Description

June 13, 1933. A BQEHLER 1,914,070
MUSIC SHEET TURNER Filed 001;. 2, 1929 M E Eg E I lNvENTOR F35 Hdez/a oelen; "k, BY t Q MTTORNEY Patented June 13, 1933 UNITED STATES ADOLPH BOEHLER, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK MUSIC SHEET TURNER y Application led October 2, 1929. Serial No. 396,615.
This invention relates to improvements in music sheet turners, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a muslc sheet turner adapted to be operated by the feet of a player, and which can be conveniently mounted on a note or music holder for stands as well as on pianos or the like for proper operation.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character for turning music sheets equipped with metal clips whereby a magnet is used to engage the respective clips at the proper moment and to be turned with the sheet to the opposite page of the book containing the music sheets and to be then automatically disengaged from the clip, and returned again by suitable means into its operating position.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character 1n which a foot operated lever rotates a rod t-o which the arm holding the magnet is attached whereby proper means are provided to ensure positive operation of the arm to turn the sheet to the opposite page, whereby the central operating post is so arranged towards one side of the central line of the book that the magnet will automatically be released from the clip.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a music sheet turner in which a foot lever and rod connected therewith is connected to a toothed segment in mesh with ar bevel gear on the rod operating the sheet turning arm.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a sheet music turner in which the sheet turning arm after each operation is returned, into its operative position by means of a spring.
These and other objects of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically deined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a' material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a music sheet turner constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the central operating post.
Fig. 3 is a section through the upper part of the post on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional top plan view on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the metal paper clips.
As illustrated, a post composed of the two telescoping parts and 11 has near the lower end of part 11 an opening 12 allowing the passage of a hook 13 adapted to' grip over the lower bar of a music sheet supporting frame or plate, and a wing nut 14 permits the securing of the hook in place.
The upper part or member 11 is longitudinally slotted, as at 15, and in this slot a hook 16 is displaceably arranged adapted to engage the upper bar of the sheet support and to be secured in place by the proper 0peration of a wing nut 17 The upper end of part 11 is slotted, as at 18, and equipped with acollar 19 having ears for the reception of a bolt carrying a wingnut 20 allowing a tightening of collar 19 about the lower end of part 10 in order to secure the same in any of its adjusted positions relative to member 11.
Above the upper edge of the book 21 containing the music sheets, the upper partl() of the central post carries a collar 22 having an arm laterally extending therefrom composed of the telescoping parts 23 and 24.
To the outer end of part 24 a depending arm 25 is secured by means of a Wingnut 26, the lower end of which carries a magnet 27 adapted to engage the front face of a paper clip 28, the rear face of which is insulated, while its inner` end is forked to grip over the edge of a sheet of music. f
Between the collars 29, 30, the upper part 10 of the central post carries a bevel gear 31, in mesh with a segment 32 having bevel teeth on its front face meshing with the teeth of the gear 31, and connected at its lower end to an arm 33, supported by a bolt 34, having a frontal head, whiler a pin 35, at its rear end prevents the displacement of the bolt. To the other end of segment 32, the upper end of an operating rod 36 is secured, the lower end is downwardly extended and equipped with a foot lever 37.
The collar 30 carries an angular finger 38 adapted to grip behind arm 23, While a spring 39 wound about pin or bolt 34 engages the segment as at 40 to return the same into its operative position after each turning of a sheet. c
The device operates as follows:
The device is first properly adjusted on a book containing the music sheets by suitably telescoping parts l0 and 11 and locking them in their relative positions with the hooks 16 and 13 gripping over the upper and lower bars of the sheet supporting frame at one side of the middle of the sheets, and the arms 23, 24 above the upper edge of the sheet music, and the magnet 27 in engagement with the metallic front face of clip Q8.
It now at the desired moment, the foot pedal 37 is depressed, the rod 36 will be drawn downwardly and operate segment 32 to turn about pin 34 and thus rotating bevel gear 3l and its collar 30 to which linger 38 is attached, so that arms 23, 24 the magnet and the uppermost sheet of paper, the clip of which is engaged by the magnet will participate in this turning movement, and turn the sheet to the opposite page. As the device is eccentrically arranged on the book, the magnet will be forced to release the clip and sheet, and spring 39 will automatically return the parts into their operating position upon the release of the foot lever.
It will be understood that I have described one form of my invention as an example only and that I may make such changes in its construction as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from the invention or the principles involved.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In ay music sheet turner of the class described, including` a foot operated arm composed of two telescoping parts, a depending arm pivot-ally attached to the outer end of said telescoping arm, a horse-shoe magnet depending from the lower end of said depending arm for engaging metal paper clips on the sheets to be turned upon engagement by said magnets upon the operation of said music sheet turner, and means to turn the telescoping arm, said means comprising a telescoping post, a gear on said post having a socket or collar, a segment operated by said foot pedal in mesh with said gear, and a finger on said collar engaging behind said telescoping arm.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ADOLF BOEHLER.
