UNITED STATES ATENT IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-MAILS.'

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,269, dated January 6, 1874; application filed December 10, 1873.

To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that I, J. O. NILns', of Scheneetady, in the coimty of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets for Hanging or Supporting Pictures, Mirrors, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to attach a hook, knob, or support to a Wall easily, and sufficiently firm for the hanging or supporting of pictures, mirrors, hats, garments, bookshelves, brackets, &c., and for the support of stove-pipes, lamps, o .r other articles at any desired point, without-scarcely marring or jarring the wall, and which can easily be entirely removed, when desired, for repaperin g or other purposes.

The nature of my invention consists in a hook, knob, or point of support attached to-or forming part of a wall-plate, which isperforated with small holes so arranged that, by driving small nails or brads through said holes into the Wall, the desired object will be accomplished, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art y to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a section through the line w I do not proposeto limit myself to the mere form or shape of the plate or support, as it is manifest it can be made in a variety of forms to suit the fancy, without in the least departing from the principle of my invention.

A represents a plate of metal or any other suitable material, and which may be ina-de in any of the forms shown, or in any other shape desired, and plain or ornamental, according to taste. B represents a knob, hook, or other support formed on or attached to the front of the plate A, at or below the center, whereby the plate is less liable to be drawn from-the wall by the picture or other weight supported. The plate A is pierced with a suitable number of small holes, a a,.into which Very small nails or brads are to be driven into the wall, so that the holes made in the wall by said nails or brads will be scarcely visible `on a papered wall at the height of the border. The holes a a are so arranged that some of the nails, at least, will necessarily enter one or more laths, for the purpose of holding the plate su'iciently iirm'for the purposes required. e

The plate thus attached can be easily pried oft' from the wall when desired-` The same device may be used on awall plastered onbrick, simply using short nailsior brads, which may be driven into the plaster and brick alittle way, and farther intoA the mortar between the bricks, and holding the: plate suiciently firm. y

I may provide the plate A with small spurs onthe inner and lower part and sides, so as to support the weight, and then only one small nail or brad would be required to keep it against i the wall.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y y The plate A, provided with knob B or its equivalent, and also with a number of small holes around its margin, by means of which said plate may be securely attached to the wall by a number of small and slender tacks or 11a-ils, and thus avoid the liability, common tol screws or a lesser number of large nails, of rupturing the plasterin g.
