UNITED STATES FREDRICK WILLIAM MARHEINE, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
TOY.
Application filed October 3, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK- W'ILLIAM MARHEINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a toy, one of its objects being to provide a light, simple and durable device which can be pushed along the floor or walks and which has means for spinning a pin wheel or Whirligig at high speed so as to render the toy attractive to the child using it, the pin wheel being preferably colored so that when rotating it will produce a pleasing appearance.
Another object is to provide a toy which will not harm the child because of the absence of metal parts.
Another object is to provide a toy which can be made at low cost.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the lower portion thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view partly in elevation and partly in section of the spool of the pin wheel, showing adjacent parts.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates an elongated stick properly shaped at one end to providea handle or grip 2. A hearing pin 3 is extended laterally from the other end of the stick and journaled on this pin is a ground wheel 4: having an annular groove 5 in its periphery, the said wheel being spaced from the stick 1 by a washer 6.
A pin 7 is extended laterally from the Serial No. 504,858.
stick at a point between the ends thereof, this pin being inclined upwardly slightly and having a spool 8 mounted for rotation thereon. The spool is provided with a bore 9 extending thereinto from one end and with an annular groove 10, that end of the spool contacting with the stick 1 being preferab-ly rounded as shown at 11 so that friction will be reduced.
A pin wheel or Whirligig 12 preferably formed of celluloid is fastened to the outer end of the spool 8 and an endless cord belt 13 is mounted in the groove 5 of the wheel 4: and also in the groove 10.
Obviously when the toy is rolled along the floor motion will be transmitted from the wheel 4 tothe spool 8 and the pin wheel or Whirligig 12 will be rotated at a high speed. In view of the fact that the pin 7 is inclined as shown there will be no danger of the spool 8 slipping laterally off of the pin because of the high speed at which it is rotated. The
belt 13 serves to hold the spool 8 positively against movement off of the pin 7 because, in orderto leave said pin it would be necessary for the belt to stretch.
It will be noted that the structure can be made without the use of metal parts and by coloring the pin wheel the toy can be made especially attractive.
What is claimed is A toy comprising a stick, a bearing pin extending laterally therefrom and a ground wheel on the pin and having a peripheral groove, pin extending laterally from the stick and inclined slightly away from the ground wheel, a spool journaled thereon, a
pin Wheel rotatable with the spool, and an
