To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMns A. WEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellwood, in the county of Butler and State of and useful ln'iprovements in Attachments for Paper- Stands, of which the following is a specification. i

This invention relates to an attachment for paper stands and more particularly to that type of stand upon which is supported a roll of wrapping paper and provided with a spring pressed tearing bar.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a device engageable with the tearing bar and having an arm so arranged that the finger on said arm is positioned beneath the tearing bar and the free end of the strip of paper on the roll to hold said free end in spaced relation with the rollto enable said free end to be readily grasped to unwind a portion ofthe strip from the roll and to tear the same by means of the tearing bar.

Another object of the" invention is to provide the device with an arm positioned beneath the tearing bar and curved in such a manner that when theroll is moved to cause the free end thereof to extendbelow the tearing bar,said arm will guide the free end of the roll away from the roll'and prevent said end from adhering to the roll,

7 thus enabling the same to be easily grasped between the thumb and forefinger to further unwind a portion of the'roll.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device with clamping aws and'means for securing the jaws to the tearing bar on the frame which will permit the device to be used upon stands having tearingbars of different sizes. I

A still further object of the invention is to provide one of the clamping-jaws on the device with a member for contact with the end of the roll, whereby the separating finger on the spacing arm may be spaced the required distance from the end of the roll to insure the free end of the roll being held by the spacing arm in spaced relation with the roll.

In the drawing,--Figure l is a front elevation of a paper stand showing the attachment connected to the spring pressed tearing bar on the stand with the free end of the roll positioned slightly below the tearing bar. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the tearing bar and aportion of the roll, and showing the free endof the roll held in spaced relation with the body of the roll by means of the spacing arm. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a portion of Fig. 1. Fig. A is a detail perspective view of the attachment removed from the'tearing bar. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the attachment removed from the tearing bar.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a paper stand which is of the usual construction and comprising spaced supports 2 held in spaced relation by a cross bar 3 and supporting between their ends for turning movement a roll holder 4: upon which is mounted a roll of wrapping paper 5. Secured to the cross piece 3 of the frame is the usual spring pressed tearing bar 6 which contacts with the peripheral edge of the roll at its free end throughout its entire width. As this construction is embodied in paper stands now in common use, further description of the same is'deemed unnecessary.

The attachment, which is designated in the drawing by the numeral 7, comprises a body 8 having arranged at one end thereof clamping

said slots and openings being adapted to register and receive fastening elements 16 by means of which the clamping jaws may be frictionally engaged with the opposite side of the tearing bar 6, while the elongated slots 15 allow vertical adjustment of one of the fastening elements 15, so that tearing bars varying in height may be accommodated between the clamping jaws.

The clamping jaw 10 has projecting laterally from one side thereof and between its ends a spacing member 17 bent between its ends, as at 18, to provide a stop shoulder 19 for contact with one end of a roll to insure the proper spacing from the end of the roll of the spacing arm 11 and separating finger 12. said spacing member overlying in spaced relation the body 8 of the attachment and with the stop shoulder 19 extending beyond and at right angles to the body 8. The separating finger 12 is provided with oppositely inclined sides 21 which converge at a point a short distance above the upper edge of the body 8, while the spacing arm 11 is curved outwardly and away from the body 8 throughout its entire length.

9 and 10 are loosened to enable one end of the tearing bar 6 to be positioned therebetween. The attachment is now passed along the bar until the stop shoulder 19 contacts with the end of the roll, and with the attachment in this position, the fastening elements are adjusted to frictionally clamp a portion of the tearing bar 6 between the clamping jaws. The roll holder is now rotated to cause the separating finger 12 to I pass between the free edge of the roll and the body thereof, and it will be noted with reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing that the stop shoulder 13 limits the distance that the separating finger 12 extends beneath the tearingbar 6, and also enables the body 8 to contact with the peripheral surface of the roll below the free edge for the entire length of the body, so that when the operator places his hand upon the rollto turn the same to cause the free edgeof the paper to pass below the bottom edge of the tearing bar, said free edge will be guided by the curved spacing arm and body 8 away from the roll and will be held in this position by the spacing arm to enable the person using the paper to grasp the free edge thereof between the thumb and forefinger, and by exerting a pull thereon cause the roll to rotate until sufficient paper has been withdrawn from beneath the tearing bar to accommodate the thereon and a spring pressed tearing bar, of

an attachment for said bar comprising a body, a downwardly extending spacing arm at one end of the body and curved outwardly therefrom throughout its length, a separating finger on said arm above the body adapted to extend beneath the tearing bar and the free edge of the paper roll, a clamping jaw formed integral with the other end of the body and extending above the same, a second clamping jaw, means for adjustably connecting said jaws with the tearing bar, and a spacing member formed integral with the last mentioned jaw and between the ends thereof.

2. The combination with a paper stand having a roll of paper mounted thereon and a spring pressed tearing bar, of an attachment for said bar comprising a body, a spacing arm at one end of the body curved throughout its length, a separating finger formed integral with said arm to extend above said body, an upwardly extending clamping jaw at the opposite end of the body, a second clamping jaw, fastening elements passing through said jaws and adapted to removably connect the same with the tearing bar, a spacing member formed integral with the last mentioned jaw, and a stop shoulder formed from said member and adapted to contact with the end of the roll of paper to space the separating finger and the spacing arm a predetermined distance from the end of said roll.

3. A device of the class described comprisinga body, a spacing arm at one end of the body and extending below the same, a separating finger formed integral with the spacing arm and extending above said body, spaced clamping jaws, one of which is formed integral with the body and each provided with an alined slot, and fastening elements passing through said jaws with one of said elements movable in said slots.
