Description

Wflmesses Nv PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPM-ER. WASHINGTON. a c
Patented Aug. 3,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PICTURE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,701, dated. August 3, 1880.
Application filed February 16, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. HAVILAND, of the cilyand county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Picture-Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
, My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of devices known as picture hooks or hangers, and' it consists in the combination, with a curved plate, hook, or hanger, of a roller or pulley, over which the supporting-cord passes, and which, by turning freely upon its axis, allows the picture to be adjusted to hang squarely.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of myinvent-ion, Figure l is a view of my book, showing its application. Fig. 2 is a modification.
In the said drawings, A is the hanger, which consists of a plate having its upper end bent into the form ofa broad hook, with corners auto preventit from turning when it rests upon the picture-strip. The opposite end, 0, ofthe plate is bent up into the form of a hook of considerable depth. Between the sides of this hook is fitted a grooved roller, 0, which turns freely upon a pin or axis, and is at the same time set deeply enough below the point of the hook to prevent cord from slipping out. This 0 plate may e hooked .upon the picture strip or rod at any point desired, and the picturecord being placed over the pulley, the picture may be made to hang squarely by a slight movement; but in many cases it will adjust itself by the freedom with which the cord will move, and it thus tends to keep in the proper position.
When picture strips or rods are not used the upper part of the plate will-be made flat and without any curve. A hole is made through it, and it is then secured to the wall by a nail or screw. The lower part will be formed to receive the pulley, as before described.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for hanging pictures, consisting of the independent strip A, adapted to be'supported by a strip or rod or secured to the wall, and having the lower end curved, as shown, to form a hook, in combination with the roller or pulley 0, over which the cord passes and is adjusted, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
