pad mounted on said flange and including a plurality of sheets, a binding securing together the several sheets, said bindin extending throughout of the peripheries of the sheets and being secured also to said wall throughout the same angular distance, a tab on each sheet for purposes or removing the latter, said tabs being located diametrally opposite the center of the binding, tabs formed by cutouts in said peripheral wall and said flange, one at either end of the said binding and one at the center of the latter, said latter tabs being extended radially from said base, and an adhesive pad on the under side of each of said latter tabs for securing the device on a telephone mouthpiece.

A sanitary device for a telephone mouthpiece, which comprises a circular base plate having a peripheral wall, an inturned annular flange on said wall, a plurality of centrally grouped holes in said base plate for the transmission of sound, a quantity of absorbent material treated with a germicidal solution and located within said wall, a circular pad mounted on said flange and including a plurality of sheets, a binding securing together the several sheets, said binding extending throughout 180 of the peripheries of the sheets and bein secured also to said wall throughout the same angular distance, a tab on each sheet for purposes of removing the latter, said tabs being located diametrally opposite the center of the binding, tabs formed by cutouts in said peripheral wall and said flange, one at either end of the said binding and one at the center of the latter, said latter tabs being extended radially from said base, an adhesive pad on the under side of each of said latter tabs for securing the same atop a telephone mouthpiece, and means for facilitating the disengagement of each sheet from the binding.
